1 LakeViews American Association of University Women North Tahoe Branch Newsletter Vol. XXIX No. 4 December 2012 Holiday Party: December 13, :00 7:00 PM Home of Esther Sonnenberg 712 Agate Rd., Carnelian Bay This year s holiday party will be held at the home of Esther and Al Sonnenberg on Thursday December 13th. Casual Holiday party attire is appropriate. There will be an open bar and hearty hors d oeuvres. Please bring an appetizer of your choice. There will be a minimal charge of $18 per person to cover the cost of the wine. Any funds over expenses will go to Teck Trek. Reservation deadline is December 9 th. Please carpool as parking is limited. Board Meeting: No Board Meeting this month ******************************************************************************************** Co-Presidents Message: We had a lovely evening at Kathy Zacher s home for our November 8 th meeting. Well, to be more clear, the company was lovely, and the food plentiful, but it wasn t so lovely outside as a snowstorm arrived that afternoon and our cars were soon covered with over 4 of snow! However, we are a hardy bunch and we didn t let a snowstorm stand in our way. The purpose of the evening was strictly social, and we certainly followed the plan. Our Program Co-Chairs provided a little mixer activity to make sure we were talking enough! Three members of the Truckee AAUW branch joined us, and it was interesting to compare notes on Branch activities. While the Truckee Branch may not have formal meetings, they enjoy their Bridge and Gourmet Groups, and they send several girls to Tech Trek each year. The Great Decisions Group provided salads and beverages, and pizza was provided through a small donation by those attending. Thank you all for a most enjoyable gathering, and especially to Kathy for providing her home. Many members have asked how much we have received for Tech Trek as a result of the very articulate letter that Kathy Zacher composed and which was circulated by Nancy Cline last month. Fifteen of our members have sent in additional contributions amounting to $1055 additional funds for Tech Trek. Since July 1 st, we have collected a total of $1516 into our Tech Trek fund. Another $350 has been sent directly to AAUW-CA. We have received donations from the Rotary Club of Tahoe City, and Tahoe League for Charity, which will cover the expenses for two girls. We now have enough funds to send two more. We have reserved space for 6 girls at the camps, so we will need another $1700 to send the other two girls for 1
2 which we have reserved space at the camps. We are so thankful for our local charitable organizations and our NT-AAUW members who have stepped up to make personal donations to this wonderful program. If you have not yet had the opportunity to make a personal contribution, you can mail your checks to NT-AAUW, PO Box 5612, Tahoe City, CA 96145, or bring them to our Holiday Party on December 13 th. By the way, we just learned that should you wish to have a tax deduction for your contribution, the check needs to be made out to AAUW-CA SPF. By putting NT-AAUW Tech Trek in the memo line, we will be credited with the donation. We forward any checks that are designated AAUW-CA SPF to the Tech Trek office. Checks in the amount of $250 or more will be acknowledged by the Special Projects Funds office. Time certainly seems to be flying along this year. We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday with your friends and family, and we look forward to seeing you at Esther Sonnenberg s home for our traditional Holiday Party! Please Contact Kym Pipkin at kmpipkin@suddenlink.net or or Helen Foster at johnhelenfoster@att.net. Tech Trek: Ever wondered how we select our Tech Trekers? Here is the process: 1. We ask 7 th grade teachers (especially math & science teachers) to nominate students. They nominate girls based on their interest in math & science and who would benefit from this life-altering camp. They need to have an A or B in these classes. 2. The nominees meet with the AAUW Tech Trek coordinator and last years attendees. At this time they receive a packet of information and forms that have to be filled out by the nominees and their parents. They have 2 weeks to return the forms. 3. The forms are returned along with a one page essay written on a topic selected by the coordinator. 4. A panel of AAUW members review the applications. 5. The panel interviews each applicant and selects the campers based on a combination of the written applications and oral interviews. The number of girls selected is based on available funds. This becomes a bigger problem as the cost of the camps continues to increase. The camp personnel are all volunteers, but there are many costs associated with running the camps. The college campuses do charge a fee to use their sites, and this accounts for most of the increases. The parents are asked to contribute $ We select 2 alternates in case one of the girls can not attend. 7. We do follow-up interviews with the campers through their senior year in high school. Many of the girls do pursue careers which require majors in math or science. That is the process we, and every AAUW club, follow. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Shirley Hale at
