1 Lesson Plan 5 Resources Aims Objectives Research and present Face Up CD-ROM, smartboard and projector, Internet access and PowerPoint. To prepare young people for adult life by helping them to develop knowledge of how to access further advice and support. This is a requirement identified by OFSTED in their 2013 report. Identify people and resources that might help pupils to respond to controlling behaviour. Use the internet to research organisations that might provide help and support. Starter Introduction Enable pupils to share the information that they discover through their research through short presentations. Ask pupils to discuss who might help if they found themselves in an abusive or controlling relationship including; teachers, youth workers, family members and friends. Ask pupils to complete handout 1.1 to describe a network of support. Internet access is required to research organisations providing advice and support to people who may be affected by controlling or abusive relationships. The activity on the CD ROM is the weakest it is therefore best to use handout 5.2 to facilitate the research process, rather than the quiz on the CD ROM. Development Handout 5.2 contains a list of national organisations that offer support to young people who may be affected by controlling or abusive behaviour. It may be best to divide your class into small groups and allocate one or two organisations per group. Ask them to use the internet to research the services provided by these organisations. Ask pupils to prepare a short presentation to share the information that they discovered during the research process. The CD ROM contains an amusing video showing how not to make a presentation. Ask pupils to spot presentation mistakes made on the video. Plenary Assessment It is useful, if pupils spend a little time organising the information that they discovered before sharing it with the rest of the group. PowerPoint provides a tool that can help with the organising process, but it is not essential. Ask pupils to share the knowledge that they have accumulated concerning where they can go for help and support. They may still have gaps in handout 5.2 if they focused their research on only one or two organisations. Ask them to fill in those gaps with the information that is being shared by the other groups. Handouts 5.1 and 5.2 can be assessed when they have been completed, as can

2 Additional activities any PowerPoint slides that were prepared. The presentations themselves can be observed. Are pupils now more knowledgeable about people and organisations that might provide advice and support? This activity can be extended by inviting in speakers from local agencies who might provide advice and support.

3 Teachers notes 5 Starter Are there staff in school who would help if you were affected by controlling or abusive behaviour? Are there other pupils in schools who might be helpful? For example peer mentors, buddies or peer mediators? Do you have friends who might help? Are there family members who you could go to for help? Are there organisations in the community who would help?

What other service do ChildLine offer that might be useful to people affected by controlling or abusive behaviour? 4. What does NSPCC stand for? 5. Describe three things that the NSPCC does. 6. Here is a list of national organisations that support young people who may be affected by controlling or abusive behaviour, go to their web site and find out what they do. Use the space below to describe the services that they offer. Bursting the Bubble - Website for teenagers living with family violence. Use the internet to find organisation close to where you live that might help young people affected by controlling or abusive behaviour.

7 Handout 5.3 Design a poster that could be used in school to raise awareness of domestic abuse. You could choose to focus on the different types of abuse that could occur within teenage relationships so others are made more aware of the signs of an abusive relationship. Alternatively, you could use your research findings from lesson 5 to design a poster to raise awareness of support and help available either locally or nationally.
