1 Prospective New Member Packet

2 National Charity League Dear Prospective NCL Member, We appreciate your interest in the of National Charity League, Inc. You probably have a lot of questions about our organization and our involvement in the community. This packet has been prepared to answer your questions and help you understand what membership in National Charity League entails. The pages marked Return to Sponsor should be completed and given back to your sponsor for membership submission and consideration. National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) is a unique organization of mothers and daughters. Our purpose is to provide mother-daughter philanthropic support to those in need in our community. We also provide educational and cultural opportunities for our daughters, which we hope will enhance their development into compassionate and community-involved young women. A sixyear plan has been developed that provides a wide variety of activities for our daughters. The following pages will explain more fully the activities in which our Chapter engages and the responsibilities of membership. It is important that you understand that there are financial, service hour, and attendance obligations of membership. While there are obligations, you will also see that there are many benefits, as well. We are a very involved and committed organization, which focuses on fostering the mother-daughter relationship. Please be aware that we do have class size limitations. Submission of the Membership Forms in no way implies membership acceptance. It is important that you recognize and consider the time involved in belonging to such an organization. Please read the enclosed information carefully and consider the requirements for you and your daughter. Your Sponsor and Co-Sponsor will be glad to answer any questions you might have regarding National Charity League, Inc. Sincerely, Monica Moreira and Lori Solorzano Vice Presidents, Membership Michelle Stark President

3 The Legacy of National Charity League, Inc. In 1925, a small group of women in Los Angeles, interested in philanthropic work, met together calling themselves The Charity League. They worked quietly, doing Red Cross work, making layettes and assembling and delivering food baskets to the needy at holiday time. A few daughters met with their mothers to help; one of these daughters was the future Mrs. Paul William Lawrence, considered the founder of National Charity League. By 1938, daughters of The Charity League decided to form their own group and named themselves Ticktockers. Organized under the guidance of Mrs. Bruce Anderson and Mrs. Lawrence, this was the first youth group of Charity League. September 10, 1947 is the date of the incorporation of National Charity League and it is the original mother-daughter charity. National Charity League, Inc. is currently comprised of 192 local Chapters in 22 states with more than 50,000 total members who, in the fiscal year, volunteered a cumulative total of 1,056,721 hands-on hours directly with not-for-profit philanthropic organizations in their communities. Since its inception, the standards and policies of NCL have been to strengthen the mother-daughter relationship through philanthropic work. Our organization is the only mother-daughter volunteer force of its kind serving local communities together. We are indeed very proud of our legacy and grateful to that small group of women in Los Angeles in The Purpose and Mission of National Charity League National Charity League is a mother-daughter organization. The mothers are called Patronesses and the daughters are called Ticktockers. The purpose of National Charity League is to provide opportunities for mothers and daughters to become involved in community service and also to enjoy their mother-daughter relationships in educational and cultural activities. Our mission is: 1. Community Service: To learn what needs exist in the community and to assist with these needs whenever possible. 2. Education: To provide leadership opportunities and activities which enhance social confidence. These include attending and conducting meetings properly and attending and planning educational events. 3. Cultural Growth: To broaden ourselves culturally by attending and experiencing a variety of cultural events annually over a six year period. The goals of National Charity League are carried out through mother-daughter involvement in community, philanthropic, educational and cultural activities. The Ticktocker experience strives to provide opportunities for each girl to know the joy of helping others, to learn tolerance and kindness and to make friends while sharing and participating in these activities.

4 The Ticktocker Program The purpose of the Ticktocker Program is to encourage charitable experiences and to cultivate the motherdaughter relationship in philanthropic, cultural and educational endeavors. This is a six-year program designed to offer five areas of growth and development for young ladies in grades seven through twelve. Highlights of the five areas are as follows: Caring and Sharing through our Philanthropies Being aware that there are others less fortunate Accepting disabilities in others Learning we each have something to give and our inherent responsibilities towards those less able Officer and Membership Training A basic understanding of parliamentary procedures How to lead and participate in business meetings Developing leadership and public speaking skills Handling the duties of each office held Accepting the responsibility of completing tasks Etiquette and Social Graces Planning and executing formal teas and luncheons Good manners and etiquette workshops Thank you notes, formal invitations and responses The art of conversation Tasteful and appropriate dress Poise and self-esteem (Modelette Program) Education and Fun Beach and/or swim parties Fun Philanthropic Workshops where yearly sewing commitments can be completed Father Daughter Events sporting events, fishing, Speed Zone, etc. Mother Daughter Cultural Events the theater, museums, etc. Job Training through Philanthropies Learning to work with people in diverse circumstances Experiences that may be used on a job application We work very hard at our Ticktocker Program and are proud of the young ladies who have completed the program. National Charity League provides an opportunity to enrich our daughters lives and cultivate many facets of experience.
