HeadStart Swale Stakeholder Workshop
Housekeeping Agenda and timings of the morning Presentation available on Kelsi Toilets Fire exits #headstartmatters
Workshop Aims HeadStart is about building sustainability in Swale and we can only do this by involving our local partners in the design and delivery. We want you today to go away with a good understanding of HeadStart, knowing how you can be involved, and with some practical tools to use after today. #headstartmatters
Pre Workshop Questions Please take a couple of minutes to complete the pre workshop questions on your table. They are meant to be your first thoughts. We are asking you these questions to help us evaluate whether we have improved your knowledge about HeadStart by the end of this workshop. We will ask you the same questions again at the end. This will help us design and improve our future workshops. #headstartmatters
Introductions 1. Your name 2. Your organisation 3. Your involvement (if any) with HeadStart #headstartmatters
Early Help #headstartmatters
HeadStart Kent Mission Statement and Goals By 2020 Kent young people and their families will have improved resilience, by developing their knowledge and lifelong skills to maximise their own and their peers emotional health and wellbeing; so to navigate their way to support when needed in ways which work for them. There is always someone for me to talk to
HeadStart Update: Roll Out of School Groupings and Communities Swale and Gravesham fully operational Resilience Toolkit and Action Plans in place Successful stakeholder events taken place including representatives from Early Help, VCS organisations, adolescent and targeted emotional wellbeing services and schools (primary and secondary) Safe Spaces set up in schools and communities Peer Mentoring schemes established / in the process of being established in schools and communities Domestic abuse incidents notified to trained Designated Safeguarding Leads in schools HSK Senior Early Help Workers allocated cases and have been working with families currently or historically effected by domestic abuse Collection of various data for evaluation purposes, including WMF, case studies and training statistics.
Young People Coproduction is a requirement of the Big Lottery everything we do must be in partnership with young people. very active: Locally in Swale as well as centrally in Ashford. Young people continue to play a key role having been involved in the recruitment, commissioning and social marketing of the programme. Coproduction is the responsibility of all our partners. Resilience passports based on the 6 resilience domains have been developed and are currently being evaluated by young people.
Resilience Approach School staff in all HeadStart schools across Swale as well as many community partners have been trained in having Domains Based Conversations. In liaison with Early Help, additional intensive training has been given to pastoral teams at some schools where conversations are now underway. Resilience Domains. See Gilligan (1997) and Daniel and Wassell (2002).
How HeadStart Kent fits within Early Help Senior Early Help Worker for HeadStart in Swale Cases received via EHN then intensive 1-1 support provided for families and young people: Aged and attend a HeadStart Swale school Current or historic exposure to domestic abuse Possible emotional and mental health difficulties NOTE: The domains tool can be used when having any conversation with any young person, not just with an Early Help case. It can be used alongside Early Help or other procedures as the benefits found are universal Domains based conversations used with the young people I work within these Early Help cases. NOTE: The domains tool can be used when having any conversation with any young person, not just with an Early Help case. #headstartmatters
For each case within Early Help... HeadStart and Early Help Signs of Safety Full Family Assessment Voice of the parents, school + professionals Domains Based Conversation
Scanned example Completed by young person (voice of the child) #headstartmatters
What next? 1. Focus on greens first. What is going well in their lives? Why did you put green for there? 2. Gradually move on to amber and reds ask why they chose that colour. This may happen organically or you may need to ask further questions. 3. Ask what would make a red better? These help form the wellbeing goals. 4. Go back to green to finish on a positive. 5. For an Early Help case this helps complete the Family Assessment. #headstartmatters
Benefits of Domains Based Conversations An accessible, visual representation of their lives through the domains. Extra information given. (Particularly with young adolescents who struggle with communicating their feelings) Better suited for adolescents than the three houses - the domains tool offers an excellent alternative. Not designed to create more work! #headstartmatters
Carrying out a Review using the Domains Excellent visual progress tracker for the young person and professionals alike Supports the review process A second Domains Based Conversation can be carried out to identify key areas of progress or any setbacks Reds and ambers provide natural next steps #headstartmatters
Domains Activity 1. You would normally have the young person with you but for now, think of a young person you ve spoken to or worked with recently remember to keep the young person and their family anonymous. 2. With what you know, RAG rate at least one of the domains for this young person. (You may need to use your professional judgement) 3. Once you ve got a completed domain, discuss how you would use this tool to start and finish your conversation with the young person. 4. Discuss how you could use Domains Based Conversations within your own role/organisation? #headstartmatters
Logan s Story
20
How could you help Logan? In your current role or organisation, do you have any opportunities to support Logan at any point of his HeadStart journey? Please discuss this on your table before feeding back. For example: PIAS Attend meeting with Mum and Logan at school re. attendance concerns SATEDA Support programmes available for Mum, Logan and/or younger brothers Open Access workers Links Logan with other community groups, e.g. scouts / faith groups and their safe spaces 21
Resilience Hub V1 operational V2 launched in Oct 2017 Will be more young person friendly and contain more accessible resources on available services, activities and tools. Resilience Toolkit currently being reviewed and improved Quality Mark being developed Advice for non-headstart schools on how to access resources, use the toolkits, signposting for young people, etc.
