WELCOME TO THE FREEDOM 5K Thank you for supporting Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge in our fight against addiction. This fall, hundreds of people from around the state will join together and show that freedom from addiction starts here. Individuals, teams, churches, schools, and corporations can help make this event a success. People from all walks of life are welcome. Your time and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated! Ways to be involved 1. Form a team! Ask others to join you it s more fun to participate with friends, family and co-workers. 2. Ask your employer to get involved by officially forming a corporate team, matching funds, or sponsoring the event. 3. Tell your church congregation about the Freedom 5K and invite others to join you. 4. Have fun! Bring the whole family and help us give hope to those who need it most. Participants can look forward to a day filled with entertainment, food, door prizes, and so much more all with the goal of helping others break free from addiction. RUN/WALK WITH THEM IN MIND Almost everyone has someone in their life who is struggling with chemical dependency. It ravages families, it destroys lives and despite all we know about how dangerous and damaging it is the problem continues to grow. With this event, many of us are standing up for the people we love and running or walking with them in mind. For more than 30 years, we ve been restoring hope to teens and adults struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. We offer a variety of effective and affordable programs with campuses in Minneapolis, Brainerd, Duluth, Rochester, and Buffalo, Minnesota. We have shorter-term and long-term programs; prevention and aftercare. These distinct offerings allow us to effectively serve individuals with a broad spectrum of addiction issues; from those seeking treatment for the first time, to those who have been struggling with addiction for many years. The Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge model truly enables program participants to experience hope, healing, and freedom in their lives. 2.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS Participate as a Team: Coming together Allows you to set a team goal of $1,500, or try to beat our recommended goal of $150 per person. Provides a fun-filled day at Saint Paul s Harriet Island with friends. Motivates everyone to raise more money to fight addiction. Participate as an Individual: Making it Personal Set a personal goal to beat the recommended target of $150. Raise Funds! If you haven t done it already, set up your personal fundraising web page. We ll even show you how. Once your team or individual web page is set up, there are tons of other ideas included in this guidebook to help you reach your personal fundraising goal. Visit our web site at or call for more information. Fundraise a little or a lot... it makes a HUGE difference! 3.

PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING PERSONAL FUNDRAISING MnTC is excited to partner with TeamRaiser, an online peer-to-peer fundraising system, which will help participants meet (and even surpass) their fundraising goals! Set up your personal fundraising page at givehope.mntc.org/freedom5k. 1. Online Send an to your friends and family asking them to donate to your webpage: they can also forward onto others. 2. Friends & Family Collect cash and checks from friends and family members and place them in the fund collection envelopes that are provided for you. 3. Business Sponsors Ask businesses you frequent to sponsor you. 4. Match Check with your HR department at your work to see if they will match your contributions. Many companies do! 5. Social Media Outreach Be sure to click on one of the icons provided for Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to post your personal fundraising webpage to your social media account. 6. Letter to your company s vendors They receive your business and are often very willing to help out their customers. All donations are tax-deductible. GROUP FUNDRAISING The following events and activities are ideas to help you raise additional funds. Schools, companies, and churches of all sizes can coordinate activities that encourage involvement. SCHOOL Talk with your teacher or principal about these ideas: Book Drive Ask students/parents to donate unused books and hold a book sale. Penny Drive Place a large empty jar by each class in your school/grade level; the class that has the most pennies wins (have ice cream donated as a prize). Car Wash Invite all parents to drive through a school-run car wash in the parking lot. WORK Get approval from your supervisor for the following fun ideas: Chili Cook-Off Charge $10 contest entry fee for the cooks and $5 per person to eat; award a vacation day to the best chef. Piggy Bank Keep an empty jar at your desk and ask for all loose change. Candy Sales Buy bulk candy, keep a bowl on your desk and ask for donations from people who take candy. Jeans Day People pay $5 per day to wear jeans to work on regular non-jeans days. CHURCH Discuss these great ideas with your pastor or church leaders: Bake Sales Organize a bake sale at church and ask everyone to contribute treats. Rummage Sale Invite everyone to donate their garage sale items and hold a mass sale. Recipe Book Have everyone donate their favorite recipe on the same 3x5 sized card; photocopy them all into a book; make multiple copies and offer it for sale. Potluck Dinner Ask everyone on your team to provide a potluck item and charge a minimal fee to attend. Pancake Breakfast Host a breakfast before or after services and charge a minimal fee to attend. 4.

WHY WE LOVE TEAM CAPTAINS Thank you for participating in our Freedom 5K and for your willingness to lead. The success of this walk lies in the hands of team leaders who dedicate their time and imagination creating excitement for this event. According to experts, teams raise 4x more than individuals. Your team has an important role to play in helping Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge s Freedom 5K. But, with leaders like you and the right tools, this goal will be as easy as a walk in the park. As a team captain, your role is to: Recruit and inspire your teammates Establish timelines and set goals Delegate tasks and responsibilities to team members Track team fundraising to stay on task Communicate often to keep your team motivated Turn in team funds on run/walk day and have fun! Now that you re a Team Captain let s get started! WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? 1. Recruit! Ask friends, family, church family, fellow students, youth group members, and co-workers to join your team. An average team has 10 members, but there s no limit to how many team members you can have so don t hold back! 2. Raise Funds! Set a team fundraising goal. You can use our preset goal of $150 dollars per person, or go the extra mile and make your own goals. Assist your teammates in signing up online and joining your online fundraising page. Encourage your team members to fundraise. There are online options as well as fun group activities listed in the Putting the FUN in Fundraising section of this guidebook. Communicate often with your teammates. Keep everyone informed of the team s fundraising progress and make sure everyone is on track with your team timelines and goals. Make sure you let us know all the creative ways your team is raising funds. We want to share your success stories with all the other team captains. 3. Rally the Troops! Collect all funds raised from your teammates in your team captain envelope and either mail in the total amount before the event or bring it to registration on walk day. Your team should hand in all their funds at once. Set a meeting place for your team members on event day and make sure that everyone checked in at registration. 11.

YOUTH TEAMS Serving as a team captain and rallying your fellow students, club mates, youth group members, and friends around the cause of drug prevention and recovery is an important job and a great leadership experience. Here are some examples of youth teams you can recruit. School Teams Ask your friends, teachers, and school administrators to run/walk with you at the Freedom 5K. First get approval from your school administration, and then use the school section of the fundraising ideas in this guidebook to organize fundraising events on campus. Create extra excitement by challenging classrooms to see which class can raise more funds. Club Teams If you belong to boy scouts, girl scouts, athletic teams, or any other social groups, consider organizing a youth club team to run/walk. You can plan to wear your club uniform to the Freedom 5K so everyone can see that your organization raised support for Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge! Church Youth Groups Do you belong to a youth group at your church? If so, invite them to form a walk team and fundraise. Talk to your Pastor for approval, and then use the church section of the fundraising ideas in this guidebook to organize fundraising events at your church. Know the Truth Schools may choose to raise money for our non-religious prevention program for teens, Know the Truth (KTT). KTT works with our communities to help prevent teenage substance abuse by sharing personal stories about the struggles with addiction and by presenting students with information about the dangers of alcohol and drug use. 12.
