INTRODUCTION Welcome from the Director Welcome to the annual Barnardo s Cymru review of our services in Wales. These are exciting times with a significant move to the new Social Services and Well-being Act during the year, we wanted to provide you with a flavour throughout this report of the work we have undertaken in line with each of the new Well-being Statements. Believing in children means that we will fight to have their needs met and their voices heard. Whether we are providing direct support to children, young people and families, or speaking up on their behalf to influence public and political opinion, we are determined to transform the lives of the most vulnerable children, young people and their families in Wales. As we approach our 150th anniversary, we would like to show you how our services continue to evolve, how we are responding to the needs of today s children, young people and their families and how the support we are giving helps turn lives around. I would like to thank all our staff, volunteers and carers, who enable Barnardo s Cymru to achieve the positive outcomes that are demonstrated in this report. Of course, none of these achievements would be possible without the continued support of our donors, fundraisers and commissioning partners across Wales. Thank you all for continuing to believe in children. A view from the Chair Agile that s the word I d use to describe Barnardo s Cymru this year. We ve managed to reach young people in hidden places children at risk of sexual exploitation for instance where the deceit of perpetrators might make those children tricky to find. Yvonne Rodgers Director Barnardo s Cymru Eleanor Williams Barnardo s Trustee and Chair of Cymru National Committee But no matter how small the space, how faint the voice, Barnardo s Cymru gets alongside those children. We ve managed to reach young people in frightening places children affected by parental imprisonment for instance where fragile family structures can crack under the pressure of having a dad in jail. But no matter how many security checks there are to go through, how the cry for help may be masked by bravado, Barnardo s Cymru gets alongside those children. And then helps. Not always in a routine way, but always in a responsive, transformational, agile way. We ve been doing agile for a long time. After all, in 1886, Thomas Barnardo had to shin up a drainpipe, guided by a destitute boy, Jim Jarvis, to see a lay of eleven boys sleeping rough on a roof. This feat of climbing marked the start of Barnardo s work and of our agility as an organisation. How do we do this in a tough economic climate? Well, Barnardo s Cymru has kept developing during this past year. Developing new ways of helping and finding new ways that we can reach more of the most vulnerable families across Wales, despite the difficult financial climate. See what I mean by agile? 7

WHO WE WORKED WITH IN Meeting the needs of our vulnerable families and undertaking commissioned work is continually evolving in Wales. With the support of an active Business Development Unit, we work with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged families to deliver the support they value. During , services across Barnardo s Cymru provided direct support to over 8,100 children, young people and their families. The breadth of our work across Wales enabled us to provide less intensive support to over an additional 16,000 children, young people and families through support in communities and schools. We are constantly seeking to expand our support into new areas. During the year, we started to research and next year will be piloting support for families in the Newport area affected by domestic abuse, in partnership with Professor Gordon Harold. 13 OUR CONTRIBUTION TO WELL-BEING ACROSS WALES The next few pages outline real life stories that demonstrate the difference we make to the well-being of children, young people and families across Wales. Some of the names and images have been changed to protect the identity of those individuals concerned, but all are based on real life experiences. For an overview of what services we provide please refer to the Contact us section on page 23. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING Cadarn Services cases in profile Cadarn Bounce Back Rosie s Story Bounce Back is an active listening service currently operating in three High Schools in Cardiff aimed at young people in Year 10 and 11 who are at risk of disengaging from education, training and employment opportunities and not reaching their full potential. Pupils are offered one to one weekly intervention sessions focused on finding solutions to issues, developing their strengths and promoting their emotional resilience. Rosie explains: I was being bullied in school, had low confidence and found it difficult to build relationships with people. I was referred to Bounce Back when I was in Year 10, initially on a weekly basis which then developed to fortnightly sessions. In these sessions I would talk about my concerns and how I was feeling. My Project Workers would inform the school if I was being bullied and offer emotional support and help me solve some of the situations. I was able through these 1:1 sessions to trust other people, build up better communication skills and increase my selfawareness. From being initially shy, upset and angry I was now self-confident and determined to succeed in my studies. I particularly enjoyed the group activities that Bounce Back arranged and attended circus skills, picnics and bowling. I started with Bounce Back in 2013 and I wasn t sure of what it would be like. I felt they listened and it got me away from all the hassle of school. It s a break from everything. I got to release my mind, it was relaxing and I didn t feel like anyone was judging. I felt happy again. In all my time at Bounce Back, I feel like I have clarified my independence as a young adult, making my journey possible. I want to go to college and the project workers helped me towards that. Thank you!! Cadarn Free 2 Be Shakira s Story Shakira is a young asylum seeker who was living with her Mum and younger sister in shared accommodation in Cardiff. She had difficulties sleeping at night due to her anxieties, which meant her school attendance suffered. When she came to the Free 2 Be service they had moved home a number of times in the UK and within Cardiff due to their 13

