Many services have closed entirely and others operate on a shoestring. We see more people than ever coming to us in crisis with very few community resources available to them. In addition, many have complex needs because of missed opportunities of early intervention. We are dedicated to making every contact with a service user really count. To do so, we developed the Hestia Approach to help our staff to make the most effective interventions and deliver services shaped by the specific needs of the people we support. The Hestia Approach is based on the principles of co-production and recovery, focussing on the strengths, skills and aspirations of the people who use our services. Already, our service delivery has seen significant innovation and development, which are shaped by the insights of the people we work with and for. The last year has brought us some of our most exciting new services yet. Our first Recovery Café opened in Tooting in April It has already provided out of hours support for over 250 people experiencing a mental health crisis who have nowhere else to turn. This year, we also opened two new safe houses - providing safety, security and recovery to victims of modern slavery. This brings our total number of safe houses to five across London and the South East. We conducted in-depth research regarding the experiences of our survivors; the outcomes have enabled us to develop innovative services shaped by the specific needs of our service users. Our UK SAYS NO MORE campaign celebrated its first birthday in May 2017 with a week of events for our staff, supporters and service users. The campaign has already had a phenomenal impact, bringing together 100 sector and corporate partners and over 6,000 members of the public to raise awareness and bring an end to domestic violence and sexual assault. Our innovative mobile app, Bright Sky, has been used over 5,100 times in its first year. As well as enabling users to access information on local domestic abuse support services, the app provides a secure journal function and links to further resources around consent, harassment and stalking. Version two of Bright Sky is being launched in late We are delighted to be named the charity partner of international law firm, and longstanding supporter, Hogan Lovells. As their charity partner they will raise vital funds for us and we look forward to continuing our work together. We face the approaching year with determination. Despite the economic and political uncertainties our sector faces we will continue to be ambitious on behalf of the people we support. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners and supporters to make sure that next year we will be there for even more adults and children in crisis. 4 Modern Slavery 713 adult victims of modern slavery supported Hestia has supported survivors of modern slavery since Today we are the largest provider of accommodation and outreach support to victims of modern slavery across London and the Southeast. In 2016/17 Hestia s team of specialist advocates supported 713 adult victims of modern slavery, 57 of whom were accommodated in our safe houses. In addition, 311 children were supported across our safe houses and outreach support provision. In 2016 the UK Government identified approximately 3,800 victims of modern slavery, with the number of victims across the UK rising each year. Our work on the ground reflects this rise. In 2016/17 the number of individuals we supported was 58% higher than the previous year. Working in partnership with the Salvation Army and external partners (including solicitors, counsellors and government agencies) our Modern Slavery Response Team supports people who have survived unimaginable traumas. Deceived by their traffckers, the majority of the people we support have been trapped in a life of sexual exploitation, forced labour or domestic servitude. Working in partnership with victims, our team of advocates provide the emotional and practical support needed to rebuild their lives. For survivors of modern slavery, language is often a huge barrier to being heard and gaining independence. To address this, and responding to requests from service users, Hestia s team has developed inhouse English courses. Running once a week, English classes instil confidence in the service users who attend and help to develop their relationship with staff away from daily interactions. A training element means that, after several weeks of classes, service users become facilitators of the classes supporting new starters and encouraging other service users to attend. To respond to the growing challenge, Hestia is developing the Phoenix Project. Planned for launch next year, it will bring together hundreds of volunteers to support the longterm recovery of victims of modern slavery, and enable them to rebuild their lives. Evie s story It was customary in my town in Albania to have an arranged marriage. Although I wanted to make my parents happy, I couldn t go through with the wedding. Not only because he was a stranger but I already had a boyfriend, Markus, and we were in love. As the wedding approached, we had no other choice but to run away. I packed a bag and we travelled to Kosovo where he had friends we could stay with. Unfortunately, as soon as we arrived everything changed. The man I loved, who made me feel safe and who I trusted, betrayed me. For eight months they kept me locked up and I was repeatedly raped by up to ten men every day (including him ). I was constantly petrified and they d threatened to kill me and my family if I tried to leave. It was only on the day I escaped that I found out I was in England. The first days were a blur but soon I was referred to Hestia and met Meena my advocate. At the beginning, I was terrified of everything. Going to the doctors, speaking to my solicitor, even going to the shops. I couldn t trust anybody. Meena was my lifesaver. She was with me every step of the way, encouraging me and telling me I could do it. Slowly with Meena s support I felt myself coming back. One of the first things I did was learn English. Twelve months after joining Hestia I had reached Level 2 of my English class and was attending college to continue my studies in social care. Meena also arranged for me to have counselling. I still suffer from panic attacks, anxiety and depression but it s slowly getting better. 5 6

