2 Continued from Page 1 The NCL, Inc. National Nominating Committee will be accepting applications for the following National positions: NCL, INC. NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Elect Vice President Treasurer Must have previously served one term on the NBoD Region II Director Region IV Director Must have served two years on Chapter board & reside in Region At Large Director #4 At Large Director #5 Must have served two years on Chapter board & reside in any Region NCL, INC. NATIONAL NOMINATING COMMITTEE Chairman Elect Must have served anytime on the NNC Region I Representative Region III Representative Region V Representative Must reside in the Region At Large Representative #2 May reside in any Region "No way I can't do that" were my first words in reference to taking on a national role. I didn't think I had enough experience. But, having received a personal call from a very close friend that I look up to, I figured if she thought I could do it, then I should try it. Being surrounded by such strong leaders has given me the opportunity and personal support I needed to become a more confident leader and community member. Listening to my friends has been a very smart decision on my part. If your friends are encouraging you to "go for it" then you should listen to them. I feel blessed everyday to have been given this opportunity and was smart enough to join the NCL national team! Katie Erzen Oregon Rose Chapter Are you asking yourself Why Me? I have so much to do, why should I step up? I too had those thoughts, but I listened, learned, and knew it was time to take my contribution to a higher level. YOU can too. Share your passion and commitment with other dedicated women to insure the continuing evolution of NCL as the pre mier mother/ daughter organization in the country. 4 Patroness Attendance Reminder Life gets busy and sometimes we tend to put things off till later, only to forget them. If you are like me, there is a good chance you have missed logging in some of the patroness meeting attendance dates for this year. Each patroness needs to attend a minimum of 5 meetings during the period from April 1, 2011 to March 31, Here are the eligible patroness meeting dates we have had this year: April 17 New Member Welcome May 12 New Member orientation ( provisionals) OR May 22 Spring Tea June 12 Philanthropy Fair Sept 25 Patroness Mtg. Oct 23 Patroness Mtg. at St Andrew's Care Facility There are five more meetings between November and March 31. Hope to see you there! The Path to Philanthropy Partnerships Gretchen Jenkins VP Philanthropy Naomi Matthews Fisher rnldfish@frontier.com As the philanthropy committee works to add new chapter partnerships, I wanted to give everyone a glimpse of the selection process. It can take time to make connections when both parties are volunteer run organizations. We work to make sure the partnership will benefit both parties; we want to provide meaningful opportunities for our members. While we have a set of guidelines to consider, each potential philanthropy also has requirements of their own. Sometimes the policies are at odds. Many times we run into age requirements and minimum hour requirements that our chapter cannot meet. Often times scheduling is an issue; our daughters are in school during the week, when many philanthropies are needing help. If another NCL chapter has already partnered with a philanthropy, there are extra steps in the process of making sure there are enough opportunities to support both chapters volunteers and additional approval. Once the parties agree to move forward, there is documentation to collect. Along with a signed agreement, we also request financial statements to verify how their funds are used. We also ask for insurance certificates and proof of IRS non profit status. Our goal is to create a positive experience for both our NCL members and fulfill a genuine need in our community. Reminder you can always volunteer with our partners on off calendar events. For example, the Oregon Food Band and SOLV have on going opportunities. See their website and contact the philanthropy liaison with any questions. Look under the File Tab / Philanthropy folder for additional information/requirements on training and background checks. Specific Volunteer Requirements: OHS Family Support Center CHAP Training Needed? One time Application Required No No St Andrews Background Check? No Adults Only If over 18 Not with NCL Group, But needed if non scheduled activity Off calendar Opportunities? Over 16 can sign up for longer commitments Yes Yes Yes, contact Susan at the Care Center NCL Sunnyside 4
5 TICKTOCKER TIMES From Liz Murphy, VP Ticktockers We just completed our Ticktocker Survey and Ticktocker Council Meeting on October 23 rd. This was the second year our Chapter has held both of these events. This year s Survey was completed by over 50% of our Ticktockers, which was almost a 20% improvement over last year! Having been with the Sunnyside chapter since the beginning, having served as a GLA and now as VP Ticktockers and President Elect, I cannot even begin to share my vantage point of how much NCL is having a profound influence in our daughter s lives as well as our own. I am forever awestruck when I talk to your daughters, whether it be in such events as Officer Training or Ticktocker Council meetings, to see how poised and mature they are. They all have something to share and a desire to be a part of something bigger than themselves. I thought it would be selfish of me not to share some of the responses your daughters gave to the following Ticktocker Survey question: What would you tell someone if they asked you why you belong to NCL and what the experience means to you? I would tell them that I like NCL because I like doing the charity events. It is really fun and it makes me feel good about myself. It also looks good for colleges. The experience for me is to learn new things and get out there in the world. It s a lot of fun to do things for the community while also having fun with your mom and friends. I would tell them it s very enjoyable. Even though it may seem like a lot, in the end it s really not. The experience means becoming closer to my mom and getting to help the community in a better way. It gets me to spend more time with my mom and sister. The experience exercises my social and professional skills that I will need later in life. I belong to NCL to gain skills for everyday life and while doing it, helping out my community, bonding with friends and my mom, and feeling good about individual growth. I belong because my mom made me do it, but I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. This experience means a lot because it s helping me develop friendships outside of my school and to work in our community. I get to do things that will help our community and it teaches me things that will be helpful in the future. NCL Sunnyside 5
