1 URSA EXPERIENCE PLANNING GUIDE WHAT TO EXPECT The Ursa Experience is a fun and exciting program for new students that help them make a successful transition to Missouri State University and begin to identify as a Bear. Students will be assigned to a small group led by a current Missouri State student facilitator (a Major), which provides them an opportunity to meet others, learn, and develop new attitudes and skills in a safe, supportive environment. Students will build strong bonds with peers, learn Missouri State history and traditions, and explore personal strengths. With team chants, campfires, and much more, this adventure experience emphasizes having fun and building social connections so that first-year students gain the confidence and support they need to be successful the minute they begin classes. The Ursa Experience is incredibly fun; however, any successful camp experience depends on the full interaction of all participants. Each student should come ready and willing to participate fully. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! CHECK-IN INFORMATION Ursa Experience Check-in will begin on the 2nd floor of the Plaster Student Union (in the NE Lobby across from the Information Desk) at 12:00 PM on Monday, August 14, A welcome program will begin promptly at 1:00 PM. Please arrive to Plaster Student Union around 12:00pm so you can check-in for the Ursa Experience. You do not need to bring any luggage to check-in. RESIDENCE HALL MOVE-IN Ursa Experience students will be able to move into their residence hall room on Monday, August 14 th beginning at 8:00 AM. Arrive at the residence hall to which you are assigned for the Fall semester and check in at the building s front desk. A staff member will provide you with your room keys. Our Ursa Majors will assist you in moving your belongings up to your room. As you will need to check in to the Ursa Experience starting at 12:00 PM, we encourage you to unpack only essential items at this time; you will have plenty of opportunity to fully unpack after the Ursa Experience concludes. WHAT IF I NEED TO ARRIVE ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 14TH (THE DAY BEFORE THE URSA EXPERIENCE)? Housing is not available on campus for students on Sunday, August 13th, thus, it will be the student s responsibility for securing housing that evening. The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau maintains a list of hotel options in the local area. Please contact Priscilla Childress at (417) or at pchildress@missouristate.edu if you have any questions about pre-event housing. COMMUTER STUDENT INFORMATION Attending the Ursa Experience is a great way to make friends if you are living at home your first-year at Missouri State. While the housing information above does not apply to you, know that you will be able to park your car on campus during the Ursa Experience, if applicable (please see the section below on parking information). You will need to arrive at the Plaster Student Union at between 12:00 PM 12:50 PM to check-in for the Ursa Experience. On the night of Monday, August 14 th, commuter students will stay at their home residence, returning to campus on August 15 th by 8 AM to board the buses for Windermere Conference Center. PARKING INFORMATION Family & Guest Parking (Monday, August 14th only) For family members and/or guests joining their student for the Ursa Kick-off on Monday, August 14, 2017, please feel free to park in Lot 15 behind the Foster Recreation Center. More information about parking and a temporary pass will for Family members will follow soon.

2 Commuter Student Parking (Monday, August 14th Wednesday, August 16th) Students commuting from home during their first year at Missouri State and needing to park on campus for the duration of the Ursa Experience will be able to park in Lot 15 Monday, August 14-Wednesday, August 16 th. You will receive your temporary parking permit in the coming weeks. Place your permit in the appropriate location in your vehicle (dashboard for the temporary permit). Residential Student Parking Starting Monday, August 14th Students residing on campus during their first year at Missouri State and planning to park on campus for the duration of the Ursa Experience should purchase a residence hall parking permit. Order a parking permit online on the Parking Administration website. You should receive your permit from Parking Administration in the mail within two weeks; however, you should print a temporary parking permit, available near the end of the purchasing process, if you believe the mailed permit will not reach you in time for the Ursa Experience. Place your permit in the appropriate location in your vehicle (rear-view mirror for the permit, dashboard for the temporary permit). Park in any lot matching your permit s color (red or green); see our parking map for red and green residence hall lot locations. WHAT TO BRING While we can provide you with packing suggestions, only you know what makes you comfortable. Please plan accordingly! You will be sharing a cabin with other participants. Please make sure that your luggage is in a self-contained, zipped bag. You will be carrying it yourself and it will be stored for a decent amount of time. Suggested Clothing When packing clothing for the Ursa Experience, please consider the following: Athletic shorts, t-shirts, and athletic shoes are generally the most appropriate articles of clothing for the Ursa Experience. A pair of jeans and a jacket or sweatshirt may also prove useful for activities like our campfire when the temperatures may drop a bit. Ample time will be spent both in- and outdoors. Pack and wear clothing that is comfortable to wear and will help keep you cool in the sun, heat, and humidity. Activities will continue rain or shine. Prepare for inclement weather, as rain can pop up unexpectedly. Some activities require various levels of physical activity. Your clothing will likely get sweaty, wet, and dirty, and you may want to change. There will not be laundry facilities at our campsite. Necessary (Please pack lightly!) Bed linens or sleeping bag Blanket Pillow and pillow case Bath towel and washcloths Personal toiletry articles o Toothbrush and toothpaste o Deodorant o Soap/body wash o Shampoo o Comb/brush o Shower shoes Suggested Packing List Optional (But encouraged!) Sunglasses Hat Lip balm Bug spray Umbrella or rain jacket Sweatshirt or light jacket Flashlight

