3 It was a wonderful, inspirational day out and great to get away from daily stresses and learn more about Autism which is a daily struggle for us. I would like to thank everyone concerned for enabling me to attend otherwise I wouldn t have been able to. It has been fantastic, had such an enjoyable day having all information under one roof to access around Autism was great and everyone we spoke to were so enthusiastic. Thank you very much for a wonderful day. It s been great as a carer to have a day away it s been wonderful. I would like to add my heartfelt thanks for making us aware of the show and giving us the opportunity to attend it. Thanks too for looking after us so well it s nice to be the one cared for a day! 5 Keeping you informed We are committed towards seeking your views about how we provide our services, as well as working in partnership with other agencies that provide Mental Health and Wellbeing services and would like to keep Family Carers informed about opportunities to be invited to events, workshops and forums. These are occasions whereby involving Family Carers, services can be improved. For example Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust (NSFT) who have service user and family carer involvement groups that take place throughout Suffolk and Norfolk or Suffolk User Forum or Suffolk Voluntary and Statutory Partnership or Healthwatch, Suffolk and many more organisations who are waiting to hear from Family Carers. We would like to keep Family Carers informed about involvement opportunities and this can be through sending you an occasional or copy of a poster about an event. For more information contact Judith Bourne, T: , E: MH@suffolkfamilycarers.org Substance Misuse Involvement You don t have to be abusing drugs & alcohol to be affected by it Substance misuse can break relationships apart. At Suffolk Family Carers we are working with Turning Point to provide opportunities for family carers whose life is affected by someone else s substance misuse have a say and be involved in services. Therefore it is crucial that family carers and service users views about how services are being provided are considered to help treatment services be more 5 effective. Also for the dependent (service user) with support from families or other social networks within the community, by being involved the service users chances of long-term recovery are improved. There are numerous ways in which a service user or family carer can ensure that their voice is being heard when it comes to drug & alcohol treatment services within Suffolk. If you would like to find out more about drug & alcohol treatment services in Suffolk and how to get involved, please get in touch with Judith Bourne at Suffolk Family Carers. E: Judith.bourne@suffolkfamilycarers.org Together we can make a difference During the sessions Family carers meet together and use their experience and knowledge about drug & alcohol services as a way to get involved and explore how family carers and service users can work with Turning Point and Public Health Suffolk. There is the opportunity to meet with guest speakers whose work involves substance misuse, such as, British Red Cross, Turning Point teams, Norcas or undertake brief training on subjects identified by family carers. You are invited to come along to: The Key, 15 St Margaret's Plain, Ipswich IP4 2BB on Wednesdays, from 10.00am pm, refreshments are provided. The next session dates are: Wed. 12 th August 2015, 9 th September 2015 and thereafter once a month. To find out more information, please get in touch with Judith Bourne at Suffolk Family Carers. Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Special Measures A Message from Michael Scott Dear colleagues, As you are aware NSFT has been placed in special measures as a result of a negative CQC report. Whilst this presents a huge challenge for our trust, I have been struck by the number of offers of help received from our voluntary organisations and partners. We are delighted to receive these and I ll reflect upon the best way that we can utilise these kind offers of help. The first is to participate in some of our PLACE assessments. I m sure we d like to hear from you if you don t already get involved in these 6 assessments of ward environment and care. Secondly, we will be conducting mock CQC visits of our own. These are very much more valuable if there is an external pair of eyes, very often it s difficult to see something in an area that you work in every day. If you would like to get involved in either of these initiatives please do not hesitate to get directly in touch with me, but also discuss with people on the ground such as our operational director, Alison Armstrong in Suffolk. Thank you again for your offer of help. Kind regards Michael Scott Chief Executive Improving Service Together A new Service user and Carer engagement strategy to be introduced. Improving service together NSFT will be holding a succession of locality workshops to introduce the strategy and to look at how we can best start to implement and embed the 6 commitments in to services. The trust welcome Service users, Family Carers, Friends and family members to feedback on how best ways to deliver the strategy in local areas of Suffolk and Norfolk and identify any barriers that may hinder the implementation of the strategy. Please contact Sharon Picken at NSFT for more information Tel: Ext 6225 or Mobile: You are welcome to participate in opportunities to share your thoughts and experience at the following venues: East Suffolk (Ipswich) 4th August Ipswich quakers, 39 Fonnereau Road Ipswich IP1 3JH , Collinson Room, 9:30 13:30pm West Norfolk (Kings Lynn) 7th August The Preservation Trust, Thoresby College, Queen Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk PE30 1HX , Great Hall, 13:30 16:00 West Suffolk (Bury St Edmunds) 11th August Moreton Hall Community Centre, Symonds Road Bury St Edmunds Half hall, 13:30 16:00pm with tea trolley

