This User Guide describes the uses of the TFI test ad explais how it is admiistered. 5 Overview The TFI Test The Test de fraçais iteratioal (TFI) is a Frech laguage proficiecy test for people whose ative laguage is ot Frech. It measures the everyday Frech laguage skills of people workig i a iteratioal eviromet. A stadardized test that measures Frech proficiecy o a sigle, cotiuous scale, the TFI test is for laguage learers of all levels, regardless of occupatio or educatioal backgroud. Test scores idicate how well people ca commuicate i Frech with others i daily life ad workplace settigs. The test does ot require specialized kowledge beyod that of a perso who uses Frech i everyday work activities. Part I: Listeig Comprehesio. (Compréhesio Orale) The Listeig Comprehesio part of the test cosists of 90 questios ad has a audio compoet. This test part is divided ito three sectios. Test takers liste to a variety of questios ad aswers, short dialogues ad talks recorded i Frech, ad they aswer questios based o what they hear. The Listeig Comprehesio part of the test takes approximately 42 miutes. Sectio I: Questios Sectio II: Dialogues Sectio III: Coversatios Part II: Readig Comprehesio. (Compréhesio Écrite) The Readig Comprehesio part of the test cosists of 90 questios preseted i writte format i the test booklet. This test part is divided ito three sectios. Test takers read a variety of materials ad respod to questios based o what they read. They have 68 miutes to complete the Readig Comprehesio part of the test. Sectio IV: Text Completio Sectio V: Icomplete Seteces Sectio VI: Sigle Passages Test takers respod to each test questio by markig the letter (A), (B), (C), or (D) o a separate aswer sheet. Although the actual testig time is approximately oe hour ad fifty miutes, additioal time is eeded to allow test takers to complete the biographical questios o the aswer sheet ad to respod to a brief questioaire about their educatio ad work history. Therefore, approximately two ad oe-half hours should be allowed to take the test. Preparig to Take the TFI Test The TFI test is ot based o the cotet of ay particular Frech course, but rather o the test taker s Frech laguage proficiecy the overall ability to commuicate i Frech. Improvemet i laguage proficiecy may take some time ad is geerally achieved through a combiatio of practice ad study. Before takig the TFI test, it is importat to become familiar with the test format ad how to mark the aswers o the aswer sheet. Attetio ca the be focused o the questios themselves, rather tha o the format. The Examiee Hadbook provides iformatio about the test ad familiarizes test takers with the cotet ad format of the test so that they will be more at ease whe takig the test. I additio, test takers are ecouraged to immerse themselves i the laguage as frequetly ad i as may ways as possible if it has bee some time sice they have had cotact with Frech. 7 Admiistratio of the TFI Test Where is the Test Offered? The TFI test is available throughout the world. Testig ca be arraged through corporatios or other orgaizatios that ask employees or job applicats to take the TFI test. I additio, may laguage-traiig programs ad schools offer TFI testig. If testig is ot available through a particular orgaizatio, cotact the local ETS Preferred Vedor to fid out whe ad where to take the test. How Ofte Ca the TFI Test Be Take? Twety-eight days should lapse before a test taker retakes the TFI test. If a test taker takes the test more tha oce i 28 days, the test will ot be scored ad a refud will ot be offered. Test takers must pay agai to take the test oce 28 days have passed. Test Security I admiisterig a worldwide testig program, the TFI program ad its local ETS Preferred Vedors cosider the maiteace of security at testig ceters to be of utmost importace. To offer score users the most valid ad reliable measuremets of Frech-laguage proficiecy available, the TFI program cotiuously reviews ad refies procedures to icrease the security of the test before, durig, ad after admiistratios. Test Ceter Procedures The followig procedures ad regulatios apply durig the etire test sessio, which begis whe test takers are admitted to the test ceter ad eds whe they leave the test ceter. No test taker will be admitted after test materials have bee distributed. Books, dictioaries, papers, otes, rulers, calculators, watch alarms, mobile phoes, listeig devices, recordig or photographic