3 WINSHIP COMMUNITY OUTREACH As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Georgia, the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University is committed to being a resource for the South East in cancer treatment, education, and prevention. As part of Winship s efforts to educate the community on wellness, healthy living, and lowering cancer risk, Winship engages in multiple community outreach initiatives and partners with nonprofits, faith-based organizations, city and state offices, corporates, and community agencies. COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT 2016 A Steering Committee of Emory Healthcare (EHC) Integrated Network Cancer Program representatives from across EHC provided guidance and input during the development of the community health needs assessments. Input from stakeholders representing the broad interest of the community was obtained through interviews. Interviews with seventeen organizations and one focus group were conducted with representatives from organizations. Using the qualitative data and input from community stakeholders, the 3 priority health needs of the overall communities served by EHC were identified by the Steering Committee as noted below Improve access to care in the community and collaborate with community partners to lessen the barriers to obtaining care including the shortage of health professionals, costs of care to the patient, transportation, insurance, health disparities, and other factors. Expand community awareness of healthy behaviors and available resources/care settings through education and community based programs. Increase the focus on preventative care and disease management for chronic conditions in the community to reduce health disparities and improve the health of the community. Page 2
