Heritage Volunteer Organisers Scotland Heritage Volunteer Managers Conference The, Forthside Way, Stirling Thursday, 21 September 2017 Keynote Presentation Understanding and engaging 21st-century volunteers What trends do we see in rates of volunteering and the amount of time given? What prevents people from giving their time? What are the gaps between what people want and what we offer? We ll explore these questions and possible answers in this engaging keynote address. Rob Jackson, Director, Rob Jackson Consulting Ltd Rob has written, spoken and trained on volunteer programme management internationally for over twenty years. He has co-authored two books on volunteerism as well as contributing dozens of articles to a wide range of publications online and offline. Speaker Biographies Steve Callaghan, Managing Director, Eglingtoun Consulting Ltd Consultant on natural and built/cultural heritage management. Past roles: Assistant Director, NTS; Group Manager, NTS; Regional Director, NTS; Head of Heritage, Orkney Islands Council; Principal, Dalcairn Consultants; Heritage Officer, Ross & Cromarty Area of Highland Council; Education Officer, Doncaster Museums Service. Dughall Laing, Director, Recruit with Conviction Dughall Laing has over 16 years experience as an employability professional working with a number of organisations and users with large variety of barriers and other support needs. As the former vice chair of the Third Sector Employability Forum and chair of the Edinburgh Joined Up for Jobs Partnership Forum he contributed to the employability strategy with particular focus on employer engagement and partnerships.
Craig Rankine, Police Inspector, National Coordinator, Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and Special Constabulary, Police Scotland Craig Rankine is a Police Inspector with Police Scotland and currently the National Coordinator for the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and Special Constables (sworn volunteer police officers). Inspector Rankine joined Central Scotland Police in 1990 as a Police cadet, transferring to the regular Constabulary in Craig served in rural and city communities, carrying out a variety of uniform and CID duties such as Detective Constable (CID and Drugs Unit), Community Constable, Community Safety officer, Community Planning officer, uniformed Sergeant and Community Sergeant, prior to taking up his current post in In 2014, Craig established the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, an initiative which had considerable Royal and Political support as Police Scotland was forming, to deepen relationships between young people and the Police. Police Scotland now has approx youth volunteers and over 700 Special Constables, with ambitions to double that number. Tam McGarvey, Outreach Officer, Galgael Trust Tam graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1991 and worked as a volunteer at GalGael while he was also working as a community artist and has been employed at the project since As Outreach Officer Tam is responsible for in-house events and for connecting with other local grassroots and third sector organisations to work on partnership projects to promote community led regeneration and social justice. He is also involved in supporting GalGael volunteers and participants to get involved in influencing matters that affect them. Tam also organises weekly educational excursions where people who attend GalGael visit local cultural and natural heritage sites and venues as well as setting up craft taster sessions. Paul Edwards, Volunteer Photographer, National Galleries of Scotland Paul has been a professional photographer for over 25 years. He started as a staff member of the Lancashire Evening Post before working freelance in Edinburgh and across Scotland. Paul s love of art was born in Liverpool, where is originally from, and it was here that he started practising fine art photography. After relocating to Edinburgh he worked as a freelance photographer for the Scotsman, The Financial Mail on Sunday, The Sunday Times, Cancer Research UK and British Energy. Paul started volunteering as a photographer for the National Galleries of Scotland in 2016 and has photographed community and education activities, exhibition openings, and volunteer events.
