3 LOCAL STORIES MERCY Malaysia Vaccination Outreach Clinic On 19 th March 2014, MERCY Malaysia deployed its team for the third mission in its vaccination programme. The vaccination clinic began at 1pm and ended at 4.10pm and was held at HELP Learning Centre, Kepong. The beneficiaries for this vaccination clinic are students of HELP Learning Centre (HLC), under 18 years old. The Myanmarese teacher informed the team that many of her students had already left for resettlement. Despite the news received, there were a few new students who had just registered in the school. The team reported that most of the students were calm during the vaccination process. Dr. Puteri assessing the students previous records and prescribing vaccines for them Dr. Zia-U recording a patient s weight Flood Response in Long Panai, Marudi, Sarawak On the 8 th to 11 th February 2014, MERCY Malaysia Sarawak Chapter mission responded and delivered the second batch of humanitarian aid to 200 doors of flood beneficiaries in Long Panai, Long Pahlo and Long Ukok in Marudi. The mission response teams were Dr. Ehfa Bujang Safawi, Bybiana Micheal, Johnny Uvang Ajeng, Roslyn, Martin Ak Jandom and Hew Cheong Yew. Volunteers helping to pack the hygiene kits The 200 packages of hygiene kits were handed over to the Ketua Kampung and his committee members

4 LOCAL STORIES MERCY Malaysia Provides Psychosocial First Aid and Mental Health Assistance to Malaysia Airlines staff and crew MERCY Malaysia joins in to help Malaysia Airlines System (MAS), by providing psychosocial first aid together with mental health assistance to the staff and crew of Malaysia Airlines. Its priority will be reaching out a helping hand to those who are affected by this distressing event which involves humane, supportive and practical help to those in need. The friendly space named MERCY Malaysia Support Center for the airlines staff and crew has been set up at the Flight Management Building, KLIA. This assistance from MERCY Malaysia is led by Executive Council member, Dr Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid who is also an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, Kuliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). 5 INTERNATIONAL STORIES MERCY Malaysia Hands Over Completed Restoration Works To Ormoc District Hospital On 6 th of March 2014, MERCY Malaysia successfully handed over its completed rehabilitation works of Ormoc District Hospital to the Governor of Leyte Province, today. The work, which covered of up to 80 per cent of the damaged area of the hospital, was completed on 23 rd December Ormoc District Hospital is a Level 1 referral hospital situated in Ormoc City and was badly affected by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. The hospital, operated by the Provincial Government of Leyte, sustained 80 per cent damage on its roofing structure. After the disaster, there was only one out of three blocks which was operational while others including wards, operating complex and delivery rooms were totally damaged and not functional. MERCY Malaysia is one of the first humanitarian agencies to have arrived at Ormoc District Hospital on 14 th November 2014, a week after the super typhoon struck the central Leyte Island. MERCY Malaysia deployed its Emergency Response Unit consisting of tents, equipment and medical supplies to run a temporary Outpatient Department which was in operation for two months. More than 20 medical volunteers were deployed during the period. New facilities donated by MERCY Malaysia at Ormoc District Hospital Dato Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd. 6 INTERNATIONAL STORIES MERCY Malaysia Handed Over Completed Restoration Works and A New Ambulance to Leyte Provincial Hospital MERCY Malaysia started the rehabilitation work on January 3, 2014 which includes repair works of the roof and building structure of all the damaged blocks. The painting works of three blocks of the hospital was also done by MERCY Malaysia. The rehabilitation works costs RM169,230 over a period of two months and it was completed on February 28, The following are the rehabilitation and construction works at Leyte Provincial Hospital. 1. Rehabilitation of the Operating Rooms which include fixing the roof trusses, replacement of roofing sheets, hollow block walls, ceiling and reinforcement of the roof beams. 2. Rehabilitation of the Pediatric and medical wards as well as the surgical and ob-gyne wards through repair work of the roof trusses, replacement of roof sheets and ceiling. Together with the South Korean army, MERCY Malaysia rehabilitated the Outpatient Department block and laboratory block by fixing the roof trusses and installing new roofing sheets. Collaboration with the army continued with repair works of the roof trusses of the cafeteria block. 4. The roofing of the walkway from the Outpatient Department to the wards was also fixed. In addition, MERCY Malaysia also donated a new ambulance amounting to RM92,300 to assist this hospital in serving the community in Palo and its suburbs. Dato Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd. Rashidi, Senior Advisor, Communications & Fundraising received donation cheque from Ally H, Musicpreneur and Organizing Chairperson for Play It Forward Music and Art Charity Show Play It Forward Music & Art Charity Show in The Star, 22 February 2014 PLAY It Forward Music & Art Charity Show On 26 th February 2014, PLAY It Forward organized Play It Forward Music & Art Charity Show event at Black Box Publika, Solaris Dutamas. PLAY It Forward is a community of like-minded people using the expression of music and art in a positive way to give back to society via performances. The charity show managed to raise an amount of RM4,140 to MERCY Malaysia as one of the beneficiary for this event. Mendaki Untuk Syria On the 23rd of March 2013, a hiking event entitled Mendaki untuk Syria at Broga Hill, Semenyih, Selangor, was a fund-raising effort organized by Latepackers to help raise funds for Syrian children and refugees. These affected populations are greatly affected by the war crisis where some have been denied access to medication, food supply and other necessities. The funds raised will be donated to MERCY Malaysia for the humanitarian aid in Syria which will be used to provide medication and other essential needs.