6 Meeting Minutes National Charity League, Inc. Sunnyside Chapter Patroness Meeting Abundant Life Church October 23, 2011 National Charity League, Inc., Sunnyside Chapter Patroness Meeting St. Andrews Care Facility October 23, 2011 Meeting called to order: by President Sheri Doerfler at 2:00 pm Reminder that today s meeting, held at St. Andrew s Care Center counts as two league hours and two philanthropy hours, as we were presenting Smile Balloons and conversing with the residents. Inspiration: Diane Smith Kind Words, by Mother Theresa Motions: To approve the September, 2011 Patroness Meeting Minutes, by Janet Johnson, seconded by Dewaina Scafidi, all in favor, motion approved. Motion to approve the May, 2011 business meeting portion of the Annual Tea, by Janet Johnson, seconded by Sharon Shuman, all in favor, motion approved. (Note: The May 2011 meeting minutes were not previously approved at the June Philanthropy Fair business meeting). Officer Reports: Patty Ottaway, Co-VP Membership: Currently updating membership forms which need completing annually. If you have been given a membership form or sponsorship form to be completed, please return to Patty as soon as possible. As we approach the end of the first half of our NCL calendar year, Naomi Fisher will be sending out an to those who currently have under half the required hours. This is simply an FYI to make it easier for each of us to ensure hours compliance for the remainder of the year. Liz Murphy, VP Ticktockers/President Elect: The Ticktocker Council met today at Liz s home to review the Ticktocker Survey results. Over 55% of the Ticktockers participated in the survey. Liz appreciated the conversation in the Council Meeting today and will be publishing results/findings/suggestions for membership review in the near future. Sheila Greer, Treasurer: Reported that the Treasurer s Report in the Septmember, 2011 Patroness Meeting Minutes reflected incorrect account balances for the month of August. Sheila will give corrected balance amounts to the Recording Secretary to be published. 7 Julie Harvey, SOLV: Julie circulated a nice appreciation card she received for the SOLV, Down the River Cleanup. One of our NCL, Sunnyside Chapter, rafts was pictured on the front of the card. Sheri Doerfler: From our District Philanthropy Representative, reported that we have an opportunity to write/ make appreciation cards for our soldiers in Afghanistan. In order for the cards to go out in a bulk mailing, the cards will have to be returned to Sheri Doerfler, Julie Atchison, or Gretchen Jenkins by the November Patroness meeting. Creating these cards will earn each participating Patroness or Ticktocker up to a maximum of three philanthropy hours. A good rule of thumb is approximately eight to ten cards per hour. The cards can be holiday or general appreciation cards with a sentiment of gratitude written on each one. Envelopes are not necessary. An additional note, it was mentioned that some may also choose to do holiday cards for the residents of St. Andrews Care Center. New Business: Sheri Doerfler, President: Explanation of the National Dues Increase, (the amount our chapter has to pay National for each Patroness/Ticktocker) what it covers and the way our chapter has proposed to handle the increase. National has proposed an increase in Patroness annual dues from $25 to $27.50 and Ticktocker annual dues from $20 to $27.50, aligning the fee for both. Up until recently, this fee was scheduled to be effective in the 2012/2013 NCL calendar year. Sheri has since been informed that the increase from National will be postponed until the following year. Looking ahead at the growth of our chapter, a possible need to move meeting facilities in the foreseeable future (Abundant Life is currently free), the need to rent a facility for our Annual Tea, the possibility of separating the Senior Recognition program from the Tea Event with upcoming classes with high numbers, the request for more outside speakers at our meetings, the Board is proposing that we go ahead with the increase effective the 2012/2013 NCL calendar year. In addition, the Board proposes an increase in the Tea fee of $5 per Patroness/Ticktocker, for an annual fee of $20. Motions: To increase the membership dues from $75 to $85 per year for each Patroness/Ticktocker effective 2012/2013, by Mylissa Azorr, seconded by Liz Murphy, motion approved. To increase the fee for the Annual Tea from $15 to $20 per Patroness/Ticktocker, effective 2012/2013, by Liz Murphy, seconded by Michelle Allen, motion approved. Questions regarding these fee increases can be addressed to Sheri Doerfler or Sheila Greer. In response to a request for the break down of the Annual Tea budget, Sheri Doerfler agreed to post this information on the web site. Board Interest Form: Sheri Doerfler has previously sent out an with a Board Interest Form attached. Anyone interested in serving as a Board member next year can fill out the form and give to Sheri by the November Patroness meeting. The new Board with be voted on in the March meeting and will be effective in June of Sheri is happy to chat with anyone interested who may have questions about positions or Board information. League vs. Philanthropy Hours: Sheri clarified that all work done as a philanthropy liaison, GLA, committee or Board member, can be counted toward league hours. Preparation for events or meetings, meetings with philanthropy contacts, etc., all qualify as league hours. These hours add up so everyone is encouraged to keep track and enter these on the web site. Philanthropy hours are actual hours that you do service for a particular philanthropy. A request was made to further clarify on our website home page, what constitutes hours earned. Sheri Doerfler agreed to post this information. Adjournment: The business portion of the meeting was adjourned at 2:50 pm. Service Project: The membership then delivered smiley face balloons and interacted with the residents at St. Andrews Care Center. Minutes respectfully submitted by Marge Jacobson, Recording Secretary. NCL Sunnyside 7