equipmet, highlighters or aids of ay kid are ot allowed i the testig room. Paper of ay kid is ot permitted i the testig room. Test takers may ot mark or uderlie words i the test book or make otes i the test book or o the aswer sheet. Test takers must have the supervisor s permissio to leave the testig room. Ay lost time caot be made up. There is o scheduled break durig the TFI test. If a test taker must leave the testig room, s/he is required to give the supervisor idetificatio documet(s) before leavig the room. It will ot be possible to make up the time lost. At the coclusio of the test, the test taker will be required to retur the test book ad aswer sheet to the test supervisor. Dismissal from Test Sessio A test admiistrator/supervisor is authorized to dismiss a test taker from a test sessio, or scores may be caceled, due to violatios such as, but ot limited to, the followig: Attemptig to take the test for someoe else or havig someoe else take the test o the test taker s behalf Failig to provide acceptable idetificatio Obtaiig improper access to the test, a part of the test, or iformatio about the test Usig a telephoe or cell phoe durig the test sessio Usig ay aids i coectio with the test, such as mechaical pecils, pes, pagers, beepers, calculators, watch calculators, books, pamphlets, otes, rulers, highlighter pes, stereos or radios with headphoes, cell phoes, watch alarms (icludig those with flashig lights or alarm souds), stopwatches, dictioaries, traslators, ad ay hadheld electroic or photographic devices Creatig a disturbace (disruptive behavior i ay form will ot be tolerated; the test admiistrator/supervisor has sole discretio i determiig what costitutes disruptive behavior) Attemptig to give or receive assistace, or otherwise commuicate i ay maer with aother perso about the cotet of the test durig the admiistratio or before dismissal of the test sessio Removig or attemptig to remove test cotet, scratch paper, or otes relatig to the test cotet from the test ceter. 8 Admiistratio of the TFI Test (cotiued) The local ETS Preferred Vedor reserves the right to take all actio icludig, but ot limited to, barrig the test taker from future testig ad/or cacelig scores for failure to comply with test admiistratio regulatios or the test admiistrator/supervisor s directios. If scores are caceled, they will ot be reported, ad test fees will ot be refuded. Idetificatio Requiremets All test takers must read Part 1. Depedig o whether the testig is withi or outside the test taker s coutry of citizeship, s/he must also read either Part 2 or Part 3, as appropriate. Part 1: Iformatio for All Test Takers Test takers must have acceptable ad valid ID with a sigature ad photograph to be admitted to a test ceter. Idetificatio requiremets are strictly eforced. It is the test taker s resposibility to read ad uderstad the istructios ad requiremets. Test takers who arrive at the test ceter without the required idetificatio will ot be admitted by the test admiistrator, caot take the test, ad will forfeit their test fee. Whe registerig for the test, test takers must use exactly the same ame that appears o the primary idetificatio documet they will preset at the test ceter. Test takers must provide the etire first (give ame) ad etire surame (family ame). They MUST NOT register uder a ickame. If the ame show o a test taker s primary idetificatio does ot match the ame used at registratio, that test taker will ot be permitted to take the test. Oly misspelligs of a test taker s ame ca be corrected at check-i. NAME CHANGES WILL NOT BE MADE. If a test taker s ame has chaged for ay reaso, icludig marriage, s/he must still preset primary idetificatio i the ame uder which s/he registered, or the test taker will ot be permitted to take the test. If the test ceter admiistrator questios the ID a test taker presets, that idividual will be required to preset additioal proof of idetity. If positive cofirmatio caot be made, the test taker may be refused admissio to the test ceter ad forfeit the test fee. Admittace to the test ceter does ot imply that a test taker s form of idetificatio is valid or that the test taker s scores will be reported. Test ceter persoel will check each test taker s idetificatio before assigig seats at the test ceter. The admiistrator will also check the sigature to verify that the test taker is the perso i the photo idetificatio. Acceptable Primary Idetificatio Documets