seeking asylum as a family and being in temporary accommodation which offers no stability. Historically Mum had experienced domestic violence and lacked confidence when it came to socialising and getting to know people in the community. As a parent I was trying to get my daughter to share her feelings with I could support her more but she would hide her feelings so as not to burden me as she was aware I already had so much worry to deal with. Shakira and her sister were able to take part in a one off activity for girls of climbing in Boulders. This was a great introduction to the service as Shakira was more confident with her sister as company, but it also introduced her to other young girls in the area and they were able to socialise with each other and boost their confidence by pushing their own boundaries in a safe and controlled environment. The 1:1 sessions helped Shakira consider her anxieties around moving to new places and where she would like to be in the future. She created characters of children in which she could then talk about what their feelings would be in this situation and this was done using visual feelings cards as well as verbally talking through what she felt she wanted to share. Eventually, Shakira was able to talk about her situation from her own point of view rather than the characters and she was encouraged to recognise the support networks she has and who out of that network will still be there for her if they were to move again. In our final few sessions Shakira was able to comfortably talk about her family in Ghana, her feelings of being in Cardiff as well as what she would like to achieve in her future. A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. I was also supported by the service and attended a programme which focussed on self-awareness and self-esteem, positive discipline, empathy and appropriate expectations. My confidence grew over the sessions and I was now able to talk in front of the group and socialise with others during the breaks. I have now registered as a volunteer. I do appreciate Free 2 Be service it has helped my family a lot and I received a lot of love and care from the service. Thank you very much for being there for us when we needed you. A final celebration session took place with the whole family and this was a time for them to notice and be proud of how far they had come in terms of their personal journeys from the start of the intervention to this point, and also enjoy each other s company. 14

PROTECTION FROM ABUSE AND NEGLECT Taith Sexual Harmful Behaviour service Ryan s Story My mother told me to be honest about what happened, I didn t think I would be able to talk about it at all, but the worker at Taith had a way that just helped me to open up. Ryan was 15 years old when he was referred to the Taith Service because he had sexually touched his younger brother. Barnardo s undertook a thorough assessment with him and gave him the opportunity to discuss his own abuse experiences as well as the violence in his mother s past and current relationship. I guess at the time I didn t really understand what the problem was. Things like that had happened to me too and at the time I thought most kids knew about sex and that they were ok with what I was doing. Over the next few months I attended the Taith service every week. They helped me understand more about consent and the misuse of power in my behaviour. I felt very bad about what had happened. Undertaking the work at Taith was challenging, but it has helped me a lot. I know how to manage myself to avoid anything like this happening again and feel much more hopeful about my future. 15

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RECREATION Up2U Substance Misuse Service Josh s story Josh is fifteen years old and lives in the Vale of Glamorgan. He was referred to Up2U in March 2014 from a voluntary organisation in the Vale of Glamorgan. He disclosed that he was using up to 1 gram of cannabis daily, more at weekends. He had experimented with other drugs and drank alcohol at weekends. I had attempted to stop my cannabis use in the past but found this difficult as many of my friends were also using cannabis regularly. My worker and I explored what the triggers were for my cannabis use and we identified peer group, boredom and stress as the main triggers. We looked at ways in which I could better manage these triggers, including being assertive, going to the gym or exercising, and how to delay the decision to use cannabis and surf the urge. Together, we devised a cannabis reduction plan to stop my cannabis use by the end of July as I was going on holiday with family during the school break holiday. My goal was also ensuring that my alcohol use did not increase, improving my sleep patterns, and achieving B grades in physics and chemistry. Josh achieved this goal, and stopped using cannabis for a period. He contacted the service to report that he had enjoying the time he spent with his family whilst on holiday, which he felt was due to his not using cannabis. He has since self-referred himself back into Up2U but remains pleased that his cannabis use is now minimal and much more controlled and is committed to maintaining these limitations. He has recently obtained a weekend job working as waiter in a local restaurant. A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. 16