N9:30 13:00 A Poem by Portia Nelson I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It is not my fault. It takes forever to find my way out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don t see it. I fall in. I can t believe I am in the same place. But it isn t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it there. I still fall in It s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. I walk down another street. Invite to Service Users and Carers for Involvement in Clinical Policy Reviews NSFT Clinical Effectiveness and Policy Group require service user and carer involvement to provide a qualitative perspective to the writing and review of relevant clinical policies. In particular, the group recognises it needs to understand the experience of those service users receiving care given under various clinical policies and seeks individuals to support this group in an advisory role. Individuals can express their interest in being involved in this process by contacting the Clinical Effectiveness Team by policy@nsft.nhs.uk before the 21st August Election for a Governor for Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust Could you represent your community by standing for election as a governor for Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust? The Trust provides wellbeing, mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services in the two counties. Covering a population of some 1.5million people, it is keen to ensure that its services are developed in line with people s needs. That s where you come in. As a Family Carer by using your experience, knowledge and skills by standing for election as a governor, you can influence how the Trust develops in the coming years. I m sure they would find that being a governor is an interesting and worthwhile way of making a contribution, and making a difference in terms of helping to make sure the Foundation Trust is accountable to service users, carers, and others directly involved in the its services, If you are interested in becoming a governor or for more information about other ways you can get involved with NSFT contact: Sharon Picken Service user and carer experience lead. 8 Healthwatch work to help you get the best out of health and social care services in Suffolk; whether it s improving them today or helping to shape them for tomorrow. Healthwatch are all about local voices being able to influence the delivery and design of their services not just people for who use them, but for anyone who might need them in the future. Contact: Healthwatch Suffolk, Norfolk House, Williamsport Way, Needham Market, Suffolk IP6 8RW. Telephone: info@healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk Calling ex-members of the Armed Forces (Regulars and Reserves) Healthwatch Norfolk is inviting you to share your views and experiences of mental health services in Norfolk & Suffolk. This is your chance have your say and help make your local services more effective for ex-service men and women across the region. More information is available from the Healthwatch Norfolk website Alternatively, you can call Ed Fraser on for an informal chat. The Armed Forces project is being conducted with support from Healthwatch Suffolk Care Act 2014 and Children & Families Act 2014 and implications for Family Carers. The Care Act is mainly for adults in need of care and support, and their adult carers. There are some provisions for the transition of children in need of care and support, parent carers of children in need of care and support, and young carers. However the main provisions for these groups (before transition) are in the Children and Families Act In April 2015 most of the Care Act will comes into force, including the way in which local authorities should carry out carer s assessments and needs assessments, how local authorities should determine who is eligible for support; and the new obligations on local authorities. In April 2016 the remaining parts of the Care Act will come into effect, including how local authorities should charge for both residential care and community care, and the introduction of the care cap. We need your help. Would you like to contribute to this newsletter? If you are a Family Carer and you would like to share something with other Family Carers, it could be anything from an experience you would like to share, a piece of helpful information, an event you have attend or maybe a hobby that you take part in that that you feel others might like to become involved in. If it s important to you then it s likely to be of interest to others. We would really value your contributions. If you would like to send an article to us, please contact Beverley Stearn T: E: MH@suffolkfamilycarers.org What is the Care Act? The Care Act replaces most current law regarding carers and people being cared for. It outlines the way in which local authorities should carry out carer s assessments and needs assessments; how local authorities should determine who is eligible for support; the new obligations on local authorities; and how local authorities should charge for both residential care and community care. 8