Passport with photograph ad sigature Driver s licese with photograph ad sigature State idetificatio with photograph ad sigature Natioal idetificatio with photograph ad sigature Military idetificatio with photograph ad sigature Acceptable Secodary Idetificatio Documets If a test taker s primary idetificatio is missig either a photograph or sigature, oe of the followig secodary IDs ca be used to meet the photograph or sigature requiremet. Oe of the followig secodary IDs must be preseted i additio to your primary ID. Secodary IDs that ca be used to meet the photograph or sigature requiremets are: A govermet-issued idetificatio documet that has ot expired, icludig, but ot limited to, passport, driver s licese, state idetificatio, atioal idetificatio, or military idetificatio. (There are some exceptios: see Uacceptable Idetificatio Documets below.) 9 Admiistratio of the TFI Test (cotiued) Part 2: If Testig WITHIN Your Coutry of Citizeship Test takers withi their coutry of citizeship eed oly oe form of primary ID if the primary ID documet cotais a photograph ad sigature. Please see the list of acceptable primary ID documets (see Part 1). However, if the test admiistrator has ay cocers about the primary ID documet, the test taker will be required to preset a secodary ID from the list (see Part 1). If the primary ID does ot cotai the test taker s sigature, that idividual must either sig the documet or preset a additioal ID from the list of secodary idetificatio documets. The secodary ID caot be expired ad must cotai a recet, recogizable photograph ad the test taker s sigature. Part 3: If Testig OUTSIDE Your Coutry of Citizeship Idividuals testig outside their coutry of citizeship MUST PRESENT THEIR PASSPORT as the primary idetificatio documet (citizes of Europea ad Schege Zoe coutries, see special requiremets below). If a test taker does ot meet this requiremet, test scores may ot be reported. If a test taker s passport is ot writte i Eglish laguage letters, that idividual must also preset a additioal ID from the list of secodary idetificatio documets (see Part 1) that is writte i Eglish ad cotais a recet, recogizable photo. If a test taker s passport does ot cotai that idividual s sigature, the test taker must either sig the passport or preset a additioal ID from the list of secodary idetificatio documets (see Part 1). Disabilities The TFI Program ad its local ETS Preferred Vedors, i respose to requests from idividuals with disabilities, will make special arragemets with test ceter supervisors, where local coditios permit, to admiister the TFI test with accommodatios. Amog the accommodatios that ca be provided are exteded testig time, breaks, a test reader, a sig-laguage iterpreter, other aids customarily used by the test taker, large prit, ad o-audio (without oral stimulus) versios of the test. All requests for accommodatios must be approved i accordace with TFI policies ad procedures. These procedures are located o the TFI web site at Testig Irregularities Testig irregularities refers to irregularities i coectio with the admiistratio of a test, such as equipmet failure, improper access to test cotet by idividuals or groups of test takers, ad other disruptios of test admiistratios (atural disasters ad other emergecies). Whe testig irregularities occur, ETS ad its local ETS Preferred Vedors give affected test takers the opportuity to take the test agai as soo as possible without charge. Europea Uio/Schege Zoe Coutries Idividuals takig the test withi a Europea Uio or Schege Zoe coutry outside their ow coutry may use a valid atioal or Europea idetity card. The preseted documet must cotai a recet, recogizable photograph, date of birth, ad sigature of the test taker. If a test taker s form of idetificatio is ot i Frech-laguage letters ad the test admiistrator caot read the laguage i which it is writte, that idividual may ot be allowed to take the test. If the official ID does ot cotai the test taker s sigature, a additioal documet must be preseted from the list of secodary idetificatio documets (see Part 1) that does cotai that idividual s sigature. 