Matthew Linning, Strategic Performance Manager, Volunteer Scotland Matthew Linning specialises in research and evaluation to improve organisational and sector performance. Recent experience includes work with Museums Galleries Scotland and currently with Volunteer Scotland. He led the research study on Volunteering in the Historic Environment in Zoe MacGregor, Learning and Practice Development Officer, Volunteer Scotland Zoe works with organisations to ensure they are confident in their volunteer management practice. At Volunteer Scotland this is achieved through training delivery, provision of online resources and supporting organisations through the Investing in Volunteers award. Prior to this, Zoe worked as Volunteering Development Manager at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and has also worked at a Volunteer Centre. Zoe enjoys volunteering too, from welcoming delegates in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to community clean ups and board membership. Mark Restall, Freelance trainer and consultant Mark has been a freelance trainer and consultant on volunteer management for almost 10 years. He has worked with a wide range of organisations, from volunteer-led museums to large national charities. Mark is best known for writing Volunteers and the Law, the only guide of its type - a new edition will be coming out soon. Volunteering and the Historic Environment Research Matthew Linning: Volunteer Management the Opportunities and Challenges Drawing upon evidence from recent research on volunteering across Scotland s historic environment sector, this talk examines the opportunities and challenges facing volunteer managers. The results of the research can be found here: Case Study Descriptions Police Scotland Drawing upon the experience of volunteering within a disciplined organisation, this talk examines the challenges and opportunities of growing and developing youth volunteering within the Police service. Recruit with Conviction Volunteering with convictions - how to address the unintended barriers encountered by people with convictions when it comes to recruiting volunteers.
National Galleries of Scotland Long-term sight loss caused Paul to give up his career as a professional photographer. Volunteering at the National Galleries of Scotland as a photographer not only brings him into contact with art that he loves but it is also an opportunity for him to deliver useful photography with his reasonable close vision. In his role as a volunteer, he feels empowered to act as an ambassador for others who are also partially-sighted. Project Scotland Project Scotland helps young people aged 16 to 30 to get on in life through volunteering with a local charity in Scotland. This case study will describe how a partnership with the National Trust for Scotland helped attract young people to the heritage sector. Galgael Trust GalGael s vision is for a Scotland where the rights of the individual are balanced with the rights of the whole; a strong sense of peoplehood where strong values, dignified work and reverence of place binds our communities together. This case study will describe how GalGael reclaim heritage as a means of building a sense of community, story and personal identity for unemployed people who have often become disengaged from their cultural and natural heritage. Heritage Volunteer Organisers Scotland A brief overview of the history of the HVOS network, current resources and activities, the challenges and opportunities of working in partnership and what is in store for the future. Skills Workshop Descriptions Steve Callaghan: Access to Volunteering An introduction to disability in the heritage workplace the facts and figures and the reality of a disabled member of the team. Protocols; adaptations; the law; the rewards. Rob Jackson: Measuring volunteer impact This session explores the development of methods for measuring the contribution volunteers make to an organisation and society. We ll explore how those methods work, their pros and cons, why Volunteer Managers should measure volunteering and how to use the data you produce. Mark Restall: The fundamentals of volunteering and the law Are you aware of the law around volunteer involvement? This session will give you an overview of where you stand, and where problems can arise. Everything will be in plain English, and the focus will be on practical information. It will be suitable for anyone new to volunteer management, or who would like an overview of relevant law.
Rob Jackson: Social media and volunteer management In this session, we will explore what social media is and how we can use it in our work with volunteers. Whether you re comfortable or terrified of social media, you ll learn some tips and insights to add this essential tool to your work with volunteers. Volunteer Scotland: Managing difficult conversations This session will explore how we can manage difficult conversations. Most importantly, we will discuss how we can avoid them in the first place through good volunteer management! Delegates will have time to share their experience by discussing scenarios and leave with some top tips and associated good practice guides. Mark Restall: Volunteering and the law ask me anything! Do you have any legal questions or concerns? This is a chance to ask questions and discuss legal issues related to volunteer management. It is not intended to be a substitute for professional legal advice, but it will give you the opportunity to clarify areas of law and get some general guidance on where you stand. HVOS Organising Committee Lauren Roden, Volunteer Programme Coordinator, National Galleries of Scotland Rosie Wylie, National Tourism & Community Manager, Historic Environment Scotland Amy Drysdale, People Relations, Policy, and Engagement Officer, National Trust for Scotland Deborah Wilson, Volunteer Coordinator, National Museums Scotland Gareth Jenkins, Volunteer Coordinator (Museums and Galleries), City of Edinburgh Council Beverley Donaldson, Assistant Curator- Volunteers, Scottish Maritime Museum
