Healthy Bodies Understand how vegetarians can maintain a healthy diet TASK 6: Complete the text and research sources of protein and iron for animal and plant based diets. egetarians are a group of people who for a variety of reasons may choose not to eat. A true vegetarian does not eat any living creature or product made from any part of living creatures. Reasons range from people who simply do not like the taste, to those who do not eat animal products because of ethical beliefs. Meat is a source of which is used for muscle and tissue growth and repair and iron which is used to transport in the blood stream. This means that vegetarians need to find another source for these nutrients in their diets. PROTEIN OXYGEN MEAT Animal Sources of Protein Plant Sources of Protein Animal Sources of Iron Plant Sources of Iron

Electricity and Energy Identify types of energy TASK 8: Complete the questions Look at the pictures below. All the objects are transferring energy. They are designed to transfer the energy mainly as movement (kinetic) energy, light energy, sound energy or heat energy. a Which objects transfer the energy mainly as kinetic energy? b Which object transfers the energy mainly as both sound and light energy? c Complete the sentences below. i A Bunsen burner transfers energy mainly as... energy, but it also transfers some as light energy. ii When a handbell rings, kinetic energy is transferred to... energy. Complete these sentences about types of energy, using the words below. In a loudspeaker, energy transfers along the connecting wires as... energy and out of the loudspeaker as... energy. When a drummer hits his drum kit,... energy in his sticks is transferred to... energy coming from the drum. In between, the drum skin transfers... energy.

Electricity and Energy Heat energy and materials TASK 9: Complete the crossword Across EclipseCrossword.com 2. Materials which let heat travel through them 6. The only heat transfer that can travel through a vacuum 8. A type of material which are good at conducting 9. Gas and liquid 10. The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas Down 1. Equipment used to measure temperature 2. Heat energy through vibrating particles 3. The temperature at which a solid turns to liquid 4. An area with no particles 5. How heat is transferred in fluids 7. What a hot gas or liquid will always do

Electricity and Energy Paying for electrical energy TASK 9: Complete the questions 1 The table below shows a record of the electrical devices used by a student over a period of 12 hours. Energy transferred (kwh) = power (kw) x time (h) a) Calculate the energy transferred by each device in kw h. Record the result of each calculation in the last column. Device Power (in kw) Time of use (in hours) Energy transferred (in kw h) Computer Heater Kettle Lamp Microwave oven Television b) Calculate the total energy transferred by all the devices. kw h c) The cost of electricity used by the student was 7.0 p per kw h. cost = energy transferred (kwh) x cost per kwh Calculate the cost of the total energy transferred.

2 a) Calculate the energy transferred, in kw h, when: i) A 1200 W (change to kw!) microwave oven is used for 0.3 hours. ii) A 2.0 kw electric heater is used for 2 hours. iii) A 0.6 kw hairdryer is used for 30 minutes (change to hours!). b) i) Calculate the total energy transferred in a). ii) Calculate the cost of the electricity used in a) if each kw h of energy transferred costs 8 p.

Electricity and Energy Types of heat transfer TASK 10: Fill in the gaps The 3 ways of transferring energy are, and radiation. Conduction This is the of heat energy through a from a hotter part to a part. This happens without any movement of the substance. A substance is a conductor of heat if the flows through it easily. An example of a good conductor is. A poor heat conductor is called an. An example of a good insulator is. Convection This is the transfer of energy through the movement of themselves. moves from areas to cooler areas. Liquids and can transfer heat by because the can move around unlike the particles in a solid. Radiation- This is the transfer of heat energy by. Radiated heat can travel through a, an empty space with no particles in it. This is why an ice cream will melt in the sun.

Electricity and Energy Electric circuits and symbols for components TASK 11: Complete the questions Diagram 1 Diagram 2 B A C 1. What components do the letters A, B and C represent? A... B... C What is the name given to the way the bulbs are arranged in Diagram 1? 3. What is the name given to the way the bulbs are arranged in Diagram 2?

4. In a series circuit, like in Diagram 1, how is the brightness of the first bulb affected when the second bulb is connected? Explain why this happens? 5. In a parallel circuit, like in Diagram 2, how is the brightness of the first bulb affected when the second bulb is connected? Explain why this happens? 6. Give one example of where we might find a series circuit in everyday life. 7. Give one example of where we might find a parallel circuit in everyday life. 8. Explain one advantage of using a parallel circuit rather than a series circuit. 9. Dan and Tom build a circuit like the one shown below. X (a) Name the component labelled X... (b) What are Dan and Tom using the component labelled X to measure?...

(c) Dan says, Ammeter 1 will show a lower reading than Ammeter 2 because the bulbs in the circuit use up the current. Tom says, Ammeter 1 will show the same reading as Ammeter 2 because current is not used up. Who is right?... (d) If Ammeter 1 has a reading of 1.5A, what reading will Ammeter 2 show?...a 10. (a) The circuit above contains 2 cells. Describe what would happen to the bulbs if Dan and Tom added another cell. (b) Describe how the reading on the reading on the ammeters would change if another cell was added to the circuit.

Electricity and Energy Current and oltage in circuits TASK 12: Complete the questions Look at this circuit diagram. Which lamps will be lit if: a only switch X is closed (on)? b only switch Y is closed (on)? X B c both switches X and Y are closed (on)? A Y C a b D c

Write the voltage shown by the voltmeter at each question mark Each cell has a voltage of 1.5 and all the lamps are exactly the same. A B?? C D M?? 0.5 These cells are all different. A 9? B M 8? 1 2 C 12 1 M? 4