10 TFI Test Results Scorig Procedures & Reports Scaig Each test taker uses a pecil to mark aswers to the TFI test questios o a scaable aswer sheet. Iformatio o the test taker s Frech-learig history ad use of Frech is also collected at the time of the test sessio. The aswers ad test taker iformatio are the read by a optical scaer ad recorded by the I-OPS system (Itegrated Operatios, Processig, ad Scorig system). The I-OPS system is a software package desiged to support ETS Preferred Vedor offices i scaig ad scorig TFI aswer sheets, as well as trackig the performace of idividual test takers, groups of test takers, cliets, ad coutries. Reportig After the tests have bee scored, the results are reported to the test taker s employer or school i the form of a Score Roster. The Score Roster is iteded for iteral use oly ad caot be used by idividual test takers as a idicatio of their official score. Cliets may choose to supply their test takers with a idividual Score Report or a Certificate of Achievemet. Additioal statistical reports, such as the results for all of a orgaizatio s test takers for a give time period, ca be produced by the ETS Preferred Vedor at the cliet s request. Score Roster Cliets receive a listig of all their test takers results i the form of a Score Roster. Each Score Roster icludes: Idividual scores (Listeig Comprehesio, Readig Comprehesio, ad Total scores) Scores from the most recet testig sessio (icludig average score, frequecy distributio, ad rage of scores) Scores obtaied i all testig sessios withi the same istitutio Scores withi the idustry with which the cliet is affiliated Scores withi the coutry with which the cliet is affiliated Score Report The scores a test taker receives are determied by the umber of questios aswered correctly. The umber of correct resposes o each sectio, Listeig ad Readig, is coverted to a umber o a scale of 5 to 495. Addig the Listeig Comprehesio ad Readig Comprehesio scores together gives a Total test score o a scale ragig from 10 to 990. The statistical procedure used to covert scores to a commo scale for each sectio esures that TFI sectio test scores ca be compared across differet forms of the test. There is o pealty for guessig or for wrog aswers. If a test taker takes the test through a employer or sposorig orgaizatio, the score is provided to that orgaizatio. It is the resposibility of the employer or orgaizatio to provide the test taker with their score. If a test taker takes the test idepedetly, they will receive their score report directly from the local ETS Preferred Vedor. Certificate of Achievemet The TFI Certificate of Achievemet is a ackowledgemet of a test taker s Frech proficiecy. The TFI Certificate of Achievemet is ot available through some Istitutioal Testig Program services. Cotact the local ETS Preferred Vedor for availability. The Certificate of Achievemet features: Test taker s ame Test taker s Listeig Comprehesio score, Readig Comprehesio score, ad Total test score Test date ad locatio Admiisterig orgaizatio Watermark o back Format suitable for framig Release of Test Results With some exceptios, depedig o local coditios, the TFI Score Report is set to test takers withi 5 busiess days of the test admiistratio. Passig the TFI Test The TFI test is ot the kid of test that oe passes or fails. Not every job or task requires the same level of Frech laguage proficiecy. The TFI test measures differet levels of Frech ability or proficiecy. It helps learers set goals ad measure their progress as their Frech improves ad eables people to demostrate what they curretly ca accomplish i Frech. The sigle, cotiuous scale also makes it possible for learers to set attaiable goals ad to measure their progress as their Frech improves. Some compaies use the TFI test to set their ow score stadards, based o the levels of Frech ecessary to carry out particular resposibilities. The statistical procedure used to covert scores to a commo scale for each sectio is desiged to esure that TFI Listeig Comprehesio ad Readig Comprehesio scores obtaied o differet admiistratio dates mea the same thig i terms of the level of Frech proficiecy idicated. A test taker who took several versios of the test withi a short period of time would obtai a umber of scores that ceter aroud a average value kow as the true score. Two-thirds of the time, the Listeig Comprehesio score would be withi 22 poits of the true score o the Listeig Comprehesio sectio, ad the Readig Comprehesio score would be withi 22 poits of the true score o the Readig Comprehesio sectio. Repeat Test Takers Test takers who take aother versio of the TFI test may obtai slightly differet scores from those they received the first time. A questio such as the followig may arise: How much of a differece must