Specialist In Focus Dr E K Tan MBChB (Manchester), MRCOG (London) Consultant Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology National University Hospital Dr E K TAN obtained his basic medical degree from the University of Manchester in 1997, graduating with honors, and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist (MRCOG) in He completed his O & G training in the United Kingdom, and is an accredited specialist in UK and Singapore. During his specialist training in Scotland, Dr TAN also completed the RCOG Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSM) in Gynaecological Ultrasound imaging and Fetal Medicine at the prestigious Queen Mother s Hospital in Glasgow. He also obtained the joint Royal College of Radiologist / RCOG Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound Diploma, and is accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF UK) to provide first trimester screening for Down Syndrome through nuchal translucency assessment. He has also been an MOET (Management of Obstetrics Emergency and Trauma) instructor with the Advanced Life Support Group UK since 2003, and teaches obstetric emergencies life-saving skills in UK and Australia. Dr TAN currently works as a consultant O & G at National University Hospital. His special interests include: looking after high risk obstetric women during pregnancy and childbirth, looking after woman who favours normal and natural childbirth, pre-natal diagnosis (first trimester nuchal translucency

2 scans, fetal anomaly scans, growth assessment scans) and O & G ultrasound imaging. He has a special interest in medical education, and is currently the Program Director for the NUHS Residency Program (Obstetrics & Gynaecology). NUH NUH In the News NUH was in the news recently for our work following are the recent reports: Study on birth weight and obesity The Singapore Adult Metabolism Study (SAMS) led by Dr Eric Khoo (Consultant, Div of Endo), together with Principal Investigators A/Prof Lee Yung Seng (Senior Consultant, Div of Paeds Endocrinology and Diabetes) and A/Prof Tai E Shyong (Head and Senior Consultant, Div of Endocrinology), seeks to understand the link between birth weight and obesity, and in turn, an individual's response to weight loss programmes. New clinic treatment for prostate enlargement Dr Chua Wei Jin (Consultant, Dept of Urology) shares a new procedure, Transurethral Needle Ablation of Prostate Gland (TUNA), which is a minimally invasive procedure to treat Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). Symptoms of BPH include frequent urination, waking up frequently at night to urinate and a weak urinary stream. NUH is the first in South East Asia to offer this procedure in a clinic under local anaesthesia. The procedure takes about 30 mins and patients are able to go home the same day. We warmly welcome the following doctors as part of our team: Dr Jerry Ee (Consultant, Anaesthesia) obtained his MD from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, CA, USA in He obtained his Board

3 Certification in Anesthesiology in 2005 and Subspecialty Certification in Pain Medicine in 2006 from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Prior to joining NUH, Dr Ee was an Advanced Clinical Fellow at the Loma Linda University Anesthesiology Medical Group, USA. Dr Ryan Taylor (Paediatric Intensivist, UCMI) obtained his Doctor of Medicine from The Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) in He received his Board Certificate in Paediatric Medicine from The American Board of Paediatrics in 2007, after completing his residency at Miami Children s Hospital. Dr Taylor is active in voluntary work and has put his clinical knowledge to help those in need. His most recent stint was as a volunteer ICU physician in Peru. Dr Taylor was pursuing his postgraduate training in Paediatrics Critical Care at the University of California, LA, USA before joining NUH. Dr Anil Gopinathan (Associate Consultant, DDI) obtained his MBBS from the University of Pune, India in 2001 and his MD in Radiodiagnosis at the University of Mumbai, India in He obtained the FRCR (The Royal College of Radiologists, UK) in 2007, and completed his Advanced Specialist Training in Diagnostic Radiology, Singapore in May Prior to joining NUH, Dr Anil was an Associate Consultant at Changi General Hospital, sub-specialising in Interventional Radiology. Dr Lim Min Yu (Associate Consultant, O&G) obtained his MB ChB from the University of Glasgow, UK in 1994 and Diploma in the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care (DFFP), UK in He received his specialist training in O&G at the West of Scotland. He was conferred a Member of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK in 2005 and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training in Aug Prior to joining NUH, Dr Lim was a Locum Consultant at Crosshouse Hospital, Scotland since Aug His special interests are in Urogynaecology and Minimal Access Surgery. 5 Latest Upcoming Events GP CME NUH in 2011 Every year, as part of NUH s commitment to provide Continuing Medical Education (CME) for the private practitioners community in Singapore, our hospital organises a series of GP symposiums which are held fortnightly.
