Nicky Morgan Awards 2014, which does so much to celebrate the brightest and the best, in one of the most challenging professions. I m pleased that this event recognises the crucial role that our social workers play, and the immeasurable contribution they make to society. Tragic events like those that have been recently reported in Rotherham have once again highlighted the importance of dedicated social work which puts the protection of vulnerable children - whose voices can often go unheard - back at the heart of the child protection system. I spoke recently at the National Children and Adult Services conference, of my admiration for the workers do at the frontline of protecting vulnerable children and young people. It s vital that every social worker is equipped with the necessary skills and recent announcement which introduces a clear career pathway with three assessed and accredited levels, will allow social workers to move up to senior leadership roles while retaining their focus on frontline practice. We need a children s social work profession that attracts and retains the very highest calibre individuals and gives them the training and support they need. I have been clear about my support for strong teaching partnership arrangements between employers and universities as the key driver of improving the way we educate, and develop our social workers. I m pleased that Isabelle Trowler, the Chief Social Worker for Children and Families, is leading this important work working closely with Lyn Romeo, Chief Social Worker for Adults. These awards are vital in recognising and rewarding the outstanding practice and practitioners that I know are working so hard all over the country. My warmest congratulations to all of the nominees and winners. Rt Hon Nicky Morgan, Member of Parliament Secretary of State for Education Isabelle Trowler I am delighted to have had the opportunity to be part of Awards. The work that social workers do is immensely complex and challenging and it is vital that we celebrate the inspirational work that takes place. As a profession, we must provide exceptional levels of skill and support as demonstrated by tonight s nominees. We must continually strive to develop and improve, to earn the by properly supporting social workers to do the job that society needs them to do. Recognising and celebrating the exceptional work that social workers undertake day in, day out to support the country s most vulnerable children is crucial. These awards are a great opportunity to recognise the commitment and talent of some of the most inspiring individuals from across the social work profession Isabelle Trowler Chief Social Worker for Children and Families 6

Norman Lamb I am delighted to see so many applications to the Social working with adults this year. It marks the progress that has been made in recognising the vital role that social workers play in working alongside people and their carers to achieve the best possible outcomes. Social workers have the potential to make a fantastic contribution to the transformation of health and social care, and to ensuring that all the other universal support that contributes to improving people s wellbeing is in other resources to support people, often makes the key difference in reducing their need for more formal support and enables them to stay connected to their communities and neighbourhoods. That is one of the unique and brilliant aspects of social work you work with individuals and communities, building on their gifts and strengths, to ensure they can be part of communities and live their lives in ways which matter to them. The implementation of the Care Act, centred on the principles of wellbeing and prevention, is built on social work values and practices and as social workers, you have a pivotal role to play in helping lead these changes. and families in meeting some of life s biggest challenges and in safeguarding their rights, building relationships to support and empower them to make important choices about their lives. These awards are continuing to support and recognise good and outstanding social work practice by employers and peers, and to tell the story about the critical role that social workers play every day in communities across the country. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Norman Lamb, Member of Parliament Minister of State for Care and Support Lyn Romeo I am delighted to have been involved again in the Reading the entries for the Adult Social Worker of the Health Social Worker categories, I can say that I was truly humbled and inspired to read about the passion, you consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. These awards are a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding practice that social workers up and down the country are carrying out on a daily basis. Social workers are not used to talking about the great work that they do, but we must all realise the importance of giving practitioners the recognition they deserve. The social work profession needs to throw new light on the professional and dedicated work you do in the face of enormous pressures and demands.the Social Worker the profession by highlighting the best examples of the courageous work which goes on. I applaud you all. C truly inspirational. Lyn Romeo Chief Social Worker for Adults 7

Sanctuary Social Care This time of year inspires me more than any other. After some poor Ofsted reports and some negative press optimism to read the amazing stories from practitioners, managers and directors who have taken the time to enter Once again, every single entry demonstrated the exceptional lengths that so many practitioners are prepared to go to. It is a tremendous achievement to be to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you for your successes this evening. At Sanctuary Social Care, we believe that all social workers should be recognised for their hard work and devotion and it is for this reason that we became involved in these awards. We want to improve national pride in the social work sector and I m sure you ll all agree that these awards are playing a big part in raising public awareness and understanding of the positive work undertaken by social work practitioners. It is the easiest thing in the world to criticise the social work sector. We have all read numerous media stories which have attributed blame towards individuals, or and new innovative ways of working. This is what is so inspiring about all of our nominees this year. Every single one is making a real difference to both their service users and the wider profession. T positive impact and helping to change the profession for the better. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you enjoy the evening as much as we will. James Rook Managing Director, Sanctuary Social Care 9

SPONSOR S WELCOME British Association of Social Workers Social work is about forming, keeping and breaking relationships endlessly. This is with the public, with related colleagues and with our work mates. These are not neutral acts. Some will be positive acts relationships which enrich our existence and that of the other person or people involved. But the reality of our work is that many will be neutral or even negative relationships, which may demand a lot of work from us to keep them going. This can be very demanding, especially where the situation is potentially aggressive or violent. However, as social workers, we are equipped to help people look at their options and explore different ways of meeting their needs. We are good at understanding how communities are operating and how they can be better places for the people who live in them. The questions raised by social workers today are: How do we have honest discussions about our work and our profession? Where can we do this safely and constructively? How do we recognise and value where we do things differently and how can we learn from each other? For me, these awards not only celebrate the voice of social work, they offer the opportunity for dialogue and the freedom to review the relationships made with the people who have used services, and a safe space to share the common troubles, frustrations and joys that all accompany social work practice. So let s celebrate the success of the individuals who gain awards, and of the teams of social workers and colleagues with whom they work. Let s celebrate the new people coming into the profession, and recognise people who have made social work their career. Let s celebrate all those nominated for awards and all the winners. And thank you to all social workers for the job you do every day of the year. Bridget Robb Chief Executive, BASW 10

And 23 years later I am still excited by the prospect of being able to help people to change their lives. Abuse changes childhood. But so can we. Photography by Tom Hull. 15 SPONSOR S WELCOME impower We are delighted to be sponsoring the Social Worker impower exists to reform public services. We work to provide a platform for the best and brightest people to effect change. People like every one of you, who are here this evening. Having worked with some of the most challenging of social care departments over the last few years, we know how incredibly hard the environment is within which social workers have to operate. We ve witnessed case reviews and the ever present critical press can have on morale. Against all that, however, we ve also witnessed unshakeable commitment to do the right thing for the people who need you. The word inspirational is sometimes overused and can often sound trite, but when you have sat alongside social workers dealing with S47 cases or you see the extra mile that so many social workers go to get the right outcome for someone - then you know that it in that context, the word inspirational isn t used nearly often enough. These awards are about us taking the time to thank the people who do so much to help make our society work better. They are about recognising and celebrating the difference that social workers make to the lives of so many. We hope you have a wonderful evening. Amanda Kelly Executive Director, impower impower is pleased to sponsor the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2014
