1 Training Meeting on Networking Educational Networks June 2015, Vienna, Austria Vienna International Centre (VIC), Meeting Room M7 Information Sheet (L2-TR-50029) Background In September 2014, the (IAEA) General Conference, in resolution GC(58)/RES/13, acknowledged once more the utility of collaborations towards the development and adoption of integrated national and regional strategic planning approaches to strengthen university nuclear education programmes and make them sustainable. It requested the Secretariat to assist Member States, at their request, in their efforts to ensure the sustainability of nuclear education and training in all areas of the peaceful use of nuclear energy by taking advantage of the activities of regional education networks. Over the past years, the regional educational networks fostered by the IAEA, in close cooperation with other national and regional networks, such as the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN), the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC) in the United Kingdom and the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network (JN-HRD NET), have been exchanging information and experience as well as implementing actions to address common issues in the area of nuclear education. As recommended by the IAEA s Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Energy (SAGNE) in 2010, interregional activities are also being fostered. The first annual meeting to bring together all national, regional and interregional educational networks was held in December 2011 to share experience and resources, to discuss policies and strategies for nuclear education and training, and to exchange best practices and lessons learned. The last meeting was held in Vienna, Austria, in July 2014 to review the activities undertaken and the results achieved by regional and national networks for education in nuclear technology, to discuss common issues and potential solutions faced by nuclear education networks, and to develop strategies for enhancing collaboration between those networks. The participants of the first meeting in 2011 acknowledged that this was a useful forum and unique opportunity to share the experiences and achievements of each network, to review the remaining issues, to discuss common challenges and to agree on an updated action plan at the interregional level. They requested the IAEA to continue this series of meetings for networking the educational networks on a yearly basis. During the earlier meeting held in June 2013, the participants identified the topics on which they would work together and adopted an Action Plan for further cooperation, defining the areas of human resource development, outreach to schools and the society, and e-learning technology usage as first priority ones. During the 57th regular session of the IAEA General Conference in September 2013, a cooperation agreement was signed among the four regional educational networks from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America in order to implement the common Action Plan. Follow-up on its implementation is expected during this meeting.

2 Programmatic Context The Nuclear Knowledge Management Section in the IAEA s Department of Nuclear Energy is holding this meeting under project / of the IAEA s Programme and Budget for Venue and Participation The meeting will be held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), Vienna, Austria, from 15 to 19 June Designated representatives of the IAEA-fostered regional networks the Asian Network for Education in Nuclear Technology (ANENT), the Latin American Network for Education in Nuclear Technology (LANENT) and the AFRA Network for Education in Science and Technology (AFRA-NEST) as well as of the other regional and national networks for nuclear education are invited to attend the meeting. Senior professionals and academics from organizations that are participating in well-established nuclear related educational networks are also welcome to attend. Objectives of the Meeting The objectives of the meeting are to: Update participants on the IAEA s activities related to nuclear education and nuclear education networks, including the progress made in applying the new methodology for nuclear education planning at the national level known as the Education Capability Assessment and Planning (E-CAP) Framework, which is being piloted in the Africa region through AFRA-NEST; Provide an overview of activities undertaken and results achieved by the various regional and national networks for nuclear education; Follow up on the implementation of the Action Plan agreed at the last meeting on this subject held in July 2014; Familiarize the networks with the content and scope of the new IAEA coordinated research project on sustainable education in nuclear science and technology; Develop strategies and an updated Action Plan for the coming year; and Define the IAEA s role in further strengthening collaboration among these networks. The presentations given by the participants and the associated discussions should support the fulfilment of these objectives. Page 2 of 3

3 Deliverables The deliverables of the meeting are: A summary report of activities carried out by the IAEA and the regional and national networks for nuclear education; An updated Action Plan for cooperation among those networks for the coming year; and Meeting report, including recommendations on the assistance that the IAEA can provide to enhance collaboration among these networks.