Domestic Abuse 3,657 people supported to recover from the trauma of abuse As London s largest provider of domestic abuse refuge services, last year Hestia supported 719 women and 668 children in our 29 refuges across 11 London boroughs. Across our network of refuges we are able to provide a place of safety to women and children who are made homeless by domestic abuse. We also offer emotional and practical support and ensure that every service user has an up-to-date risk assessment and support plan tailored to their needs. either directly through their own experience or indirectly by witnessing violence. For many women this is the tipping point at which they seek help. At Hestia we are committed to providing a Children and Family worker in every refuge to support the specific needs of these children. In addition to our refuge services, our Independent Domestic Violence Advocates, Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conferences and floating support teams supported almost 2,300 people living in the community who are at high risk of violence and abuse. Across the UK almost one million children are affected by domestic abuse every year, During school summer holidays, Hestia runs a six-week Summer Play Scheme providing activities and outings for mothers and their children across our refuges. Funded through generous donations from the public, the Summer Play Scheme provides the mums and children with a safe and supported space to reconnect and create new happy memories. Amanda s story I was in my mid-twenties when I met Tim. He seemed so different from other men in my past. Finally I had met someone kind and caring. Unfortunately, this did not last and the violence began. Tim would spit in my face and kick me. He even beat me up for having a miscarriage. The worst was to come though. I had left him and had returned to collect my belongings. I chose a time when he would be out at work, but he was there, waiting for me. He pushed me to the floor, stripped me naked, put a gun to my head and forced me to crawl on my hands and knees like a dog. I was 7-and-a-half months pregnant. I finally left Tim in Broken is not a word I ever use for people, but that is how I felt when I first met Jackie, my support worker at Hestia. I had severe depression and zero self-worth. I would be lying if I said it was easy. Tim has sent me threats from prison and it has taken a long time with therapy, lawyers and the police but with Jackie s support I am so much stronger and more confident within myself now. After a couple of months, Jackie encouraged me to volunteer at Hestia and consequently I attended workshops to train as a group facilitator. I have always wanted to use my experience to support other women going through abuse. Attending the training kickstarted my motivation and soon my peer support programme dream will become a reality. 7 8

Bright Sky Launched in May 2016, UK SAYS NO MORE is Hestia s national campaign to raise awareness to end domestic violence and sexual assault in the UK. Powered by events, communications and partnerships the campaign brings together individuals, agencies, organisations and corporates alike to raise awareness and put an end to domestic violence and sexual assault. The campaign is a partnership between London-based charity Hestia and NO MORE in the United States. Our year in numbers: 70,000+ page views on uksaysnomore.org 300+ public pledges Going forward 200,000 impressions on Twitter each month on average 32 presentations given in sector events, seminars, forums and to local authority strategic planning groups Over the next two years we will develop our vision of creating the UK s largest partnership network for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, creating the first dedicated multi-media channel and rolling out our University Ambassador programme across England and Wales. 77,000 views and social media impressions of our celebrity No More Excuses video campaign 100 campaign partners 200 young men and boys attended Ambassador Training Taking part in the Hestia and NFL Peer Ambassador programme I have been able help educate around 200 young men and women about domestic abuse. The younger participants in the camp came forward after the sessions and thanked us for the talk saying that they hadn t really thought about the topic. This really struck home, such a huge topic that is poorly understood by most and hasn t even entered the mind of young teenagers. How will society change if we do not educate the generations to come about topics that truly matter? Peer Ambassador Bright Sky is a free app providing support and information for anyone who may be in an abusive relationship, or for those concerned about someone they know. The app was developed In partnership with Aspirant Consultants. Since its launch in 2016, Bright Sky has been used just under 7,000 times to locate and contact support services across the UK, identify potential abuse in a relationship and log incidents of domestic abuse. In autumn 2017, Hestia is launching the second development of the app, in partnership with the Vodafone Foundation. This new development expands on the content within the app to cover issues such as sexual consent, stalking, harassment and online safety while also making the app available in 3 languages in addition to English Punjabi, Urdu and Polish. The app features: A unique UK-wide directory of specialist domestic abuse support services across the UK, allowing users to locate their closest support using GPS. A secure My Journal tool, where incidents of abuse can be logged in text, audio, video or photo form. This can help users provide evidence in a court of law. Questionnaires to assess the safety of a relationship. Information for anyone wishing to learn more about domestic abuse. Contact details and the ability to call national helplines providing support for those affected by domestic and sexual abuse across the UK. Links to further resources and information on topics around domestic abuse, sexual consent, harassment and stalking. 9 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram today 10

Mental Health & Complex Needs 2,419 people supported across our mental health services At Hestia, we work with and support people who have a wide range of mental health conditions and experiences. Working across 10 boroughs, we run 33 mental health services including registered care homes, supported accommodation, day centres, befriending projects, community floating support and our new Recovery Cafés. Launched in April 2017, the Hestia Recovery Café is an innovative new service for people living in south west London who are experiencing a mental health crisis. With 1 in 4 people living with undiagnosed mental health conditions, the Recovery Café works with individuals to reduce their immediate anxiety and make practical plans to help them receive support for their mental health. In response to the Grenfell fire disaster, we opened a further Recovery Café later in the year to support individuals and families affected by the tragedy. Our experience of providing support has informed the basis of the Hestia Approach. This prioritises recovery and co-production as the foundation of operational delivery and is now used across the organisation, with a particular focus on group work and peer support. We have witnessed an incredible uptake of this approach particularly across our mental health services with people taking central roles in the design and delivery of their own services. Alongside traditional mental health services, we