1 December 2017 Tips to Stay Healthy, Happy Through the Holidays The holiday season is in full swing. It s the time of year for joy, fellowship and hope. Sometimes all of the extra activities and get-togethers lead to overeating, derailed exercise routines, lack of sleep and increased feelings of stress. It doesn t have to be that way. There are a number of things you can do to get through the holidays without weight gain, exhaustion and stress. Here are some tips that will help from an article by Leana Wen, M.D. in the Huffington Post. Eat well. Although the holiday season presents plenty of temptations to overeat, there are ways you can eat healthy and well. Research shows it s worse to completely deprive yourself of high-calorie treats because it can set you up for binge-eating later. Instead, indulge in moderation. Eat smaller meals instead of saving yourself for one huge buffet. Eat something healthy before you head for that holiday gathering, so you will eat less at the event. Be careful of liquid calories, including alcoholic beverages. Stay active. Exercise is just as important during the holidays as any other time of the year. Try to be active at least four to five times a week, preferably with some aerobic exercise every day. Colder temperatures of winter offer opportunities for such things as ice skating or sledding, which can be great exercise. Prevent illness and injuries. Colds and the flu are most prevalent in the winter. Prevent them by washing your hands regularly and urging others to do the same. Stay warm by dressing in layers. Juggling work and the added commitments to friends and family may increase your feelings of stress. Extra expenses and interpersonal conflicts may also add to those feelings.