there be betwee two Listeig Comprehesio scores or betwee two Readig Comprehesio scores before I ca say that there is a real differece i my level of proficiecy? This questio ivolves two idepedet tests give at two differet times. The error of measuremet associated with the score obtaied from oe admiistratio is called the Stadard Error of Measuremet (SEM). The errors of measuremet associated with two admiistratios are called the Stadard Error of Differece (SEdiff ). The SEdiff for each of the TFI Listeig Comprehesio ad Readig Comprehesio sectios is about 32 scaled score poits. Aother questio that may arise is this: If a perso bega traiig with a Listeig Comprehesio score of 300 ad, followig traiig, received a score of 340 o a differet test form, has that test taker really improved i Listeig Comprehesio or is this icrease just a statistical fluke? To determie whether this is a true icrease i the TFI score, the test taker would costruct a bad of ± 1 SEdiff, or ± 32 poits, aroud the obtaied scores. I the example here, the test taker has truly improved because the post-traiig score falls outside the SEdiff (i.e., ). Usig this bad, it ca be said with 68 percet cofidece that the test taker s proficiecy level has truly icreased i the time betwee the two tests. Rescore Requests Test takers who feel their scores do ot accurately reflect their Frech-speakig abilities should cotact their ETS Preferred Vedor withi six moths of the test date. The ETS Preferred Vedor will rescore the aswer sheet ad give a secod score report. If a discrepacy is foud betwee the first score report ad the secod oe, the ETS Preferred Vedor will pay for rescorig the aswer sheet. The oly official reports of TFI scores are those issued by authorized local ETS Preferred Vedors or by ETS. If a orgaizatio admiisters a TFI test iterally, with ETS kowledge ad approval, it ca obtai ad keep score reports of that test. Scores obtaied from other sources should ot be accepted. If there is a questio about the autheticity of a score report, the questio should be referred to ETS authorized local ETS Preferred Vedors, who will the verify the accuracy of the scores ad determie whether a official report was issued. Normally Appropriate Use of TFI Scores The suitability of a TFI test for a particular use should be explicitly examied before usig test scores for that purpose. The KR-20 reliability idex assesses the extet to which all items measure the same costruct. The more homogeeous the test items, the more cosistetly the test takers will perform. The reliability of the TFI Listeig ad Readig Comprehesio sectio scores across all forms of our ormig samples has bee approximately Stadard Error of Measuremet Errors of measuremet occur whe a test taker s performace differs from oe occasio or test form to aother for reasos that may or may ot be related to the purpose of the test. A perso may try harder, be more (or less) tired or axious compared to some other occasio, have greater familiarity with the cotet of questios o oe test form tha o aother test form, or simply guess more questios correctly o oe occasio tha o aother. These reasos for icosistecy are geerally referred to as errors of measuremet. The Stadard Error of Measuremet (SEM) is a estimate of average differece betwee true scores ad obtaied test scores, ad is about 22 scaled score poits for each of the TFI Listeig ad Readig Comprehesio sectios. A test taker s true score could be estimated by ± 22 scaled score poits aroud the test score obtaied from oe admiistratio. For example, if a scaled score of 300 is obtaied o the TFI Listeig Comprehesio sectio, 68 percet of the time the true score will fluctuate betwee approximately 278 ad 322. Research Validity Studies I order to better establish the meaig of scores from the TFI as a measure of Frech laguage proficiecy, the TFI test was admiistered i 2007 to some 2,500 test takers i six coutries, alog with a self-assessmet ivetory to gather test takers perceptios of their ability to perform a variety of everyday laguage tasks i Frech. TFI scores related moderately to test taker self-reports (ca-do statemets) for both readig ad listeig tasks. The correlatios betwee TFI Listeig Comprehesio scores ad listeig ca-do reports were moderately high (.56 to.60). The correspodig correlatios betwee TFI Readig Comprehesio scores ad readig ca-do reports were somewhat lower (.43 to.53), but still statistically ad practically sigificat.