have expanded our provision of support for people with complex needs. This includes people with mental health conditions who are also struggling with substance misuse or homelessness and/or have a history of offending. Last year we supported 922 individuals with secondary mental health needs (across our non-mental health specific services). To ensure a holistic recovery, our teams work with specialist external agencies within an environment where service users shape their own recovery, based on individual needs. Ade s story When I first came to Hestia the doctor had told me I was schizophrenic. I needed a lot of looking after as I used to hear voices and felt dizzy and drowsy which made me think a lot and too fast. I also used to drink too much alcohol. I have been living here for 8 years now and my work with the team has made me very happy. I am currently running the Garden Beautification Project and help run Gardening Groups as well as trying to get other residents involved. I also run the Relaxation & Meditation group on my own I used to do it with staff or volunteers but I now feel confident to lead the group on my own. This is my home so it is important I am involved in making it better. I do some of the health and safety checks with staff, like the fire alarm. Sometimes I do shopping that is needed for the house and I help keep the house tidy. I am also the DJ for all the parties and I tell other residents about things in the local community like the Day Centre and Adult Education Centre. Working in the garden and cleaning keeps my mind busy and my body moving. Now I don t just want to rest and sleep all the time. Being active has stopped me from hearing voices or having headaches and it has improved my speech. In the future I want to be able to run more groups on my own. I hope when other service users see me doing this, it will encourage them to join in and hopefully encourage them to run their own groups one day

Innovative Support: Hestia in Partnership with the NHS At Hestia we strive to respond to the changing needs of our service users as well as to the needs of the wider sector. This year we launched several exciting new services in partnership with local NHS Trusts which have been commissioned to provide more integrated approaches between health and social care. Hestia s integrated health and social care based services prioritise health and wellbeing at a local level, enabling people to live safely at home for as long as possible. This service model enables us to deliver holistic outcomes and reimagine the way in which we deliver services to promote wellbeing and self-management. In 2016/17, in partnership with local NHS Trusts, CCGs and social services we supported people to manage their health in the community. Some highlights from the year include: The Ealing Community Discharge Service: Our staff supported 82 older people to return from hospital and regain their independence in their own homes. Hestia s Hospital Discharge House: In Hounslow, we supported 33 people who were homeless or had mental health needs to leave hospital safely and move in to our short-term accommodation. The support we provide at this service enables people to have a safe space to recover and self-manage. In our Intermediate Care Network for Homeless Health (ICN) we supported people, who were once rough sleeping, to be discharged from hospital in to temporary accommodation. We supported all of those referred individuals to put in place a plan for their life off the streets and supported them to access primary care services or step-down from hospital treatment. Delivered in partnership with Ashford Place, our Brent CCG service supported 46 service users with mental health needs to build their confidence, volunteer and work towards employment. Service users in Hestia s domestic abuse refuges across three boroughs have piloted the Hestia Health Passport. This is an innovative new resource created in partnership with Public Health England s Team Up initiative. The Health Passport enables service users to record their health information in one accessible file offering huge benefits to those who have to move frequently between boroughs and services. The Health Passport is being launched across our services in late Mill Place provided supported accommodation for 14 adults with mental health conditions. Service users are supported to gain independence, build confidence and learn the skills required to live independently in the community. Our innovative new Recovery Café in Wandsworth is funded by South West London & St Georges NHS Mental Health Trust. The service has provided a safe space and out-ofhours support for 254 individuals in crisis since it opened in April Lucerne s story Lucerne used our services in Brent which support people with mental health needs. She always found it hard to communicate. In her early sessions with our team, she would avoid eye contact and give very limited responses. After a couple of weeks, Lucerne began to open up to her key worker, Kaye and in one of their conversations she mentioned that she likes to play computer games. Talking about personal interests was key for Lucerne. Her trust in Kaye quickly developed and soon she began to take part in more activities and felt more comfortable meeting in different locations. In a few short weeks, Lucerne was visibly more relaxed and began to talk openly about her isolation and how her current medication was making her feel, two topics she previously refused to discuss. Kaye, Lucerne s key worker: It was like we switched a light on! All of a sudden Lucerne became animated and was happy to sit and talk for large chunks of time about her favourite games. In doing so, she began to trust me more, telling me about her life and projects she was working on. After we broke the seal of communication she went from strength to strength, leaving the house more and talking about getting involved in group activities. Despite ups and downs in Lucerne s medication we continued to focus on her positive attributes, helping her see past her illness and recognise how far she had come. There is one day that I ll never forget. Lucerne s medication had recently been changed which had left her feeling anxious and noncommunicative and caused her to cut our last meeting short. I was worried about how Lucerne would be when we next met as she had previously been disheartened by set-backs. However I needn t have worried! Bubbling with laughter Lucerne surprised me with the information that she had not only applied to Open University, but written a personal statement and applied for student finance, all in the space of a week between our meetings. When I think back to the timid and fearful person I first met, I am overjoyed for Lucerne and her accomplishments. We are meeting in new locations each week, extending her repertoire of destinations and she continues to surprise me with jokes and humour as she navigates her way through university
