Five Suggested priority areas Residents are safe & feel safe Feel Safe, Be Safe This is your community. Yes, You. Now make it safe. Make it yours. My City, Your City, Our City Committed to creating a confident, safe community! Change Crime Prevention Council to Community Safety Council more positive, strength based approach Following an introduction by the Crime Prevention Council Coordinator, there was a suggestion to move forward with the planning around five priority areas. These areas are based on priorities identified by audit process. 1. Children and Youth 2. Addictions and Mental Health 3. Communications & Education 4. Strong Neighbourhoods 5. Northern Communities and Urban Aboriginals It was the consensus of the group to make the following changes: Add Families, Seniors and Diversity to Children and Youth for table discussion Plan a future process for discussion of pillar five to support broader participation from Aboriginal representatives of the Crime Prevention Council Participants self selected into groups and had a general discussion regarding the following questions: 1. CHILDREN AND YOUTH, FAMILIES, SENIORS AND DIVERSITY Q: How can the work of the CPC support existing youth plans & strategies? Q: Which gaps in service can the CPC own or provide leadership for implementation? Q: Are there other actions that emerge as priorities from the perspective of the CPC? 2. ADDICTIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH Q: How can the work of the Crime Prevention Council support the actions contained in the Drug Strategy? Q: Which actions in the Drug Strategy can the Crime Prevention Council own or provide leadership for implementation? Q: Are there actions that emerge as priorities from the perspective of the Crime

4 Prevention Council? Q: How can we build on and/or support the evidence based and wellresearched actions and recommendations contained in both the Select Committee on mental Health Addictions Report and the Ministry of Health Every Door is the Right Door reports? 3. COMMUNICATIONS & EDUCATION Q: How do we communicate to the public what the Crime Prevention advocacy plan is? Q: How do we work toward educating the public on the root causes of crime & the effectiveness of crime prevention policies in reducing crime & victimization? Q: How do we sincerely engage our community to generate their ideas, input & feedback? 4. STRONG NEIGHBOURHOODS Q: What is a strong neighbourhood? Q: What tools can the CPC use & build on to make neighbourhoods stronger? Q: How do we ensure a diversity of voices is heard? 4. What Results Are We Striving For? What are the key areas of focus? What actions emerge as priorities? 1. CHILDREN AND YOUTH, FAMILIES, SENIORS AND DIVERSITY Education & Awareness engage public, use social media, workshops, etc. Community Mobilization/Partnerships & Collaboration partner with community agencies, school boards, create Crime Prevention Charter Best Practice Studies investigate & create 2. ADDICTIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH Education: public, professional, youth It s About Us include us (e.g., offender/victim surveys) Restorative Justice: advocate for changes to policies/practices Scan/Inventory of Programs & Incentives in Community Support Strategy of Think Tank 3. COMMUNICATIONS & EDUCATION Communications Strategy borrow other strategies that will work in our community Communications Tools Social media, FaceBook, Twitter, youthoriented Ambassadors with a consistent message Feedback surveys Community Dialogue videos, movies, learning café Media, Editorials, Board Meetings 4.
