Service Unit Annual Planning Catalog: Lead like a Girl Scout! Go-getter Educate the community about Girl Scouts while extending and retaining membership. Innovator Problem solve with creativity, flexibility to support all girls and adults. Risk-Taker Make decisions, develop plans, provide on new experiences. Leader Empathize, identify strengths, and empower others. The service unit fulfills its role by ensuring that: Service unit communication and activities reflect the mission and goals of the organization. Girls and adults have opportunities to join and participate in Girl Scouts. Girls have access to a quality Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Volunteers feel prepared to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Volunteers have a network and community of support that provides a safe and comfortable environment to ask questions and learn from each other.
2 R ecruitment Efforts Notes Description: To promote, support, and recruit new girl and adult members Many hands make light work. Reach out to troop leaders and ask them to speak on behalf of Girl Scouts at open houses! Recruitment Events Fall Membership Campaign Identify volunteers to hold short term recruitment positions (school coordinators) in schools without a recruiter Attend open houses Recruitment events in K-5 schools Parent/caregiver meetings Meet the leader events Community Fairs Second chance recruitments Themed recruitments Community business recruitments (daycare, skating rink, etc.) Faith based recruitments Daisy 2B Spring events Adult recruitment opportunities beyond the family. Publicity Posting of flyers and posters in community School Newsletters/flyers Bracelets for girls during Girl Talks Girl Scout Week celebration Girl Experiences Service Unit Early Bird Event Fall Break/Spring Break Day Camp Experiential/Troop 101 (volunteers or staff modeling a troop s initial meetings with interested, but not committed adults to form a troop with these adults and girls by running troop meetings together with them over a maximum of a six week period.) When you are in the community share your experiences! Set up a booth at the county fair to promote Girl Scouts Set up a booth at local festivals to promote what the service unit is doing in the community (list festival) Participation in local parades (list holiday) Partner with a local agency to implement a service unit wide service project Schedule a talk with a civic group to talk about Girl Scouts and what we are doing in the community Invite community partners to service unit meetings to share opportunities with volunteers Identify community businesses and organizations to offer series Promote troop and service unit activities and projects in local media Use of yard signs, car magnets and other Girl Scout messaging in community MISSION Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
4 R enewal Efforts F amily Partnership Description: To support and retain members A successful troop needs a leadership team so encourage every parent to become a member! Description: Provides the financial support that enables girls and adults to achieve the mission and goals of the Girl Scout Program. Host a family event where adults can see their daughter s experience in Girl Scouting. Give them an opportunity to learn about the organization, see the benefit for their girl, as well as the entire community. Help identify and support troops that are losing leaders to find new leadership or place girls in existing troops Promote On-Time registration Direct calls/texts (not just s) by service team members to all leaders/troops that did not Early Bird register to get them registered by September 30 Invite lapsed girls to troops or service unit functions (cookie season is a great time to bring lapsed girls back to Girl Scouts) Offer an On-Time registration incentive or event for troops Promote Early Bird registration Attend end of year meeting for new troops (to renew registration) Host Service Unit bridging event-engage families Offer an Early Bird registration incentive or event (Pool Party, Fishing Derby, etc.) Bring back a friend/increasing troop size Develop a family partnership plan that best fits your community Restaurant Night Partner with a local restaurant to host a one night give back to Girl Scouts for volunteer week Tack on additional fee to service unit event to give to family partnership. Service Unit Change Campaign (fill the bottle or Penny Wars) Cupcake Wars/Cake Auction Thin Mint Sprint/Other region wide events Host a dinner/meal (spaghetti/chicken or pancake) where proceeds go to family partnership Implement an opportunity to buy and decorate an item to put up at event (i.e. a snowflake or the father/daughter winter dance) Have a volunteer give a presentation to parents explaining the importance of family partnership and ask for support Engage in a friendly competition by having individual troop campaigns asking for family partnership support Sign Up for Community Rewards Kroger Rewards Promote and encourage families/leaders to register their Kroger Plus Cards (Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo regions) Community Market Encourage families and leaders to save their original grocery receipts for cash back program (Lima and Toledo regions) Amazon Smile Encourage families and leaders to support Girl Scouts of Western Ohio by shopping at smile.amazon.com
