The forty days of Lent recall the Jewish and Christian traditions of a time of testing, tribulation, endurance and temptation. It is a time to start afresh from Christ. Let us take this opportunity during Lent to remind ourselves about the changes we want to make for ourselves. Loving God, we thank you for the promise that Easter will follow the hard work of Lent. We thank you for the days when we can rejoice together. We thank you through Christ our Lord. Amen. PRINCIPAL S LEAVE As you know I have been on leave for the past two weeks. It was great to arrive back at school on Monday and see lots of friendly and happy faces. I would like to thank Bec Fahey for leading the school community while I was away. I would also like to thank all the staff for stepping up when needed. I am truly blessed with a wonderful staff who are committed and willing to share their skills and talents. Thank you. COMMISSIONING MASS & OFFICIAL OPENING OF REFURBISHMENTS AND RENOVATIONS On Friday 13 th March (week 7) we will hold our Commissioning Mass in St Anacletus Church at 12pm. The purpose of this Mass is for the staff, parents and parishioners to be formally acknowledged and commissioned to do their work for the students for the upcoming year. Bishop Greg O Kelly will be celebrating this very special Mass with us along with Fr Leon. I encourage all parents to attend, especially if you play an important role in the school such as a volunteer, P&F or School Board. Following the Commissioning Mass we will return to school for the Official Opening and Blessing of our newly renovated and refurbished school building. There will be a number of special guests attending. Bishop Gregory will be opening and blessing the building. Light refreshments will be available after the formalities and people will have the opportunity to look around our new school spaces. I hope you are able to make this special afternoon as it will be a celebration for our whole school and parish community.

2 PARENTING WORKSHOP On the final page of this newsletter is an advertisement for parenting workshops which will be running for the next 5 weeks. It is being organised by Emily Zubrinich from CAMHS. This is a great initiative and I encourage as many parents/caregivers to take advantage of this free opportunity to build on the positive relationships you have with your children. P&F AGM Last night the P&F held their Annual General Meeting. I would like to thank the P&F for their continued support and endorse the fantastic work that they commit to do each week for our students. Our P&F is in great shape and the healthy relationship between school and home bears much fruit because of this lovely group of parents and helpers. Please see a list of the newly elected committee included later in this newsletter. SCHOOL BOARD AGM - TONIGHT The School Board is an essential part of the school community. It sets direction for the school in the best interests of the students. The School Board AGM will be held on Wednesday 25th February at 7:00pm (Week 5). All positions are vacant and we are calling for nominations to join the School Board. Please find nomination forms attached below and return them to school prior to the AGM. I urge anyone who is interested to come along. Role of the Board Each diocesan School Board has responsibility for the overall wellbeing of its school. In practice, this means that, in a spirit of partnership, Boards act in an advisory capacity to: develop policies that nurture the religious dimension and guide the direction of the school; develop the relationship between the school and the local Church; ensure that the academic standards of the school must be at least as distinguished as that achieved in other schools in the region; support the administration of the school; offer pastoral care to the school community; protect children; monitor buildings and grounds development and maintenance; exercise financial stewardship of the school; ensure compliance with legal obligations. Potential members of a School Board should: possess an enthusiasm for and willingness to promote the mission of Catholic schools; bring to the Board their gifts and skills; desire to give service to their school community; have an ability to work cooperatively and constructively with all members of the Board; be prepared to undertake formation; have an ability and desire to uphold confidentiality in Board matters; have sufficient time to devote to Board duties. 3 APRIM NEWS PROJECT COMPASSION Running through the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of caring supporters, all in the name of justice and peace. It is the lifeblood of Caritas Australia; and without it, they could not do the vital work they do. In Project Compassion 2014, nearly $11 million was raised to help the world's poorest communities. It is wonderful to know that St Joseph s School community played a part in contributing to this awesome fundraising effort. The theme for Project Compassion 2015 is Food for Life. Food is essential for all life, yet many of the world s poorest people do not have food security. That means they live from day-to-day, uncertain of how to afford or how to access their next meal. Without food, the rest of life is impossible to contemplate: how can you plan for the future or educate your children when you fear you will be hungry? As Pope Francis says: It is a well-known fact that current levels of production are sufficient, yet millions of people are still suffering and dying of starvation. This is truly scandalous. Project Compassion 2015 explores how Caritas Australia is helping the world s poorest people establish sustainable food, walking with them as they free themselves from the burden of food insecurity and develop new, improved income streams for a better future. Stories from Fiji, Niger, Indonesia, Peru, Nepal and Australia show how our supporters help people to grow and access food for life. Last week we began our fundraising efforts in two ways. The first was to send home a money box to each family and ask you if you could collect any loose change you may have over the Lenten period. The second was selling pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. We cooked over 100 pancakes and raised $60. Thank you to everyone that supported Project Compassion last week. In weeks 6 and 8 the Kids Café will be hosting Fish Friday and donating all proceeds to Project Compassion. I thank the P&F for their support of this wonderful organisation. On Fish Friday s there will be 2 fish fingers and a bowl of rice available for $2. Fruit boxes will be available as normal for $1. - Bec Fahey

4 SCHOOL NEWS GR8 PEOPLE ARE.. FAIR At St Joseph s School each month we focus on one of the 10 important attributes of gr8 people. This month we are focusing on being fair. Being fair is about the way that we treat other people. The old saying of Treat other people, the way that you would like to be treated, is certainly true. People who are fair know about their responsibilities as well as their rights. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) have agreed to a list of children s rights. These were developed to protect children throughout the world. A right is a commitment that is owed to you. Whilst it is important that we have rights, we need to also be aware that we have responsibilities as well. A responsibility is a commitment that you owe to other people. We all have rights AND responsibilities. People who are fair, believe in justice and a fair go for all. Fair people are aware and accepting of people s differences. They don t judge a book by it s cover. They judge people by their character and behaviour not by what they look like. Fair people don t judge others on their race, religion, gender, disability, appearance, the clothes they wear or how much money they have. Fair people recognise that all people have feelings, needs, hopes and dreams. Being fair is about being understanding and including others whom may be different. Fair people aren t prejudiced, they see people as individuals Being fair is about believing in justice. It s about solving problems fairly according to the rules or laws of society. These rule or laws are made to make the world a fair place to live. People who are fair believe in justice and doing the right thing. They do what is right. They don t accept bullies, cheats or liars. They are courageous and forgiving. They cooperate and share the load. Fair people realise that rules were made to keep everyone safe. They know that together we can accomplish great things, if everyone is given a fair go. Never look down on anybody unless you re helping them up. 5 R/1/2 CLASS NEWS This term we welcomed ten new students to the R/1&2 class. We had a very busy start to the term with swimming and an excursion to Jamestown which everyone really enjoyed! Our focus this term is Science and we have been learning about how things grow by growing plants and watching tadpoles turn into frogs. The Receptions have been working hard learning their numbers and letters and the Year 2 s have been writing stories and practising their addition and subtraction in numeracy. Our class liturgy is in Week 6 and we have all been practising our parts so if you get the time we would love for you to join us! I look forward to the rest of the term. - Rahni Stephens

In the past LAP Helpers have volunteered their time to listen to students read which is invaluable for both the students and the teacher.
