3 MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANISING CHAIRMAN Look no further! Whether you are a surgical trainee at the start of a surgical career or a senior consultant with many decades of experience, this meeting is meant for you! Mentoring the modern surgeon is a special forum to recognize the evolution from a traditional surgeon-apprentice model to a modern multi-faceted approach to surgical training. With robotics, computerized skills lab, cadaveric lab, genetics and nano-technology, we are living in the dawn of a new era. Junior trainees need to know what is expected of them and how a foundation in basic surgical knowledge and skills is as important as internet education and computer assisted surgery. They need training in modern techniques and yet attain a firm grounding in open surgery. Senior surgeons have to know how minimally invasive surgery has transformed the surgical landscape and how advances in targeted therapy and genetics have led to a great leap forward in tumour management. They are expected to cope with a new generation of fastpaced, computer-savvy and sometimes disenchanted trainees. We have taken a bold step of integrating all the lectures into practical problem - based symposia; disregarding the division by specialty. The lectures are difficult to organize but we would have the answers to many practical problems we face daily. Recognizing that surgical workshops are effective educational tools, we have endeavoured to have more Pre-Congress workshops this time - catering to the need of trainees and surgeons in different specialties. Patient safety is now a topical issue in hospitals and we are baffled how a paramount issue like this had been overlooked for so long. We have included symposia on this issue to highlight the importance of organizing a safe surgical practice, not just performing surgery. Yes, it is the CHECK-LIST. So look no further. If there is one surgical meeting you want to attend this year, this is it! 5 COLLEGE OF SURGEONS MEDICAL STUDENTS SURGICAL SKILLS WORKSHOP AND COMPETITION Course Convenors: Associate Professor Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid Professor Dato Dr P Kandasami Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural workshop and competition last year, this year CSAMM will continue to organise a surgical skills competition among medical students from the medical schools in Malaysia in conjunction with its Annual Scientific Meeting in May This nationwide competition will give aspiring surgeons in their senior years of medical studies an opportunity to learn and compete in a range of surgical challenges, from suturing and knot-tying to performing some common procedures expected of a newly graduated resident doctor. There will be concept lectures and bench work demonstrations from experienced surgeons before the competition begins. Qualifying rounds for the competition will take place in the Advanced Surgical Skills laboratory of the UKM Medical Centre, from January to March 2014, with the finals scheduled in April Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the competition at the Gala Dinner in May Registrations are now open to all medical students from Malaysian medical schools in their final years of study. 15 ETHICON PRIZE 2014 The Ethicon Prize is an award for the best original scientific or clinical paper submitted by young surgeons in Malaysia for presentation at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. This award, started in 1989, will hopefully encourage a high standard of research and scientific presentations among young surgeons. The Prize Cash of RM2,000 donated by Ethicon. Regulations 1. The competition is open to all young surgeons and surgical trainees currently working in Malaysian hospitals who are below 35 years old as on 1 st January The work submitted may be from any surgical specialty, and it may take the form of clinical trials, surveys, retrospective studies, laboratory experiments or any other form of unpublished original work. 3. The bulk of the work which are submitted must be performed by the author himself/ herself even though he may have done the work in conjunction with other doctors or agencies either locally or overseas. However, the work must be carried out in Malaysia. 4. The author himself / herself should present the paper at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the College in May 2014 if the paper is selected for the finals. 5. The author must submit a signed declaration of his/her age, that his/her paper has not been published or presented elsewhere and the presenter has done most of the work. Procedure Completed papers are to be submitted online via the conference website at by 31 st March Full guidelines for the submission are available on the website. Privileges Authors whose papers are shortlisted for presentation shall be accorded the following privileges: 1. Complimentary registration 2. 16 ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES The Scientific Committee welcomes the submission of free communications. This could be in the form of Oral or Poster Presentations. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 st March Late submission will not be considered. Only abstracts from participants who have registered and paid their registration fees will be considered. Abstracts submission is to be done online at the conference website. For full submission instructions as well as guidelines, please log-on to SCIENTIFIC E-POSTERS You are kindly invited to submit scientific contributions to be presented during the meeting. As an alternative to the traditional printed paper poster, the CSAMM is pleased to introduce e-posters to the Annual Scientific Meeting E-posters will replace the printed posters and we are sure that you will share our enthusiasm for this innovative approach to poster presentation. As you will have uploaded your poster in advance there is no need to print and carry a poster to the meeting. This will save you the time and costs associated with printing and reduce the carbon footprint of the meeting. There will be monitors at the conference where all posters can be viewed. Abstracts may only be submitted using the electronic abstract submission system and must meet the following criteria: The abstract must not exceed 300 words Abstracts must be written in English, explained abbreviations may be used Graphs and Tables are not allowed All Abstracts must follow the required structure: Introduction Objectives Materials and methods Results Discussion Conclusions Successful entrants will be ed instructions on how to upload their e-posters for presentation after 15 th April Your e-poster should be produced using the PowerPoint Poster template which will be provided. The content of the presentation should be of a single slide. E-Posters of different dimensions may be skewed/stretched/truncated when displayed on the monitors at the Annual Scientific Congress unless they conform to the template. A maximum of ten E-posters adjudged to be of sufficient merit will be eligible for the top three prizes.
