Seaberg Program of Study: Accounting Semester of anticipated graduation: Bachelor s Degree at the end of FA13 Career goal: Become a CPA and help businesses and individuals alike make the best use of their resources and provide them with the opportunity to save money and grow their businesses. After a successful career in accounting I would like to spend my time in education. Tell us a little about yourself and your life: I came to Naples in April 2010 from Deerfield, IL (a north suburb of Chicago) initially to help support family and expected to return to Deerfield shortly after, however, I decided to stay in Naples and finish college (I had several credits from up north). I was always a hard worker and managed an auto repair shop up north, but I realized that in order for me to make the best use of my skills, I would need a college education. I couldn t be happier with my decision and look forward to a successful career thanks to Hodges University. What are your hobbies / extracurricular activities? I recently joined the Ambassadors Club and look forward to the community service projects we have planned as well as the friendships I will make. For anyone looking for a club to join, I highly recommend joining the Ambassadors Club. Outside of Hodges, I enjoy reading about politics and the economy. One of my favorite hobbies is playing golf at one of the many beautiful golf course here in south Florida. What has been your favorite class at Hodges University? Believe it or not, I have enjoyed all of my classes here from Business Law II with Prof. Hunter to Statistics with Prof. Gallagher to Finance with Prof. Clark. If I had to pick a favorite, I would say any class taught by Dr. Schneider. Dr. Schneider goes out of her way to ensure students have every opportunity to make the best of their education. It is clear she spends a lot of time out of class preparing the material in a way students can understand. In class she uses repetition, acronyms, and interactive class activities all of which has helped me to be successful at Hodges and is a great help to my larger goal of becoming a CPA. She is also very kind and offers her home phone number to all students. For these reasons and more, I would like to thank Dr. Schneider for making such an impact on my education. Congratulations, James!

7 University News Hodges PTA Core Student Chosen Congratulations to PTA Core student Madona Bowles. She was chosen to attend the annual Florida Physical Therapy Association s House of Delegates Assembly meeting in September in Orlando. Madona had the opportunity to observe the FPTA assembly meeting and conference events, all expenses paid. She was also be able to vote at the assembly meeting as a student representative. Congratulations, Madona! Stock Market Challenge Professor Farah will be starting the stock market competition game soon. Anyone can join at anytime during the game. Student Leadership Recognition Awards The Student Leadership Recognition Awards will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Fort Myers Campus. This is a great opportunity to support fellow students and acknowledge their hard work and dedication to Hodges University. Watch for more details in the coming weeks. Hodges Signs Got Your 6 Pledge Hodges University has signed a pledge to join the Education Pillar of Got Your 6 and support student veterans by implementing and enhancing resources, programs and policies to support this population. Got Your 6 is a campaign that unites the entertainment industry with top veteran-focused nonprofit organizations. The goal of the campaign is to bridge the civilian-military divide by creating a new conversation in America, so that veterans and military families are perceived as leaders and civic assets. Hodges University is joining dozens of colleges and universities nationwide committed to heighten their support for current and future students who are also military veterans. In the military, Got your six means I ve got your back. The saying originated with World War I fighter pilots referencing a plane s rear as the six o clock position. It is now a ubiquitous term in the military that highlights the loyalty and cooperation found in military culture. Hispanic Institute Hosts Conference The Hispanic Institute will host a conference on November 15th called Youth in Southwest Florida: Building Pathways to Success. Fort Myers Campus, Kleist Community Room (H364). 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. Admission is $ Students may attend for FREE with their school ID. The keynote speaker will be Nancy J. Graham, Ed.D., Lee County Superintendent of Schools. This conference will offer presentations and sessions to learn about a current research-based study which examines child and adolescent high risk behaviors and substance use and abuse in Lee and Collier counties. Participants will also gain knowledge of proactive solutions and best practices for meeting some of the challenges faced by many of our youth today such as issues in family functioning, academic difficulties, drug use, and other high risk behavior. Furthermore, participants will gain effective tools to help youth build pathways to success. 8 SCHOLARSHIP NEWS Hodges University has a new online scholarship application system. You can access this application by logging into your MyHUgo site, clicking on the Student Organizations tab at the top of the page, and then clicking Student Development. On the right side of the page under What s New, you will see a link for a stepby-step tutorial video, which explains the new application process. And you will also see a link for the new online scholarship application.