DOMESTIC, FAMILY AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Caerphilly Young Carers Service Connor s story It hadn t occurred to me that my upbringing had differed from the people around me. I had always wondered why I seemed to do more household chores and offer more emotional support to both my mother and my younger siblings, but I had just put this down to everyone having different circumstances. The impact of the caring I was doing was becoming detrimental to my own mental and physical well-being not to mention my school studies. I was struggling to sleep and felt depressed. I was getting in trouble for handing work in late or lacking attention in class. I was scared and knew that if teachers weren t aware of my home situation I d probably fail my exams and not get the support I needed. parent should be providing me with. I felt I could not talk to anyone about my problems because I was too busy fixing theirs. I realised I was not being treated badly at school because I was a bad person but because my circumstances were unknown. I was very popular at the groups, people seemed to find me easy to talk to and I often made them laugh. This really boosted my confidence. The support of sessions also allowed me to finally speak about my problems. I had bottled everything up for so long that it felt like I was finally laying down a huge weight that I had carried around for far too long. The initial assessment identified Connor as a very high level carer. supporting his mother emotionally and taking on a parenting role to his three younger siblings. He had been affected by parental substance misuse and domestic violence. When asked how the support from Barnardo s has helped him, Connor said: I knew that this would be a turning point for me. In meeting other people in similar situations I soon realised, I was not as alienated from the rest of people my age as I had begun to think. I had carried a lot of worries and stress to school with me every day and had experienced bullying and abuse from a large amount of people. I became incredibly insecure. I resented the fact that I had to provide all the support a A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. 17

CONTRIBUTION MADE TO SOCIETY Blaenau Gwent Community Connections Barnardo s Cymru Community Connections Service based in Ebbw Vale helps around 50 young people aged with learning disabilities to be independent, take part in social activities and reduces their isolation. The young people have built new confidence and made new friends outside of school through a variety of group activities and individual support. Young people now feel more able to make decisions in their lives and keep friendships that they may make. 15 year old Megan said: I am so glad I have joined Barnardo s because they helped me with my confidence. Jared 15, from Tredegar said: I have learnt a lot about independent living skills and personal safety and become a lot better at household chores at home! Before Barnardo s I would never dream about standing up and talking to an audience as I did today. Owain who has a diagnosis of autism has overcome his condition to become a valuable member of the team at his local cinema in Brynmawr. Owain said: I have learnt so much and I am thankful for the support I have received. Now I can look after myself and I believe I can be a role model for other young people who need help. I will encourage them and they will do it themselves. Many of the parents struggled to find something for the young people to do outside of family and school before the service started and were concerned about how their children were coping in their communities. What difference have we made? 19 SECURING RIGHTS AND ENTITLEMENTS Flintshire Young Carers Access to Action Jane s story Jane is aged 16 and attends the 6th form at Holywell High School. She hopes to go to University to study engineering. She has been involved with Barnardo s Flintshire Young Carers for four years. Jane became a member of the young carers forum, a group that have been lobbying decision makers in the area. Their campaign has led to the launch of the Access to Action (A2A) card. The Forum gave me a chance to put forward ideas and talk to other people about what we could do to help this situation. I feel I am able to influence in a positive way. Jane says: Getting in touch with Barnardo s changed everything for me. I had no idea that there were other children doing the same type of thing as me, there were even people in the same class as me in school yet none of us were mentioning it or discussing it. Meeting other young carers at Barnardo s opened my eyes and I was able to have courage to discuss my feelings for the first time and develop confidence in my special role. Barnardo s creates a secure environment where young carers can exchange views and take part in activities. We get involved in discussions on what we can do to make things better for young carers. A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. 19

SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC WELL-BEING Merthyr Financial Advice Worker Service Anne s story Anne, a single mother, was referred to the Financial Advice Worker (FAW) Service in Merthyr Tydfil by a friend and former service user, who was aware that she had some financial problems. There were many other issues in Anne s life as well as her financial problems, including mental health, domestic abuse and substance misuse. The family s home was cold and difficult to heat. Anne was assisted by the FAW to obtain a NEST grant to have a combi-boiler and central heating installed in her home. This reduced Anne s utility costs, made her home warmer and safer for her and her 18 month old child. As a result of the improvements to the home, her landlord agreed to waive the rent arrears she had previously accrued, removing the risk of eviction. The FAW and Anne discussed the options for dealing with her debts, and the FAW accompanied her to the local Citizens Advice Bureau and helped obtain A Debt Relief Order (DRO) This reduced Anne s outgoings, relieved stress and anxiety, and removed the risk of legal action. I was invited to a Service User Participation Event facilitated by Barnardo s, where I met with staff from Bridges Into Work. As a result, I enrolled and successfully completed a STEPS Course over the summer and attended a Hair and Beauty course at the local college, with the aim of becoming a mobile hairdresser. The FAW obtained funding from Barnardo s Young Persons Grants to help me buy the uniform and equipment required for the course, and they accompanied me to the college induction and first day. I have been there a term and enjoying it and I have increased my self-esteem and self-confidence as my abilities develop. My partner was prosecuted for domestic abuse and sentenced to six months imprisonment. As I had been claiming benefits jointly with him I relied on the service to help me through getting an income. When my partner was released from prison, our son was placed in Child In Need status, which meant that the MIA Key Worker was no longer able to remain involved with the family. A Social Worker was allocated, and the FAW liaised with them to establish responsibilities for different aspects of the family s needs. The family has successfully stepped down from Social Services involvement due to no on-going concerns for the child s wellbeing. They continue to receive support from DrugAid, Probation, Counselling and the Financial Advice Worker. A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. 20

SUITABILITY OF LIVING ACCOMMODATION BAYS Supported Lodgings Service Amy s story Amy was referred to supported lodgings after her foster placement broke down. She was often arguing with the foster carer about coming home on time and attending college. Amy was matched with a supported lodgings provider. Amy was very upset that she wasn t in regular contact with her siblings and family who lived in England. Her lodgings provider helped push for to have her transport paid for her to have regular family visits and her social worker ensured that she was able to have supervised contact with her younger siblings. Socially awkward when meeting new people and struggling in college, she was also linked in to student support in the college. Amy had assistance from her support worker to embark on a course at Swansea University and applied for part time work. She was now was in a position with her independent living skills to be put forward for her own accommodation in Swansea. A model has been used to protect the identity of this young person. 21

OUR SERVICES Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexually Harmful Behaviour Barnardo s work at SERAF and and Taith provides crucial support and intervention; they are two specialist services in Wales that support children who have either been sexually exploited or have demonstrated sexually harmful behaviour. SERAF aims to protect children and prevent them from being sexually exploited, and aid their recovery. Taith works with young people who have engaged in sexually harmful or abusive behaviour toward others. Over 2,800 children across the UK were identified as needing protection from sexual abuse last year 2. In Wales in alone there were 160 children on the child protection register due to sexual abuse 3. 1 in 20 children in the UK have been sexually abused and 1 in 3 abused by an adult did not tell anyone 4. Although any child can be in jeopardy, children who go missing from local authority care can be at greater risk of sexual exploitation. In 2011, 67% of missing incidences in Wales were attributable to children in care. 24 Care Leavers and Vulnerable Young People Support Services At the 31st March 2014 there were 5,755 children Looked After across Wales, a rise of over 1,000 from five years previously 5. Wales has the highest proportion of children in care of all nations in the UK, at 91 in every 10,000 children. Children are taken into care for many reasons; last year in Wales 58% of those entering the care system did so because they had been abused or neglected. Others come from families who are struggling to cope in difficult circumstances, financial or otherwise. Whatever the reason, these children are extremely vulnerable and this vulnerability often remains with them after they leave the care system. Just 11% of Care Leavers in Wales in 2014 achieved A*-C in at least 5 GCSEs. Our Care Leavers services support young people who would otherwise be isolated in their transition from the Care System to living independently. They provide mentoring support and guidance in particular assisting care leavers with drawing up individual action plans that reflect their goals and aspirations. A number of other support services sit alongside our care leaver services and are often working with the same or similar cohorts of vulnerable children and young people. They offer support around housing, education, employment, domestic violence and skills around transitioning to adulthood. 25 Early Interventions with Families In Wales, there are approximately 180,000 children under five. Over the coming decade, the population of 0-five year olds is projected to increase by approximately 70,000 in England and Wales. It is vital to provide support to the vulnerable parents and families of young children before they reach crisis point. With timely and effective support, we can help these children flourish and prevent costly and harmful consequences emerging in their later lives. These services provide a range of group and one to one support to parents and other significant adults, including nursery care, access to pre-school play provisions, as well as parental advice/guidance and programmes. 26 Young Carers With so many adult responsibilities, young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have to play and learn. Many struggle educationally and are often bullied for being different. They can become isolated, with no relief from the pressures at home, and no chance to enjoy a normal childhood. They are often afraid to ask for help as they fear letting the family down or being taken into care themselves. These children and young people take on the responsibility for a person who may be ill, dealing with a disability, elderly, experiencing mental distress, or affected by substance misuse. Our services in Wales provide young carers with opportunities away from their caring roles through group interactions, 1-1 support and helping families to access other necessary support. 27 Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment In the UK, there are an estimated 200,000 children who have a parent imprisoned. For children in Wales, the impact of having a parent in prison is increased significantly by virtue of distance, with long journeys, the cost of travelling for visits, and accessing Wales based services amongst the many challenges they face. Barnardo s has two specialist services to help vulnerable children who are affected by the imprisonment of a parent. We work in partnership with G4S where we deliver the community element of the Invisible Walls Wales service, based in Parc Prison, Bridgend. Our teams provide family focused and individual emotional and practical support. We are supporting children who are really struggling to come to terms with the drastic change of having a parent taken from their lives. 31 OUR POLICY, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK Influencing change The Policy and Research Unit works to support our services and to secure positive changes in legislation, policy and practice. Everything we do is aimed at securing the rights and promoting the well-being of our most vulnerable children and young people. LEAVING CARE Those young people who leave care with the greatest and most complex needs after traumatic childhoods often experience the hardest time entering young adulthood. Securing suitable accommodation is an ongoing challenge and it s difficult to succeed when you re at threat of homelessness. That s why Barnardo s has focussing on a strategy to improve the outcomes of our most vulnerable care leavers and in particular to secure better accommodation options for them. In Wales as part of UK action we have developed specialist supported lodgings placements to evidence what can be achieved when young people with complex needs have the right place home to live in. We ve been consulting with the young people our leaving care services support as part of work that is taking place to develop and further improve our services. We ve looked at the best practice from across the UK, we re giving additional training to our staff and we re listening to what young people say they need from our services. We also secured amendments to the Housing (Wales) Act to improve the safety net against homelessness for care leavers and other vulnerable young people. We re working with other children s charities to try and get the political parties to set out what they will do to make sure looked after children and care leavers enjoy good well-being outcomes. We re also working to influence guidance on care leavers under the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act. 31

CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION Child sexual exploitation is a priority area for influencing and practice for Barnardo s. In Wales we ve carried on working to safeguard children and young people at risk of child sexual exploitation (CSE) since we undertook the first research on the issue in Wales ten years ago. We have been sharing data and evidence with our partners in Safeguarding Children Boards and with the Police and Crime Commissioners and Police Authorities to support them in developing action plans to tackle CSE. We have also been contributing to the Children s Commissioner for Wales national stakeholder group on CSE and we ve continued to work with Welsh Government to support the implementation of the national guidance and protocol on CSE. Our service has also been working on an education resource on CSE for Welsh Government. We also campaigned on the need for the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act to support education and prevention to reduce the risks of CSE. This year we started two research projects, one looking at the link between children and young people who go missing and CSE in North Wales and one looking at the needs of boys and young men at risk of CSE across Wales. We supported our Seraf service to deliver two successful events where we shared film, art, photography and drama work that children in schools and children and young people who have been supported by the service have produced to support the prevention of CSE. The events were attended by the Deputy Minister and the Minister for Health and Social Services and the Children s Commissioner for Wales. They gave children and young people who are silenced through abuse the chance to speak out about what needs to change. 33 CHILDREN AFFECTED BY PARENTAL IMPRISONMENT Children who experience the imprisonment of a parent are among our most vulnerable children, with poor outcomes in mental health, education, poverty and risk of offending behaviour. We believe that they deserve the same chance as other children to enjoy their childhoods and to secure good wellbeing outcomes. So we launched a strategy to change things for the better for the children living hidden sentences across the UK. We ve produced and shared a free resource for family support services and for schools across Wales so that children can be better identified and supported. In Wales we got Assembly Members to agree to set up a Cross Party Group on the issue so that the needs of these children won t be hidden anymore. The Cross Party Group is chaired by Christine Chapman AM and will publish a report and recommendations to try and secure change. We ve also worked to influence the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act so that children can be identified and supported. Our services run a CAPI Talkback group with the help of volunteers so that children with a family member in prison can have their voices heard. In February children and young people from the group and from our Flintshire young carers service went to the Welsh Labour Party conference where they got to tell Ministers, politicians and policy makers what they want from a Welsh Government. 34 We take pride in investing in our staff and have been accredited for a number of years by the Institute of Leadership and Management to run the Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management for managers. We ensure all staff have a baseline knowledge through the delivery of mandatory modules such as Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Data Protection and more. Providing the right level of training and support is something we hold dear. 538 Staff worked for Barnardo s in Wales in Volunteers 8,440 hours of their time to work in our Services. 34

