7 UAB CRC Snapshot Physical space brought Project Manager official membership (.25 FTE) The Collegiate Recovery Community at UAB Membership promotes and advances students personal, academic, and professional achievement in Project requirements include: Management pursuit of Assistant long-term recovery from addictions (.5/.75 6 months of sobriety FTE) and co-occurring mental health disorders, Enrolled student health and wellbeing, and productive 20 Regular Nonengagement in society. Average 15 Members 2 Alum GPA Member 3.31 Participants

8 Collaboration Within Community Regular programming open to larger recovery community: Annual Recovery Conference, July 4 th Party, Meditation Weeks, and ongoing recovery support meetings. Participate in community wide events such as End Heroin Bham Walk, Bham Recovery Walk, JAFI Movie Nights, etc. Local sober living (4 th Dimension) collaboration for summer outdoor adventure trip Kayaking the Coosa River

9 Collaboration Within Division Student Health Services Sexual Health Clinic, Dietician and Athletic Trainer Student Counseling Services Eating Disorder Treatment Team, Provides assessments and referrals, Programmatic Collaboration, etc. Student Advocacy, Rights, and Conduct Medical withdrawals, Case Management, Referrals, etc. Lucky to have support from upper level administrators

10 Collaboration Within University January 2015: planning team convened, building on momentum from partnership for brief intervention; Bringing together interested stakeholders from university and hospital: representatives from counseling, health services, hospital s treatment program, student advocacy and conduct, and academic advising. Look for allies at all levels of leadership usually people affected by addiction. January June 2015: Mission statement and early marketing materials created; started disseminating idea to all leadership levels. Planning Team starts to pursue approval and funding for part-time CRC Project Assistant position (student position). November 2015: First strategic planning mini-retreat (1, 3, and 5-yr. plans) Engaged all planning team members in creating joint vision and where to best engage their individual talents and resources

11 Where We Are Now Working on formalizing student leadership body; Improving diversity, stepping up inclusion and social justice efforts. Some considerations: Ways of knowing: there are more paths to recovery than the 12 Steps; Race and ethnicity: we are struggling with these areas of diversity in the same way that the larger 12-Step community does; Gender: our own connections and collaborations with recovery communities that surround us can be limiting in this area; Co-occurring disorders and varying abilities: some representation already, but small; in our mission statement. Need full-time coordinator so program can keep growing at such quick pace; Starting to gain local, regional, and national attention will keep that up!