5 F amily Engagement G irl Support & Activities Description: Create a stronger connection between families and Girl Scouts which in return leads to better girl experience, retention and volunteers. No two families connect with Girl Scouts in the same way. During their annual parent meeting, help leaders ask families what they hope their daughter gets out of Girl Scouts and use that information to connect with families throughout the year. Description: To keep girls connected to Girl Scouting and broaden their network by engaging new members, gain new skills and build relationships Get girls involved in planning service unit activities. When activities are fun and girls are engaged, they are more likely to continue their experience. Progressive opportunities for girls who participate in Girl Scouts outside of the troop help keep girls connected to Girl Scouts. Family communication for upcoming program opportunities Volunteer opportunities within the service unit Facebook/Shutterfly (other social media site) for caregivers All caregivers receive or have access to a calendar of events for the service unit Educate leaders how to engage parents/caregivers at troop meetings and events Invite families to Bridging or Rededication Events Host events to invite families to: Me and My Gal Camp Out Me and My Guy or Father/Daughter Event Fishing Derby Powder Puff Afternoon Tea Spa Day Court of Awards Bridging Ceremony Ensure girl planning is part of all service unit events Hold girl planning meetings to get input Send out troop surveys or ask girls what they would like to do Ask girls to vote on themes for service unit events Invite individual registered girls to service unit events Invite lapsed girls and series girls to events Participate in a circle service unit event Sponsor a volunteer-led summer day camp for girls Educate leaders in Girl Scout Journeys and how they support Take Action projects Tie a service project to a service unit event and invite speakers to talk to the girls about the project Offer progressive experience for girls Host Events such as: Juliette Gordon Lowe s Birthday World Thinking Day Service Unit Camp Out Badge workshops Service Unit Day Camp Overnight Lock-in Journey Day or overnight Fishing Derby Girl Scout week Bridging
6 V olunteer Support, Training and Enrichment P roduct Sales Description: To support volunteers, new and returning in the GSLE program Remember how it felt to be new in Girl Scouts or when you went from one grade-level to the next. The network of support the service unit provides can make a difference for a volunteer and her experience. Description: To provide support to both girls and leaders during fall product and cookie sale When girls participate in product sales, they are helping support goals for their troop fun and meaningful activities! Provide support to new leaders Call new leaders to welcome them Facilitate Troop Start Up Assist with setting up troop, parent/caregiver meeting and bank account Personal invitation to service unit meetings from a team member/ mentor Assign mentors (grade level, recruiter, individual) Provide orientation and link to Volunteer Tool Kit Connect to service unit communication, website and Facebook Hold Girl Scouting 101 at service unit/circle level Service team checks in with new leaders during key times Hold a troop finances workshop to support troop reporting. Ensure all volunteers are invited to service unit meetings and events and are connected to communication, website and Facebook. Volunteer incentives for attending service unit meeting or events (fun bucks, gift card drawings) Host an Investiture/Re-Dedication Ceremony Implement informal recognitions to show appreciation Promote/support GSUSA/GSWO formal recognitions Service Unit enrichment activities at meetings (i.e. String art, tie dye techniques, paint night, game workshop, SWAPS (possibly connect it to different badges) Ensure learning opportunities (Highest Awards, Journey s Workshop, etc.) Including Short and Snappy s (Start Your Year Off Right, Girl-Led Planning, Flag Etiquette, Ceremonies, Effective Endorsements, Troop Money Earning, Girl Scouts: It s A Family Affair, Family Partnership: It s For The Girls, Troop Record Keeping, Outdoor progression) Ensure bridging leaders are prepared for new level (provide resources, mentoring, help prepare, bridging event) Educate leaders about Girl Scout program activities including summer camp and local community program partners Implement in-person trainings for fall sale managers and cookie sale managers Ensure troops are eligible to participate (registered, at least two leaders and finance report on file) Ensure service unit/circle holds a program focused cookie rally Communicate service unit product program goals to troops so the girls and leaders can set their troop and individual goals with the intent to contribute to the success of the overall service unit goal Identify opportunities in community for Cookie Booths
