Time off in Lieu will be given in line with the charity s policy. About the UK s new Bowel Cancer Charity Bowel Cancer UK and Beating Bowel Cancer have joined together to stop bowel cancer. We are determined to save lives, improve the quality of life and support all those affected by bowel cancer. We enable and fund research, provide information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all. Our pledge is bold, ambitious and inspiring. Within ten years: We will transform survival rates, from only one in every two-people surviving bowel cancer over five years, to three out of four people surviving There will be better information and support for every patient throughout their journey Screening will be optimal, leading to more cancers being detected early or prevented Following our merger in January 2018, a new name and brand for the charity will be unveiled later this year. The charity will also be moving its London head office to another central London location. 1
2 Job Summary The Head of Support Services is a central and important role at the charity. Working closely with teams across the charity, this role offers a unique and exciting opportunity to make a direct difference for people affected by bowel cancer. The post-holder, who will have a clinical background, will work closely with the Director of Services to lead the development and implementation of the charity s services for patients and their families. You will manage and mentor a staff team which will include nurse volunteers and staff as well as others focused on supporting our patient networks, including our forum. The team will be responsible for responding to questions/queries from people who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer (or who know someone who has) and work closely with the Head of Information to lead the development, update and dissemination of the charity s patient information resources. You will also work closely with the Director of Services to develop a new range of support services as part of our services strategy. Main responsibilities Strategy & Management Lead on the development of a national strategy and annual plans for the Charity s services for patients and their families, as part of the overall services strategy, clearly identifying where our engagement can add benefit and value Ensure that team members have agreed plans and receive training and development opportunities to enable them to perform their roles Develop regular engagement mechanisms with patients and their families to ensure that our services are targeted and meeting a real need Ensure that all of the Charity s services are of the highest quality and develop and implement monitoring and evaluation processes Manage and grow the team and ensure that team members are supported and are clinically and professionally current In partnership with the Director of Services and other colleagues help to develop and manage the charity s relationships with key nurse networks such as the National Colorectal Cancer Nurse Network (NCCNN) and Scottish Colorectal Cancer Nurse Network (SCCNN). Deputise for the Director of Services when required 2
3 Service Development Lead on the development and implementation of all of the Charity s direct services for patients such as the helpline and forum and work with the Head of Information on the development of new patient information resources Proactively look to develop, test and roll out new high-quality services that can be delivered digitally, by telephone or face to face as appropriate Working closely with the Senior Research Communications and Information Officer, develop the charity s information on research trials open for recruitment and also on key research results so that patients can easily find the information they need to make good treatment decisions With the Director of Services, proactively develop relationships and partnerships with like-minded organisations and individuals in order to develop and build the Charity s services portfolio and to promote our work Working closely with the Head of Information, ensure that patient information resources are developed in accordance with the Charity's Information policy and are in line with Information Standard Accreditation requirements Work closely with the Communications team and colleagues in the Services department to promote the charity s services to patients and their families as well as to health and social care professionals and relevant health service agencies Work with the Communications team and Senior Research Communications and Information Officer in particular to ensure that we communicate about and share key information and developments and opportunities for trial participation with patients and their families. Work with the fundraising team to raise funds for existing and new direct services. Internal Expertise Work closely with the relevant staff, including the Chief Executive, Policy and Campaigns, Research and Communications teams and the Charity s Medical Advisory Board, to help develop the Charity s key messages, policy positions and responses to media queries Act as a key internal expert on all aspects of bowel cancer treatment and care Develop and support initiatives to ensure the staff of the Charity are knowledgeable and up-to-date with clinical developments in bowel cancer Support the Head of Policy and Campaigns by inputting into the charity s policy positions and responses to NICE/SMC (and other) clinical consultations on different aspects of bowel cancer treatment and care as required Work collaboratively with the Head of Research to ensure research needs around bowel cancer treatment and care are considered and reflected in our research priorities Work with the Communications team to identify potential case studies and provide copy for internal newsletters, the website and social media as required. 3
4 Work closely with the Head of Health Promotion and Training and support the development of the charity s Clinical Study days and personally deliver training and presentations to groups of health care professionals as required. External representation Represent the Charity and make presentations, as required, at external meetings, conferences, working groups etc. Act as a specialist media spokesperson where appropriate Give presentations or training as part of our overall service delivery and promotion of the organisation General Maintain knowledge of current bowel cancer clinical developments through appropriate training courses, self-directed learning, reading journals, attending conferences and liaison with allied healthcare professionals. Ensure the Chief Executive and Director of Services are well briefed about treatment developments. Participate in all relevant meetings of the Charity Ensure data is handled within the recommendations of the Data Protection Act Maintain confidentiality of information as per the Charity's policy Attend internal / external training courses as appropriate Undertake additional responsibilities as required that are in line with the remit of this role. 4
5 Person Specification Essential Experienced, registered General Nurse Experienced cancer nurse specialist ideally with a specialism in lower GI/ colorectal care or oncology Excellent working knowledge of (bowel) cancer clinical management and patient issues Good understanding of psychosocial issues in relation to cancer Ability to develop realistic strategies and plans Ability to develop information resources for people affected by cancer Ability to inspire and manage a team Excellent written and oral communication skills with confidence to deliver presentations and training sessions Self-motivated with good time management skills Enthusiastic, team player Good understanding of the skills needed to give information and support by telephone and to those with bowel cancer, their relatives and friends Strong commitment to the work and mission of Bowel Cancer UK Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.) A commitment to Equal Opportunities Desirable Experience of supervising both clinical and non-clinical staff Experience of developing plans and budgets 5