3 Enough clothing for three days and two nights (and one extra pair of clothes for each day) One pair of comfortable, closed-toed shoes (sandals or flip-flops will NOT be allowed during physical activity) Swimsuit Prescription medicine (if needed) Bathing suit (if you want to swim) Sunscreen SPF (30 or higher) Please Do NOT Bring: A computer, laptop, or tablet Weapons Alcohol, tobacco, or drugs No Wi-Fi connection will be available at the campsite. Bring your personal cell phone at your own risk. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/QUESTIONS Where will I be sleeping? On August 14 th, residential students will sleep in their campus room. Commuter students will sleep at their personal home. On August 15 th, students will stay in air-conditioned, bunk-bed style cabin rooms. Cabin rooms have indoor plumbing, including sinks, toilets and individual shower stalls. Why does New Student & Family Programs recommend you leave your cell phones/electronic devices at home? We have found that cell phones (and other electronic devices such as ipods, computers, mp3 players, etc.) can become a distraction to students while at the Ursa Experience. Instead of engaging with each other, students may be tweeting, texting or updating Facebook statuses. By eliminating these distractions, participants have the opportunity to take advantage of all of the activities and resources that the Ursa Experience has to offer. Participants will be required to keep their cell phones off during the Ursa Experience. In addition, New Student & Family Programs is not liable for any loss of, damage to, or stolen electronics. Ursa Experience participants are completely responsible for all of their personal belongings. Can I bring family members or friends to the Ursa Experience? Family members and/or friends can see you off at the Ursa Experience Kick-off (Monday, August 14th at 1 PM in the Plaster Student Union Theatre), but they cannot accompany you for the rest of the program. If I need accommodations due to a disability, will those be provided for? Yes! We want to ensure all facilities and activities are accessible to you. Please send requests for special needs or accommodations to New Student and Family Programs at newbears@missouristate.edu or (417) as soon as possible so that we can make preparations. How can I be reached at the Ursa Experience? What if I need to reach my family? If you need to call home during the Ursa Experience, our professional staff members will have access to a cell phone. The cell phone number will be ed to you prior to the Ursa Experience. Family members can also use this cell phone number to reach you, if necessary. Can I cancel my reservation for the Ursa Experience? If you encounter unforeseen issues that force you to cancel your spot at the Ursa Experience, please notify New Student & Family Programs as soon as possible. However, please be advised that the Ursa Experience registration fee is non-refundable. To ensure that we can offer the lowest price possible, we must secure our conference facility and purchase supplies/materials in advance, and thus are unable to offer any refunds.

4 Will there be down time during the Ursa Experience to meet other students and to relax? Yes! While the Ursa Experience has a filled schedule over its two nights and three days, there is indeed free time built into the schedule. During free time you will have the opportunity to play games & sports, go swimming, or just hang out to get to know one another! What meals will be provided? Will there be options if I am a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and/or have any food allergies or dietary needs? For lunch on August 14 th, students (and families) will need to eat before Ursa check-in or after Ursa check-in but before the Ursa kick-off starts. The Plaster Student Union vendors will be open. Starting with the evening meal on August 14 th, all meals and snacks are provided by the Windermere Conference Center or Missouri State Dining Services. The food is delicious and varies from day to day. If you have a special dietary need, please contact New Student & Family Programs at newbears@missouristate.edu or (417) as soon as possible so that we may provide reasonable accommodations. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION As outlined in the confirmation you received, please make sure to complete & sign the Ursa Experience Waiver Forms and complete the StrengthsQuest Inventory. This all needs to be completed by FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 at the latest. WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
