In addition to being a forum for channeling ideas, YVIC 2017 workshop was also a place to develop a sense of volunteerism through innovation. UNV Indonesia held the 2017 Youth Volunteering Innovation Challenge (YVIC) workshop in Jakarta on April 2017, with the support of the UNV Regional Office in Bangkok and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Indonesia, with the theme "Developing Skills for Life and Work through Volunteerism. This workshop was aimed to find and support innovative volunteering activities on social impacts and sustainable development. The interest and enthusiasm of the youth towards the YVIC was seen from 75 proposals that were submitted to the UNV between 30 January and 5 March A total of 23 participants from eight selected teams came together to Jakarta from all over The two-day event served as a venue for information and knowledge sharing that was provided by guest speakers as well as among the young volunteers. The guest speakers shared their knowledge and practical experience on the basics of volunteerism, volunteer management, theory of change and designing thinking, and more. Participants were accompanied by mentors in order to receive advice in refining their proposed ideas. At the end of the workshop, three teams were selected to receive financial and mentorship support while prototyping their projects. The three teams that were selected are: Deafriends which offers sign language class and certification for the hearing impaired to work as a sign language interpreter; RobinHerb will support unemployed/school drop-out youth through creative waste recycling activities; Warung Imajinasi will develop the capacities of high school students in the Kertasari district to equip them with leadership and better learning skills to contribute to developing their communities. Following the one and a half month-prototyping, one final team with the strongest progress and results achieved will attend the YVIC regional workshop in Bangkok, Thailand in June

4 Outreach UNV introduced to KOICA Giving presentation to AIESEC in discussion organized by UNIC Jakarta Dasom Hwang, UN Youth Volunteer, UNICEF, gave a general presentation on UNV and UNV Indonesia to KOICA On 27 April 2017, Dasom Hwang, an International UN Youth Volunteer in Indonesia, gave a short speech about UNV to Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Dasom was invited to introduce UNV as a part of the programme during KOICA s annual field evaluation meeting with all KOICA volunteers serving in Indonesia. From how to become a UN Volunteer to her work in UNICEF, numerous information were shared. Participants from KOICA showed their enthusiasm in listening to her stories that they spent over 10 minutes during the Q and A session. They asked her motivation why she volunteers at UNICEF Indonesia, the benefits she receives as a UN Volunteer, etc. Dasom Hwang serves as a UN Volunteer in Child Protection and Development, with her professional skills in data management. Jakarta Ga Hyung Byun, UN University Volunteer in Communications, UNV Indonesia, attended a discussion with AIESEC to promote UNV At the discussion held by United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), with AIESEC from Prasetyamulya attended, Ga Hyung Byun, UN University Volunteer in Communications at UNV Field Unit Indonesia, gave a presentation about UNV on 10 May As AIESEC is known for its volunteering activities as well, students showed great interest in how to become an UN Volunteer and what activities UN Volunteers do. A number of students approached Ga Hyung after the discussion to talk more about UN Volunteers. The discussion lasted over an hour with Ms. Eshila Maravanvika, Acting Director of UNIC Jakarta where she gave a presentation about the UN system. Participants from AIESEC also forwarded various interesting questions regarding the works of UNV in Indonesia and the United Nations. 4

5 Observances Celebrating International Day of UN Peacekeepers with UN Volunteers Launch of UNV Indonesia webpage Under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Indonesia website ( n/home/), now UNV Indonesia has its own webpage. Democratic Republic of Congo Arie Wijanarko, former UN Volunteer, MONUSCO, with local school children during a visit to see a UN aircraft and to be more familiar with it To observe the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, which is commemorated every on 29 May, UNV Indonesia has collected interviews from former and current UN Volunteers from Indonesia in peacekeeping missions. Starting from 5 th May, every Friday interviews and photos of UN Volunteers in peacekeeping were posted on UNV Indonesia official facebook page ( All of the interviewees served in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Conge (MONUSCO) as UN Volunteers and said that they were very grateful to have the experience. The webpage contains various information such as the mandate of UNV; types of UN Volunteers; how to become as well as host UN Volunteers; latest news about UN Volunteers in Indonesia, etc., both in Bahasa Indonesia and English. Audiences can read about activities done by UNV Indonesia through Latest News. Newsletters will be also uploaded bimonthly. Volunteer Story will provide interview with UN Volunteers serving in Indonesia. With the launch of its webpage, UNV Indonesia looks forward to regularly updating audiences in Indonesia about UN Volunteers and its main activities. 5

6 Meet-up Sharing experience among UN Volunteers at the regular meet-up UNV Indonesia had its May regular meetup on 30 May As part of UNV exchange and peer learning, Dinah Abd El Aziz and Dinda Veskarahmi gave presentations about how they work and specific tasks are in their host agencies. Dinda Veskarahmi, a national UN Volunteer, started her presentation with a brief introduction about herself. Before joining the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) she worked at a private company and also at an NGO. Dinah, as an international UN Volunteer, previously served at the United Nations Resident Coordinator s Office (UN RCO) in Indonesia till November Currently she serves at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Indonesia. She gave an insightful presentation comparing the different characteristics of works she has supported at the UN RCO and UNODC. The opportunity to reach out to and work with other UN agencies and national counterparts while coordinating various issues was definitely unique and valuable to her. It allowed her to learn many new aspects before, such as the financial inclusion. Dinah also very much enjoys working at the UNODC, more focusing on specifics issues according to the UNODC mandate. Her main role is monitoring and evaluating all UNODC implemented projects, as well as supporting external relations with partners and resource mobilization. Work experiences both in private and public sectors helped better equip herself for the current UNV assignment at the UNICEF as a fundraising communication officer. The best part of her work is making people better understand about what impacts UNICEF creates for children to live in a safer and healthier environment through human interest stories she writes with all interesting information collected from the field. She completed her presentation saying that the farther I step, the more I am proud to work as UN Volunteers. With 16 UN Volunteers participated, UNV regular meet-up for May has ended successfully. 6

7 Interview Interview with our intern, Fajar Fajar Putu Handoko has just completed his internship at UNV Field Unit Indonesia. Fajar has supported UNV Indonesia for communications, such as handling the social media platform, developing the content plan and also generating online activation. Moreover, Fajar also played a role in organizing Youth Volunteering Innovation Challenge (YVIC) and other events, like UNVisit to Binus University. Here is the interview with Fajar. 1. Please introduce yourself My name is Fajar Putu Handoko and I support the communication activities including social media for UN Volunteers Indonesia. I achieved my masters degree in Corporate Communication and Public Relations at University of Leeds, England. 2. What is you impression on UNV Indonesia? UNV is one of the coolest organizations that I have worked with. And I picked the right decision to be an intern here as I learned so many things that I have not while I was studying. 3. Have you volunteered before? If yes, what have you done? I had volunteered for several local organizations in my hometown, Bandung. I worked with my fellow scholarship awardees to help war veteran who are still active carrying out their daily activities. I also volunteered by doing charity activities in a remote area near my hometown. 4. Why did you choose to do internship at UNV? UNV offers me so many opportunities by letting me handle the social media platforms and develop new ideas which would be good for the organization. Moreover, I had an opportunity to meet new people ranging from national to international level. Thus, I would be able to gain my confidence while facing such situation in the future. 5. What do you want to learn or how do you want to develop yourself through this internship? Sharpening my communication skills and also learning to cope with a fast pace environment, which I think would be beneficial for my in the future career. 7
