1 WELLNESS CENTRE ACTIVITIES SEMINAR ON STRESS AND BURNOUTAT RUIRU CAMPUS On 23 rd September, 2014 the Centre visited Ruiru Campus and held a seminar on Stress and Burnout Management facilitated by the Director, Wellness Centre, Dr. Sammy Tumuti and the counsellors Ms. Evelyn. Waweru and Mrs. Jassy Nyanyuki. The seminar was very well attended by a total of 91 staff and students. The participants were tested for the stress level using the Stress-dot Test. The result showed that, the participants stress level ranged from moderate to high. However, most of them were not aware that they were stressed. The level of burnout was assessed using Burnout Self-test. Most of the participants indicated moderate level, and others indicated a high level of burnout. The seminar included sub-topics such as definitions, differences between stress and burnout, factors associated with burnout, symptoms of burnout, the physiological, psychological and social effects, and the strategies of managing stress and burnout. The participants appreciated the seminar and felt empowered to manage stress and burnout. The Director, Ruiru Campus Dr. Edward Kigen, who followed the seminar keenly expressed his gratitude and said that the seminar was timely. He requested the Wellness Centre to organize similar seminars for his campus in every semester.

Participants follow keenly (see the attached program and the list of attendance) STRESS AND BURNOUT MANAGEMENT SEMINAR AT NYERI/NANYUKI CAMPUS On 14 th October, 2014 the Centre held a joint seminar for the two campuses in Nyeri Campus Sixty three (63) staff and students attended the seminar. Dr. Ngare, the Director of the two Campuses had invited students and staff from Nanyuki Campus over to Nyeri Campus for the seminar. The seminar included sub-topics such as definitions, differences between stress and burnout, factors associated with burnout, symptoms of burnout, the physiological, psychological and social effects, and the strategies of managing stress and burnout. The participants appreciated the seminar and felt empowered to manage their stress and burnout. The participants expressed their appreciation and noted that the knowledge and skills acquired would help them to manage their stress and burnout. They hoped that they would be better and productive workers.

TRAINER OF TRAINERS (TOT) FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS IN THE MAIN CAMPUS The Wellness Centre is mandated to campaign against Alcohol and Drug abuse in all of our campuses.

4 TRAINER OF TRAINERS (TOT) FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS IN THE MAIN CAMPUS The Wellness Centre is mandated to campaign against Alcohol and Drug abuse in all of our campuses. Consequently, the Wellness Centre conducted a very successful Trainer of Trainers (TOT) at the Main Campus on 16 th to 20 th September, Eight five (85) staff and students participated. This is a very popular training. It had had attracted 144 applicants but only 85 were selected for the training. The participants were issued with certificates at the end training. The group that was trained will break into smaller groups called Cells. These Cells will be actively involved in different activities aimed at campaigning against alcohol and drug abuse within the campus and in the neighboring community. The activities would include, seminars, distribution of materials on campaign against alcohol and drug abuse, organizing talks, clean-ups and training others on the same. The trained staff and students will serves as the ambassadors in campaigning against alcohol and drug abuse in the campus. TRAINER OF TRAINERS (TOT) FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS IN KITUI CAMPUS On 24 th -26 th September, 2014 the counsellors headed by the Director, Dr Sammy Tumuti visited Kitui Campus to conduct a Trainer of

5 TRAINER OF TRAINERS (TOT) FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS IN KITUI CAMPUS On 24 th -26 th September, 2014 the counsellors headed by the Director, Dr Sammy Tumuti visited Kitui Campus to conduct a Trainer of Trainers seminar on alcohol and Drug Abuse. A total of 47 (6 staff members and 41 Students) were trained and were expected to spearhead various activities aimed at campaigning against alcohol and drug abuse in their Campus. This group will have a major task of being ambassadors to campaign against alcohol and drug abuse and also help their comrades affected already. Graduates pose for a group photo They will work in groups called Cells and will be submitting the reports of their activities to Wellness Centre counselors for follow up and supervision. This is believed that it will reduce many prevalence issues of alcohol and drugs abuse within and outside the Campus. All the 47 trained participants were issued with certificates. The graduation ceremony was presided over by Dr. Nzau, the deputy Director of Kitui Campus. He encouraged the graduates to reach out to their comrades. KM CLEAN UP On 17 th September, 2014 the Wellness Centre staff together with the TOTs led by the Director, Dr. Sammy Tumuti carried out a campaign against alcohol and drug abuse at KM market. The campaign involved a clean up at the market food court where majority of KU students buy their food staff, issuing of literature materials on ADA and speeches. This exercise was well

6 received by both the KM leadership and residents. The activity started from a.m to 2.00 p.m. The community really appreciated the gesture and promised to keep the area off drugs. 9 CULTURE WEEK The Wellness Centre actively participated in the culture week from 20 th -24 th September, 2014 held at the Bishop Square. The Centre s staff, TOT and invited official from NACADA manned the tent where by we were able to talk to visitors about Wellness Centre, attend to counseling cases, answered several questions on drugs, and distributed literature and materials containing useful information on alcohol and drug abuse. The Wellness Centre s tent received several visitors who were both staff and students. Cases that were not able to be handled at the tent were referred to the counselors at the Wellness Centre. The invited official from NACADA who is also a counselor boosted the effort to deliver the services. He worked hand in hand with the counselors and TOTs from Wellness Centre. The Centre has enjoyed its partnership with NACADA and the support NACADA gave in terms of resource materials, human power etc.

11 COUNSELLORS TRAINING From 25 th 27 th February 2015, the Centre organized a training for counsellors which was held at BSSC. The training was very successful and useful as the counsellors were taken through the following topics which equipped them in their profession. They were taken through the following topics: Trauma and related issues, Marital and Family Therapy, Adolescent and Youth Counseling and Mentorship Programs, Students and Career Counseling, Professional Growth Counseling, Supervision, Community Counseling and Loss and Grief The facilitators included Mr. Kimani Githongo J and Nancy W. Kimani among others from International Professional Psychologists and Counselors. Counsellors follow carefully as Mrs. Kimani, one of the facilitators train

Out of the 26 participants, 23 were students while 3 were staff members. The training targeted mostly 1 st and 2 nd years. The participants were taken through various topics such as;- i. Definition of terms and classification of drugs ii. Causes and Effects of ADA iii. Communication skills iv. Drug and Spirituality v. Addiction, Rehabilitation and Relapse vi. Laws related to ADA vii. Basic counselling skills

The training was officially opened by Dr. Ann, deputy director Nyeri Campus who welcomed the facilitators and the trainees. The training was attended by 29 participants who comprised of 28 students and 1 staff member. Students and staff present were equipped with skills and knowledge to train others on substance abuse prevention. Be able to identify individuals affected by substance abuse in the community and offer them appropriate referrals services. The participants formed a group that will spearhead a campaign of creating awareness about the community. The following topics were covered; i. Definition of terms and classification of drugs ii. Causes and Effects of ADA iii. Communication skills iv. Drug and Spirituality

will help them become trainers on substance abuse prevention.

Basic counselling skills The participants were happy with the training and felt that it will help them become trainers on substance abuse prevention. The seminar targeted both staff and students and it attracted 29 participants with 28 students and one staff member. The participants were taken through various topics which included causes of stress and burn out, how to control and manage stress and burnout. The seminar was closed by Dr. Nzioka, Deputy Director Kitui Campus who thanked the facilitators for timely topics which would help the students and staff to deal with stress and burnout.
