4 Introduction Introduction Uganda Cancer Child Foundation is a Civil Society Organization that works closely with Uganda Cancer Institute focusing on supporting children with cancer and raising awareness about cancer.children Caring about Cancer -3C program links its objectives and goals to communities, government and the International Agenda of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG no.3 ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all ages at all levels). In 2011, UCCF started the 3C program in schools with the aim of raising cancer awareness in schools all over Uganda. The 3C program is coordinated by schoolpatrons and annual workshops are organized to empower the patrons and evaluating the progress of the 3Cclubs in schools.

5 Updates from the school Patrons The patrons of the schools gave briefs of the previous activities of 3C in their schools as follows; Kings College Budo During the cancer month in October, the 3C club bought pink ribbons and distributed to everybody in the school 17th April 2016, there was a charity visit in which students including non-3c students visited the children s ward at Uganda Cancer Institute and donated some items. Paid Annual subscription fee 23rd April, organized with Reproductive Health Uganda involving teaching and non-teaching staff for cancer screening specifically breast and cervical cancer. Sensitization on circumcision and family planning was also done.

6 Update from Uganda Child Cancer Foundation The update was given by UCCF Team Leader, Mr. Ben Ikara as follows; UCCF has been engaged in several programs including; Education and awareness, patient support, advocacy and innovation, fundraising, water, sanitation and hygiene -WASH, mentorship of 3C graduates Engaged with Ministry of Health through Non Communicable Disease desk and in 2014, the ministry of health profiled 3C activities and success in their pull out. 3C is always invited on International days like World health day and World Cancer day to talk about 3C and to recruit more schools UCCF has graduated 7 AVANTE Guards chapters-avante Guards focus on fundraising and innovating project that improve our awareness especially for the 3C Programs. while 3C focus on awareness in schools Carried out two fundraising campaigns-last year held a fashion show by the Namagunga- Hope Flag Campaign at the National theatre and 11.5million shillingswas raised. This year in May, we supported another chapter to organize A Dance break cancer show at the National Museum to raise funds for patient support activities. 3C program has reached 50,000 youth in schools, opened15 active clubs in 15 schools. Registered four new schools in May Visited other schools in Gulu including Sacred Heart and Gulu High, SorotiTeso College Aloetand SerereKidetok Girls Held a swimming gala in Seeta High, 7 schools participated in this event.

7 A talk on project planning and management The UCS Programs Director noted that in cancer control project planning and management, it is important for all actors to take note of the 9 World Cancer Declaration targets for comprehensive cancer control. These targets include; StrengthenHealth Systems for effective cancer control, Ability to measure the burden and impact of cancer plans in all countries, Reduce exposure to cancer risk factors, Universal coverage of HPV, Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer, Universal access to screening and early detection to cancer, Improved access to services across the cancer care spectrum, Universal availability of pain control and distress management, improve education and training of health care professionals. Patrons should take advantage of these targets for awareness creation. Stages of Project Planning and Management 1. Project initiation-developing an idea(set up phase). This involves conceptualization of an idea 2. Project planning-identifying specific objectives of the project, develop communication tools, develop a budget activity schedule, examine risk factors and mitigation plan, develop tools to measure the success of the objectives, develop a project evaluation plan 3. Execution of the project-this is the implementation of the planned activities, resource mobilization strategies and allocations 4. Close of the project-project review and evaluation, develop project report Patrons were advised to design simplified project tools for successful planning and execution. These projects should take into account that students are not derailed from studies, but have this as extracurricular activities which in a long run benefits students in developing their skills in projects management and planning.

8 Sustainability of 3C in schools In finding ways of how to sustain 3C in schools, it is prudent to identify the challenges that patrons are currently faced with as they advance the 3C agenda. The following were the challenges as observed from majority of the schools; Limited information on cancer for awareness creation in schools Limited resources especially finances to implement some of the 3C activities Changing school programs and school bi-laws restricting children from joining and participating in clubs Limited support from administrators and staff Low interest from some 3C school leaders. Communication gap between patrons. Competition from other school clubs Limited support from the Schools leadership

9 Proposed sustainability interventions for the above challenges are as follows; 1. Competition from other clubs Create collaborations with very active clubs and work with their patrons and leaders to integrate activities of 3C in their plans. E.g, map out health clubs and debating clubs and incorporate 3C activities. Use all possible avenues to publicize 3C.E.g, Include 3C activities is schools publications and in the media 2. Limited information for cancer awareness UCCF should lobby for support from the ministry of education and ministry of Health to spear head the development of some awareness activities and materials Provide refresher trainings for patrons to equip them with information on cancer as a way of aiding their efforts to create awareness in schools Develop a site for patrons to subscribe to get information Develop a 3C syllabus for patrons to follow Develop videos and drama kits for schools Develop posters for schools and these can focus on common types of cancer 3. Limited resources Develop a 3C magazine which includes write ups from all participating schools and sell them especially during school days Organize fundraising events with active participation of Old Boys and Old Girls Encourage schools to pay membership fees 4. Changing school programs and calendars Patrons should develop 3C planned activity schedule and send to school administration early to ease planning Patrons should map out important school days 5. Low interest from school administration and staff Administration buy-in and this includes involving teachers and staff in 3C activities Patrons should ensure that school administrations appreciate that co-curricular activities are policy according to the Ministry of Education Patrons and UCCF should cultivate good working relationships with the school administrators and Head Teachers 6. Communication gap between patrons Constant networking amongst schools that have 3C. Peer to peer support Create a whatsapp and mailing group Develop and share periodic reports Develop a robust communication mechanism 7. Low interest from 3C leaders Motivate members of 3C by awarding them certificates Motive patrons by giving them cards which enable them access services at the UCI easily.

10 Next steps/action points UCCF to fast track development of information materials for the schools Patrons to develop activities and budgets UCCF to prepare concepts and proposals as a fundraising tool for the 3C activities UCCF to Develop robust strategy of fundraising targeting corporate organizations Develop magazines documenting 3C activities and these can be sold during school days UCCF to develop cards for patrons to ease their access to services at Uganda Cancer Institute as a motivation UCI to develop a fact sheet on frequently asked questionsto be used by patrons for awareness creation. UCCF to continue organizing national events that bring together most schools and young for better engaging activities. Patrons meeting to discuss the next election meeting

11 Nations College Awareness tips were given in every morning assemblies Proposed to launch 3C club but the UCCF was not available-an appropriate date should be agreed upon between UCCF and 3C Nations College Proposed to visit the Uganda Cancer Institute but awaiting advise from UCCF Namilyango College Tree planting-over 250 trees were planted within the school, good environment better health Held Music Dance and Drama competition Every Friday during the morning assembly, one of the members from 3C gives a talk on cancer Published an article in the school magazine Visited nearby Primary Schools including; St. Theresa, Namilyango High Gramma, Namilyango boys and St. Cleverly to introduce the idea of 3C Had a collaboration with a school from the United Kingdom-The school visited Namilyango and donated balls with the aim of bringing the students together Planning for Sports day and will take advantage of this day to give a talk on cancer
