1 Hopeful Hearts is a non-profit charity run by local Chinese and expatriate volunteers with the aim of raising funds to provide lifesaving heart surgeries for children from low income Chinese families. The charity was created in 2003 in Nanjing and we have additional teams in Chengdu (created in 2009) and Guangzhou (created in 2012). Across the 3 regional teams, Hopeful Hearts has now supported 500 cases! In 2017 the Hopeful Hearts Guangzhou team supported 29 children- a new record for us! We currently have partnerships and receive cases from the Women and Children s Hospital, Guangdong and the Provincial Hospital of Guangdong, both specialists in cardiac surgery. Many of the cases we receive are critical by the time they reach us and surgery is often arranged within a matter of days. We see and hear many moving stories of families in need, without work, with multiple health issues or disabilities in the family, often in debt that will take a lifetime to repay. The families are desperate to save their children but have nowhere else to turn. Members of our team visit and interview every family that applies to us for help, to ascertain if, and to what extent we should fund their surgery. In this way we decide exactly how our funds are spent. Hopeful Hearts raises funds from a wide variety of social and community events. Donations are our main source of revenue. We receive generous donations from community social groups such as GWIC, International and local schools, local businesses as well as individuals. We organize social events including parties, fundraisers and tours. We attend bazaars and fairs selling Hopeful Hearts merchandise. 3 WILBER FOUNDATION Wilber Foundation is a charity registered with the bureau of Civil Affairs of Guangzhou Municipality in 2013 by Mr. Sonny Wilber Doo. The charity is formed to support the well-being of underprivileged children including orphans, the disabled, the autistic and those who are in need of urgent medical care. Wilber Foundation also supports the growth and development of these children by providing them with education assistance and guidance. 4 1- What is the CDC Mission and aim? Our main goal aims at allowing a maximum number of children from the Miao, Dong and Yao ethnic minorities (girls for the most part), to have access to primary school and to carry on, for the brightest ones, with higher secondary school then university. Other actions consist to help to furbish and equip some schools and dormitories, finally also help to preserve local traditions as cultural buildings, music and arts. 2- How many girls/families has CDC helped thus far? In 2017, more than 5000 children were helped to attend primary school classes to university. Since 1998, when Françoise Grenot-Wang introduced the school sponsoring and created the association, volunteers and great dose of enthusiasm did the trick to allow the schooling of children around Danian in Guangxi and Guizhou. 3- What are the charity's future plans? 2018 is a great year for the association since it is celebrating its 20th anniversary and especially because since January we are officially recognized as an NGO by the Chinese authorities. By the way, we will try to put in place a more effective communication and reinforce the links already present between the sponsors and the children. 5 Guangzhou Huiling is a non-govermental, non-profit,grassroots organization, founded in Guangzhou Huiling consists of nine different subsidiaries including Kindergarten,Primary school, Youth Training Center, Sheltered Workshop, Adult care Center,Farm,90 Studio, Emmaus Bakery and Family Homes. These subsidiaries provide service to over 400 mentally disabled children and adults. In order to meet the increasing needs of people with mental disabilities and their families all over China, Huiling has opened other service entities in Beijing, Xi'an, Xining, Tianjin, Changsha, Chongqing, Lanzhou, Wanzhou, Qingyuan and so on. Since Huiling does not receive regular financial support from Chinese government, over 60% of everyday expenses is donated by social contributions. At the same time, we also work to help the mentally disabled people from impoverished households by seeking financial support from enthusiastic donors, in order to help them receive the services they need. We firmly believe that people with mental disabilities are respectable and should be accepted in society. They should enjoy the same rights and privileges as ordinary people. 6 FABRIC CREATIONS By Women With Disabilities In China HANDMADE.ETHICAL. BEAUTIFUL. Empowering women and transforming lives with a needle and thread. About us Hands of Hope creates uniquely designed products to support the livelihood of women with disabilities in China. At Hands of Hope, the women who stitch these fabric creations are transformed through the provision of housing, technical training and steady income. You can join us changing lives by purchasing our products. Our story Hands of hope started as a small sewing school where women affected by leprosy could learn marketable skills, enabling them to care for their families. The project began in the mid s when founder Ruth Winslow traveled throughout China with a medical team to provide treatment for people living in leprosy rehabilitation villages. During these visits, Ruth heard stories from numerous women who faced discrimination because of this disease. Many of them where illiterate, with very few skills, and left without any means to provide for themselves or their children. Heartbroken by this reality, Ruth started a sewing school as a place where this women could gain self-esteem and learn new skills. Through this project, more than 100 women were taught to sew and started home businesses or found work in nearby factories. Eventually, the project developed into the micro-enterprise known as Hands of Hope. 7 Freeleaf is a social enterprise founded in June 2016 that provides employment to at-risk, abused and exploited women in Asia. Our goal is to help women discover their intrinsic value and give them the tools and confidence to stand firm and achieve their dreams.