OUR PEOPLE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS Oli s Story Oli is a mentor at the Transitions service in Cardiff. Once a week, he mentors a young person experiencing mental health difficulties. The role of mentors is to give the young person a chance to integrate with society, develop their social skills, and create a safe environment where they can express their feelings about their particular mental health difficulties. In addition, Oli has also volunteered assisting project workers to run weekly groups including sessions on topics such as sex and healthy relationships, clay animation production and positive body image. I hope to make the young people feel welcome and involved and most importantly get them laughing, smiling and integrating says Oli. Oli originally volunteered looking for a change in career and chose Barnardo s after a recommendation from a family member. So what has Oli gained from volunteering? His response I have learnt a lot about different mental health difficulties, the services available to young people and the challenges these services face with limited resources and funding etc. I have gained invaluable experience working with people that I would not have otherwise met. Longer term, he hopes this invaluable experience will help him achieve paid employment in the mental health sector. disabled young person to cadets and take notes for him. Beth says The thing I like best is the sense of satisfaction after each session. It makes me feel good about myself as he would not be able to do the activities if I did not help him. I can always tell that his parents are grateful for my help. I think it is good because they can be around someone their own age too. Volunteering for Barnardo s has also benefitted Beth, who feels that volunteering has improved her confidence and given her the skills to communicate effectively with the disabled young person she helps. Beth originally started volunteering as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award, but she has enjoyed it so much, she plans to continue. She hopes that the skills and experiences she is having through volunteering will enable her to go onto University and eventually join the Police. Beth s Story Beth is a young volunteer befriender at our Pembrokeshire VLinx Service, who is currently studying for her GSCEs. She volunteers once a week to accompany a If you want more information on joining the team as a member of staff or volunteer, please find more information on our website: www. 35

RETAIL, FUNDRAISING AND COMMISSIONED CHILDREN S SERVICES ACHIEVEMENTS AND INCOME In Barnardo s Cymru enjoyed a successful year of fundraising, and we thank all the individuals, schools, organisations and volunteers involved. Community Fundraising income in Wales totalled 121,838 from a number of successful activities. Our amazing Barnardo s Helper Groups (BHGs) organised a host of events including Toddles in Haverfordwest and Cowbridge raising a total of 2,500, the Jojo Maman Bebe Coffee Morning in Abergavenny and the annual Magical Music concert in Porthcawl, which raised 8,000. The Celebrity Tug of War and Celebration Lunch in Bridgend, organised by Liz Singer, Chair of Barnardo s Appeals Advisory Board as part of her fundraising year as High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan, raised an amazing 30,000. The Wales Challenge Events team have been busy again this year with the South Wales Bike Ride, Cardiff Half Marathon and the Severn Bridge Half Marathon. In addition to this, the Events team were also successful in attracting new business totalling 23,000. Collectively bringing their total income raised to 75,263! Our two biggest partnerships in Wales are currently with John Lewis and Jojo Maman Bebe. The John Lewis Cardiff store raised 3,314 as part of our partnership. Jojo Maman Bebe supported Barnardo s through their From a Mother to Another campaign. Centred around Mother s Day, the campaign sought to encourage mothers to recycle unwanted good quality children and babywear by taking them into their local Jojo Maman Bebe store. Through Work Place Giving, the total number of all new payroll donors recruited in Wales in was 91, nearly 2.5 times higher than the previous year (37). This raised 75,000, around 4% of the total of 1.89m. 26,900 was raised in for projects in Wales from Trusts. Philanthropy also enjoyed a successful year, with on-going support from the Moondance Foundation and The Waterloo Foundation, which last year donated 25k for our North Wales CSE/Missing service, 90,000 to Merthyr Young Carers (to cover 3 years of VF), and 17,500 to partfund our Family Support Workers at Parc Prison s Visitor Centre. Over 625k was left in Wills to Barnardo s from 29 supporters living in Wales during with an average residuary (% gift in Wills) of over 64k, 28% higher than Barnardo s national average of 50,000. Over 90,000 of gifts left in Wills in were restricted for use by Barnardo s in Wales including a single gift of 83,550.
