2 About the Walk Date: Saturday, October 13th, 2018 Location: Gale Academy, 1631 W Jonquil Terrace, Chicago Time: 9:00 AM registration/t-shirt pickup; 10:00 AM step-off 300+ walkers participate, 75% from the north side of Chicago, including Rogers Park, and North Shore suburbs 1,000+ constituents receive Walkathon mailings 2,000+ local supporters are on our list All walkers are encouraged to create or join a team and collect pledges. Individual walkers are also welcome. All sponsors are invited to bring a team of walkers; the event is a fun-filled community-building opportunity. Children, pets, and strollers are welcome and encouraged! All walkers receive a t-shirt and a picnic lunch, and are entered into a free raffle.

3 Why we walk Family Matters has been walking for equity for 29 years. We walk, and work, to: - Overcome structural racism and systemic oppression. - Facilitate personal and collective justice and influence social change. - Nurture meaningful and life-changing relationships within homes, schools, and communities. - Engage youth through transformative educational experiences to foster a love of learning. - Close the education gap. - Support youth through school transitions and prepare them to be college- and career-ready. - Cultivate leaders that are confident, resilient, responsible, and accountable. - Prepare and support families in effectively navigating institutional and systemic constraints. Family Matters Programs: Boys to Men (Teen Boys Program) and That Goddess Power (Teen Girls Program) - Programs focused on academic support, leadership development, advococy, career planning/preparation, and relationship-building for youth ages Family Connections - leadership and literacy program for children in 1st through 6th grades Evening Tutoring - one-on-one tutor/mentor program which pairs youth with adults who work together at least once per week throughout the school year Project RISE - Summer paid internship experience for teens which includes job training and resume building skills

4 What you can do On Saturday, October 13, 2018, we will once again gather a group of 300+ friends and walk five miles together to raise awareness and funds for Family Matters.
