1 Senior Resource Center, Inc. Senior Resource Center, Inc., 912 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA Newsletter April 2017 Emergency Management Meeting Monday, April 3 10:00 am Senior Services Counseling Sessions April 12 & 26 In our Ninth Year Phone: Phone: (757) (757) Website: Website: info@vbsrc.com info@vbsrc.com facebook: facebook: :00 am - 1:00 pm Our main focus for this meeting will be to finalize the packet of information that we share with community members. If there is some particular information that you think we need to include, please let Barbara Henley know so that we can include it. Our target date is June 1, the beginning of hurricane season, so we need to ready ourselves for potential emergencies as quickly as possible. Be on the lookout for an announcement about the finalized time for a CERT training program if you want to sign up for that. We have made strides in getting our communication system up and running thanks to Don Spitzli and Linda Tingle. Thanks for participating in what is becoming a very good plan for our area to cope with emergency situations. Fond Memories Concert Friday, April 7 7:00 pm Our favorite musical group returns to entertain us. They are always upbeat, full of fun and get the audience fired up, so be sure to join us. The concert is free but please consider making a donation to the quintet to help them cover their expenses. Being a snack or dessert to share too, if you d like. Doors open at 6 p.m. Sabrina Carr from Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia Center for Aging will be with us on April 12 and 26 to provide individual counseling on questions regarding Medicare, handling claims and finding ways to save you money. Please stop by for your one-on-one session. Game Night Friday, April 15 6:30 9:00 pm Bring your favorite game or play one of ours and enjoy the camaraderie. Bring goodies to share. JOY Group and Pot Luck Lunch Tuesday, April 18 9:30 am Speakers will be Brian Warren and Lisa O Neil from Faith Works Coalition. Faith Works Coalition was established to eliminate poor living conditions in Hampton Roads communities by repairing homes for the elderly, disabled, disadvantaged and low-income families. Let Bruce and Lisa explain how you can help this organization to help your neighbors. Their motto is warm, dry, safe. As usual, come early for blood pressure check and be sure to bring something to share for the pot luck lunch to follow. Newsletter April 2017 Page 1
2 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Tuesday, April 25 11:30 am It s that time again to celebrate our wonderful volunteers. There will be a luncheon in your honor on April 25 at 11:30 a.m. to express our thanks and gratitude for all you do to make SRC what it is. We will have fried chicken and fixins from Creeds Café. You can call or stop by to let us know if you plan to attend. National Volunteer Week, April 23 29, 2017, brought to you by Points of Light, is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community. Service Unites, the theme for this year s National Volunteer Week, captures the power of change makers to come together to build stronger, more vibrant communities through service. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. Elizabeth Andrew Ode to a Volunteer -Author Unknown- Many will be shocked to find When the Day of Judgment nears That there s a special place in Heaven Set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners Satin couches and footstools Where there s no committee chair No group leaders or car pools. Telephone lists will be outlawed But a finger snap will bring Cool drinks and gourmet dinners And rare treats fit for a king. You ask, Who ll serve the privileged few.and work all they re worth? Why those who reaped the benefits And not once volunteered on earth! National Healthcare Decision Day (NHDD) will be celebrated all week long in April 2017! The importance of executing advance directives (Medical Power of Attorney) cannot be stressed enough and if you haven t already completed such a document (recommended for everyone over 18 years of age), this is the time to finally do it. Daily sub-themes for the special week are below: Sunday (4/16): Prepare -A day to get resources together Newsletter April 2017 Page 2
3 Monday (4/17): Start with Yourself- A day to think about your own healthcare decisions Tuesday (4/18): Family/Friends/Loved Ones- A day to discuss your wishes with others (and learn their wishes) Wednesday (4/19): Spread the Word- A day to tell others that you've engaged in advance care planning and encourage them to do the same Thursday (4/20): Facilities Focus- A day for healthcare providers of all sorts to promote advance care planning Friday (4/21): Professionals Preparedness- A day to ensure that all professionals (healthcare, clergy, legal, and others) understand and can promote advance care planning Saturday (4/22): Reflection and Readiness-File/share your advance care plans so they will be available if needed SRC will have copies of the State of Virginia approved advance directives forms for you to complete. 4 artist Henry Rawles, for donating many of his beautiful paintings to our center. Jim Oglesby was our auctioneer and did a great job! Sound of Music at Creeds Elementary School April 25 & 29 and May 3 The 5 th grade Voices of Expression, led by Robin Alexander, will be performing The Sound of Music on April 25 th and 29 th at 7:00 pm. and on May 3 at 1:30 pm. The show is free, but we are accepting donations to offset the cost of next year s show. This promises to be amazing! All are welcome. Dementia 101 If you didn t attend the Alzheimer s lecture on Feb. 28 at SRC, you missed one of the best lectures and largest attendance of any previous presentation. The turnout showed us how many of us are concerned about memory impairment, due to being a caregiver for someone for dementia or due to concerns that our own memory is failing. Speaker Heather Pasko from the Alzheimer s Assn. and Seniorcorp, educated us about the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer s disease (one of the many forms of dementia): Know the 10 Signs 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems. 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. 4. Confusion with time or place. 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. 8. Decreased or poor judgment. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. 10. Changes in mood or personality. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these signs, see a doctor to find the cause. Early diagnosis gives you a chance to seek treatment and plan for your future. You can call our local chapter of the Alzheimer s Assn. at for more information or go online at New Free Dementia Caregiver Resource FAMILIES (Family Access to Memory Impairment and Loss Information, Engagement and Supports) is a terrific new grant program offered by Riverside Center for Excellence in Aging and Lifelong Health. If you are a family caregiver of someone with Alzheimer s or other types of memory loss, you can sign up for 6 free counseling sessions at a location convenient to you. Information and support will be provided if you are eligible for the program. Call for more information and to see if you qualify. It may also be possible to receive help regarding respite care for your loved one during the counseling sessions. Reminder Only small brown prescription bottles are acceptable for donation to the SPCA for use with animal prescriptions. Please do not save white bottles for this use. Newsletter April 2017 Page 4
5 Farmers Market Hoedown Season Begins Can it be that time of year already? The 2017 Virginia Beach Farmers Market kicks off with a concert on April 7. The free concerts are every Friday night from 7 10 p.m., April October, rain or shine. Bring a chair or blanket. April 2017 Schedule: 7 th - Dallas Band 14 th Back Porch Boogie 21 st Timeline 28 th Straight from the Donations Jeff Goodchild for artwork from Henry Rawles collection Beverly Rawles donation of 20 pieces of Henry Rawles art collection Catherine Terranova Judith Brumley in honor of volunteer workers when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl? If I occasionally lose track of what we re talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can t, don t be nervous, impatient or arrogant. Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you. And when my old, tired legs don t let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked. When those days come, don t feel sad just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love. I ll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared. With a big smile and the huge love I ve always had for you, I just want to say, I love you my darling daughter. Author unknown, featured in Letter from a Mother to a Daughter. My dear girl, the day you see I m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I m going through. If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don t interrupt to say: You said the same thing a minute ago Just listen, please. Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep. When I don t want to take a bath, don t be mad and don t embarrass me.
