4 President s Message Dear AMO Members, We have been running We believe in AMO since year 2012, in which AMO represents awareness campaign, membership drive and optometry upgrade! In the awareness campaign, we addressed the needs on amendment of the Optical Act 1991 and created public awareness on Optometry through media and series of vision screenings. This year onwards, we would now move on to promote Optometrist. In conjunction with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2016/2017, we launched the new campaign for membership drive Jom, join AMO!. During the limited timeline, from 3 rd April 2016 to 17 th April 2016, the newly joined member is entitled for special sign-up gifts and the lapsed member can be waived for their registration fees. Besides, we have introduced the lifetime membership this year! Our aim is to build professional relationship through network interaction in every state and to unite all optometrists in Malaysia. We wish to have more optometrists be in line with us on upgrading themselves via Continual Professional Development (CPD) programmes and to contribute back to the community AMO needs your support and participation to upgrade the optometry profession. Together, we can make a difference! 1 Profession! 1 voice! Jom, join AMO!. Murphy Chan AMO President 4

16 Opening Eyes Visual Screening The Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program is a collaborative effort to provide vision and eye health screenings to those with special needs who are those suffering from intellectual disability. Its aim is to reach out to this largely under privileged group in order to improve their visual health. On the 31st January 2016, approximately 40 volunteers participated in the Opening Eyes screening event which was held in Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The Lions Clubs International with the assistance of the Association of Malaysian Optometrists (AMO) managed to recruit volunteer Lions club members and eye care professionals such as ophthalmologist, optometrist, optometry students and educators conducted the visual screening. It is recognised that the volunteers had diverse skills, and come from different backgrounds. Therefore, the volunteers were briefed beforehand about the purpose of the event and were provided with the essential preparatory information to ensure smooth event. More than 50 children with special needs had been screened on the day with prescription eyewear provided to approximately half of them, albeit in mere 4 hours. Lions club played a crucial volunteer role, assisting with registration and guiding the children throughout the whole screening event. Concurrently, the optometry students from SEGi University and academic staff delivered vision screenings, comprising of distance and near visual acuity test, colour vision test, and binocular vision screening such as stereoacuity test and cover test. Children who needed further visual assessments were then referred to the optometrists and ophthalmologists for eyeglasses prescription. The screening event would not have been complete without the support from the Essilor Vision Foundation which is the official global supplier of ophthalmic lenses to the Special Olympics Opening Eyes program. On the whole, all volunteers have sacrificed their time and talents for this true team effort in positively promoting the event and in ensuring the best possible experience at the event. Through this simple yet meaningful visual screening event, these special children were able to garner essential vision care which is imperative to their learning ability and physical development such as fine and gross motor skills. By sheer hard work, the event has certainly succeeded in serving as a platform for the special community to have access to quality care that is appropriate to their particular needs. The outcome of the event was indeed truly rewarding and eye-opening for all involved. Lim Kang Ye Event Program Manager, SEGi Optometry Club. 16
