While it is a time to be with our families and a time to give thanks, let s keep those who may be still looking for work in our hearts and prayers. For those of you who will be traveling over the holiday, please be safe! The 2011 ASPE Technical Symposium was held October 27 30, 2011 in Orlando, Florida. There were a lot of great seminars available to attend. Although the weather was a bit cool (mid 60 s to low 70 s) it was a hellava lot warmer than it was here. The chapter was honored twice for Membership awards due to the tireless efforts of our Vice President Membership Extraordinaire Chad Dupler. Chad received the Membership Retention Award and the Membership Growth Award. A suitable awards ceremony, which will embarrass the hell out of him I hope, will be conducted Monday at the meeting. So plan on attending. The Chapter was also the recipient of the Chapter Award of Merit. This went to our past president Dave Dexter which was well deserved! This meant that the Central Ohio Chapter was one of only a handful of Chapters that won the Triple Crown so to speak! 3 VP Technical Tony Furst As most everyone has heard by now I have taken over as the V.P. Technical for the chapter. As I begin my time on the board I want to thank everyone for your understanding and patience as I get a handle on all of my responsibilities. Our guest speaker for the November meeting will be Mr. David Hammontree with Ohio Radiant Floors. He will be discussing Solar Water Heating and Heat Recovery. Given the tighter energy standards in place today finding new and innovative ways to decrease a building s energy consumption can sometimes be a challenge. Come to the meeting and learn how a solar water heating system can benefit your building owner. 5 VP Legislative Bill Deardurff Is everyone ready for the New OPC? It was required effective Nov.1, I had a great time at the Technical Symposium. I would encourage you to attend future Conventions and Symposiums. The product show on Thursday evening was great. It was probably about four to six times the size of our combined meeting in October (but nowhere near the size of the show at the Conventions). Then from Friday morning through Sunday noon, I attended 5 different classes for a total of 15 CEU s. Also, the V.P Legislatives from all over the country met. Among other things, we discussed and voted on proposed changes to the IPC. We also discussed how it is wrong for local inspectors to make specific demands, just based on a general paragraph near the beginning of a Code section or Connections to the potable water system. Connections to the potable water system shall conform to Sections through Nowhere in Chapter 6 is there a specific mention of requiring a backflow preventer at a water softener. Bill Deardurff Vice President Legislative For example, OPC is a general summary regarding protection of the water supply Devices, appurtenances, appliances and apparatus. All devices, appurtenances, appliances and apparatus intended to serve some special function, such as sterilization, distillation, processing, cooling, or storage of ice or foods, and that connect to the water supply system, shall be provided with protection against backflow and contamination of the water supply system. Water pumps, filters, softeners, tanks and all other appliances and devices that handle or treat potable water shall be protected against contamination. However, OPC & OPC describe specific hazards and how to protect them: Protection of potable water outlets. All potable water openings and outlets shall be protected against backflow in accordance with Section , , , , Page 5

Once again ASPE will join numerous organizations across the country to promote engineering as a career. If you are interested in contributing or just want to share some ideas, contact societies Education Program Coordinator Pam Newman at pnewman@aspe.org. I have to give you all some mad props. You have helped our chapter achieve some lofty accolades. First we received the chapter Award of Merit. The award of merit captures the spirit of dynamic volunteerism and is awarded on the basis of a chapter's accomplishment over the past year and measured by eleven distinct areas which range from the production of chapter newsletters and technical meetings to joint programs with other engineering related organizations. We also received the Membership Growth Award which is awarded to the chapter vice president membership for the membership year who successfully increased membership for his/her chapter. 9 (Continued from page 7) Membership Retention Award which is a little harder to get. The chapters only receive credit for those individuals that continue their membership over a number of years. There is no differentiation between the size of the chapters. To be a winner, the chapter must have retained 90% or more of its previous year s membership. Lastly, the Central Ohio Chapter was one of only six chapters nationally to be a Multiple Award Winner. One of the most difficult of all achievements in any one year is for a chapter to win all three membership awards: Award of Merit, Membership Growth and Membership Retention. Great job guys for your continued support of one of the best chapters in ASPE. That s all for now. Have a good and blessed Thanksgiving.
