1 The Verbal Express NEWSLETTER FOR VERBAL EXPRESSIONS TOASTMASTERS CLUB #5736 A CONSISTENTLY PRESIDENTS DISTINGUISHED CLUB AREA 44 PLAINS DIVISION DISTRICT 50 VOLUME 18 - NUMBER 5 - JULY 2011 Meeting Every Thursday from 11:45am to 1:00pm in Room D2S-R25 Ericsson Richardson Lakeside Blvd, Richardson TX the 3-Story Building w/barrel top Celebration, Installation & Education June 30 th was not just the last meeting of the term, it was the last meeting of this Toastmasters year, and the last meeting of the Distinguished club plan AND the last meeting for our Jan-June club officers to be in power. And, because this was a special meeting, we did not use our typical meeting format. We began late (well, that part was rather our typical meeting format). We had guests, dignitaries, pizza, a veggie tray and king cake!! Let us rejoice! (which was cleverly selected as Word of the Day). all in the same meeting! By David Turner Area 44 Governor Karen Bragg-Mathews inducts new Officers for July-Dec 2011 (L-R: Area 44 Governor Karen Bragg-Matthews, Club President Carolyn Cartwright, VP MEM Julio Zhang, VP PR Uttara Sawant, Lead S@A David Turner, Club Secretary Gerald Dunn, Not pictured Treasurer Rob Nyberg, VP ED LaToya Wright) We had two very distinguished visitors - including Danni Babik, District 50 Lt. Gov. Education & Training, and Karen Bragg-Matthews, Incoming Area 44 Gov, several other visitors who came to observe, 3 brand new guests and a few rarely seen club members who chose to make their appearances: welcome back Calvin & Linda! Club President Carolyn Cartwright started the celebration with recognition by presenting Spirit Awards to the club members who put together the BCAM Executive Panel event. Then Danni Babik officially presented our club with the king-cake explaining its importance as part of a PARTY and that for us it was an award from the district for getting both leadership DCP points completed by March 1! AND then Karen Bragg-Matthews inducted our new club officers! Even more fun began when Nancy Bateman came on as Toastmaster and trainer. She invited continued on page 3 July 2011 Page 1 The Verbal Express
2 The President s Page Verbal Expressions, you are a vibrant and happening club! Shannon Presley, a member of our club for only 2 weeks, has already delivered 2 speeches. Furthermore, with the help of all of you, your President has obtained her Advanced Leader Silver award providing 1 DCP point towards the club s next President s Distinguished award! What could be better? Well get ready because this term is going to the most fun ever! Imagine two hilarious contests, tall tales and humorous speech, back to back. Who needs to do sit-ups when we ve got laughter to help you tone your stomach muscles? Unbelievable as it seems, there is more. Your club officers have another executive panel discussion in the works where there will be lots of leadership opportunities for you, and with the re-branding of Toastmasters International, our club will be holding a never-beforeattempted-here silent auction of the old memorabilia. It is promising to be a fantastic term. Come have fun with us! I look forward to seeing you every Thursday. BRING A FRIEND or COWORKER! Carolyn Cartwright ACB, ALS Verbal Expressions Club President Distinguished Club Plan for Verbal Expressions Toastmasters for the DCP plan year July 2011 through June 2012 Data as of July 15, Two CC: YOU? 2. 3 continued from page 1 Gerald Dunn, with the help of Google, provided the Thought for the Day about freedom from fear being the only real freedom. Let us rejoice in the wonder that is Google! Following that we launched right in to a workshop Clever Ways to Answer ANY Table Topics Question! Nancy provided valuable information to assist us with ways to approach answering Table Topics questions or any impromptu speaking opportunity. We were to keep two goals in mind: 1) EVERY question is MY question. 2) It's just a little tiny speech. Even with our compressed meeting format there was time for eager volunteers to participate and demonstrate how to put into action the various strategies provided. (I rejoiced that I did not have to do this myself, but look forward to being able to use these strategies in the future, as I make EVERY question MY question.) I thought the workshop was both useful, and a lot of fun. Overall, however, I think this was an enjoyable and successful meeting. We even had two new members sign up welcome John Durrett & Shannon Presley which gave us more things to rejoice! David Turner joined Verbal Expressions in May and has contributed to the Club in several important events such as last term s Membership Drive. He currently serves as Lead Sergeant At Arms on the Club s Executive Board. New Leadership Team! Excellent energy from members and guests New Area44 Governor Karen Bragg-Matthews Club visit! Celebration of accomplishments of previous term Fun Table Topics Session! Even more FUN Improv warmup session!! Free pizza and King cake! Danni Babik, District 50 Lt. Gov. Education & Training answering a fun Table Topics question July 2011 Page 3 The Verbal Express
4 Getting into the Spirit of Toastmasters! The spirit award is for those new members who have gone above and beyond in their commitment and enthusiasm for our club. The members who were presented these to are not necessarily new members, but they deserve it. Club President Carolyn Cartwright presented these spirit awards on June 30 to those who worked on the executive panel discussion committee. Together, this team of people 1. Created a vision of what they wanted to happen 2. Put a package together for all the execs 3. Put on the show for over 50 people Each of the members contributed in an unique way to make the Club s special event a huge success! Julio Zhang Julio took on the big task of creating pre-event slide package to give executives a heads-up on our process before the meeting. He also managed to get OREO cookies for the event. Club members proudly showing their Spirit Award ribbons (L-R: David Turner, Nancy Bateman, Carolyn Cartwright, Simon Cornelius, Julio Zhang, Gerald Dunn) were welcomed to the meeting. Simon Cornelius Simon had the perilous job timing the executives during the meeting, organizing room setup with facilities, pumping in the music as the Executives and guests Nancy Bateman Nancy facilitated the panel discussion, drove to Rowlett 4 times to get promotional materials, created the slide package that ran before the meeting, the pre- and post-event flyers, and the eye-catching ad for E/// TV. Gerald Dunn Gerald proof-read Julio s slides, gave valuable feedback and provided great questions for the executives. The best one was when is Gerald getting a promotion? David Turner David invited Kevin Marcellus, primed meeting room setup, excellent proofreading of slide package. As a consequence of Kevin s participation, Kevin was so impressed with our event that he offered to propose to Rima and her cabinet that they spend their ½ hour lunch with us during their Ops Reviews in November.
