Chapter Officers October 2008 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLUMBING ENGINEERS A Nonprofit Organization ~ Local Chapters are not authorized to speak for the Society From the President: We had a great turnout for our first meeting of the year... We had 54 in attendance which is a new record for us. This also presented a bit of a problem for us. Although we are happy to have so many people interested in our programs, it can be a big problem with having enough food for everyone. We had 35 people rsvp, and of course19 that didn't. We had to send out for KFC next door for a few buckets of chicken to feed everyone. If you didn't make it to our September meeting, you missed a lively presentation on water treatment systems. I would like to thank Tim Zimmerman for organizing a great technical session for us all. I would also like to thank Aqua Systems, Disney McLane, and Frieji for participating in our first time debate style seminar. Not exactly a debate, but each presenter got 20 minutes to tell us about their system and answer questions from the audience. We won't be having any more of these style tech sessions this year, but Tim has a great line up for the rest of the year. As you all should know, we have our ASPE Convention and Exposition at the end of this month. We will be sending five delegates this year to Long Beach. We will be voting on 21 Bylaw amendments. One of these bylaws was submitted by our own Jim Shepherd. This bylaw provides some oversight of programs and foundations that Society contributes money to, such as the Research Foundation. Recently there has been some controversy over the lack of published results from the Research Foundation's studies that ASPE has contributed to. This situation seems to be rectified and we should begin to see results. Speaking of controversy, there is one bylaw that Stan Wolfson has submitted for voting on. This concerns the past dues rebates that are owed to each Chapter. ASPE Bylaw article 3.4 states At the end of each financial quarter the Secretary/Treasurer shall forward to each chapter 20% of all monies received from dues of members attached to that chapter. Stan s proposed bylaw basically states that all dues money currently owed to each Chapter by Society would be forgiven or wiped from the books. This proposal has your Central Indiana Board of Directors, and others very angry and disappointed with our Society. They have been actively soliciting for forgiveness of these dues for the past year or so. The fact that they held back the dues rebates to the Chapters was against our own bylaws, but for them to make a new bylaw to relieve them of the Continued on page 2 Page 1

2 From the President Continued. obligation to pay it back is just plain theft. This is so much like what we've been seeing in our corporate world with misappropriation of funds and corporate bailouts. The (then) Board also chose to borrow funds that were directed to the Research Foundation. These actions were taken in order to save (?) the Society from closing their doors. The Research Foundation however negotiated a payback plan with the Board and has been working on that these past few years. The Chapters have not been given the courtesy of their own payback plan. This amounts to nearly a half a million dollars. The Central Indiana Chapter is owed $9, Your Board has voted in the recent past to not forgive these dues rebates. We feel that each chapter should retain the right to make that decision for themselves without any interference from Society. We would like for our Society and its leaders to be fiscally responsible with our funds, and that is why we will be voting against the Society stealing your money. If you have any opinions about this, please write or your ASPE Board of Directors and let them know you are for or against this proposal. Please copy me on your correspondences if you would. 3 American Society of Plumbing Engineers A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION Central Indiana Chapter 5475 Cayman Court Carmel, IN Central Indiana ASPE Board Meeting September 5, 2008 Attendees: Gary Borgmann Tim Zimmerman Paul Vogt Dan Cummins Pete Dervenis Chris Beiswenger Meeting Called to Order at 11:45 a.m. Topics of Discussion: Old Business: September meeting topic consisting of the three various water treatment methods and the format of the meeting was discussed. Tim Zimmerman stated that he will monitor the 20 minute presentations and questions to reduce the negative debating like we see in the political campaigns today. Tim said that there was another affiliate interested in another debate style session on a different topic. Since all dates for this year have been booked, this topic will be considered for next year. New Business: Extensive and lengthy discussion was focused on the topic of Amendment #5 which will be voted upon at the ASPE Convention in October. Amendment #5 deals with the past dues forgiveness, where the ASPE Board is proposing an amendment that will basically make all past dues owed to chapters to be forgiven. Our local board members are standing strong against forgiving the past dues. We feel that headquarters need to own up to their responsibilities. The past dues belong to the chapters; furthermore, these need to be paid to the chapters. One comment was made that in personal finances - Visa is not going to just wipe off a $5000 credit card debt because someone calls them and asks Visa to forgive their debt. NO WAY!!! It was also mentioned that it seems that since the chapters are doing well and have funds in the bank that the society (headquarters) thinks we don t need the money that is due us. Our chapter, as well as others, have many events that we don t charge membership for. To mention a few: unsponsored lunch seminars, Baseball Night, Appreciation Dinners, Membership drives, Christmas Dinner, etc. Our chapter has also purchased things to make running our chapter easier like a laptop that is capable of making our flyers, storing local chapter information and bookkeeping. We have also purchased a website and keep it updated. All these things require funds. That is why we stand strongly against forgiving the debt that we did not create! If you would like your card to follow a different link than the one posted please let know so he can get that changed. Also you will notice that the newsletter advertising has moved around as well. We are trying to have opportunities to advertise on every page of the newsletter and most pages of the website. This will help the advertiser receive more viewing then placing them all at the end. Since our newsletters are all electronic now, we can move items wherever we want them to be moved to. There is a new advertising opportunity for all to use. For $25 per month you can advertise on the IndyASPE.org homepage. This ad space is sharable and you can choose to run your ad as long as you wish. To advertise here please send image and information to at info@indyaspe.org. This ad space gives you the most publicity and views from members, nonmembers and even individuals who stumble across our site. Hopefully everyone will be able to take the opportunity and use this new space for advertising. I hope that everyone is getting adapted to our website. 7 Tech News Now: Hello to all, hope everyone is well. In September we tried something a little different with our meeting; we had 3 different manufactures of water softeners/conditioners speaking along with their individual product line. I need feedback on whether you enjoyed this program or not, I would love to hear your personal pros and cons concerning the seminar. This will help me gauge wither we do it again or not. I would like to personally thank all the speakers once again Stephen Callahan of Watts, Bret Petty of Aqua Systems and William F. Freije, III of Freije. October s seminar topic will be on types of plumbing valves and their intended applications with the speaker being Tom Durkin with Durkin Villalta Partners Engineering. The lunch sponsor will be Scott Treeger with WMK & Associates. They will have a table top display with a few different types of valves on display. Please come early so you can browse their display. Speaker Bio: As Director of Engineering and Senior Partner of Durkin & Villalta Partners Engineering, Indianapolis, Tom Durkin is widely recognized as one of the most innovative and creative engineers in the country. He has won ten state and national design awards, including the Consulting Engineers of Indiana Grand Project Award twice.
