1 Amazing Race to Amazing Health The theme for the 2013 Summer Success Program is the amazing race. Four separate games have been designed with this theme in mind. Topics covered during this session include snacking, beverages, fast food, screen time and physical activity and are based on activities from the book Catch Kids Club Healthy Habits and Nutrition Grades K-5. To coincide with our Amazing Race theme, each game will be named after a particular continent (South America, North America, Europe and Asia). At each game the children will have opportunities to win coins as they play the activity or activities. Children will have a total of 45 minutes to complete as many games as possible- and to collect as many gold coins as possible. At the end of the 45 minutes, children can cash in their gold coins for prizes.

2 Station 1: Snacking in South America Description: Participants will travel to South America and visit various countries. Each country will have an activity based on healthy snacking. Each country or activity corresponds to one color on the game wheel. There are six activities and each will take approximately 5 minutes to accomplish. Therefore, you may wish to set a time limit on the game to ensure children are able to have a chance to play the other games. Objectives: Students will learn 1. How to create healthy snacks made from two food groups 2. Why fiber is important and how to find it on the nutrition facts label 3. Healthy snack choices 4. Nuts are a good source of protein and a healthy snack 5. The names of various types of vegetables and that they can be a great snack 6. The importance of consuming low sodium foods more often and high sodium foods less often Game directions Preparation: 1. Lay out the game board and place the wheel atop the board. 2. Line up the 6 gift bags at the top part of the game board. 3. Place the corresponding directions for each country into the respective game bag. 4. Place any game pieces into their respective bag or if it is a worksheet- place it below the bag. 5. Make sure to have game tokens available before you start. Playing the game: 1. Spin the wheel on the game board and look at the color the red arrow points to once the wheel has stopped. 2. Find the country of that color on the map then look for the gift bag that has the name of that country on it. The instructor will open the bag and read the directions to the activity. Materials needed o Snacking in South America game board o Color wheel o Game coins o 6 gift bags labeled with the names of different countries o 6 instructional sheets to place in the corresponding gift bag o MyPlate visual o Fiber nutrition facts label cards ( 1 per child- there are 4 cards per page) o Matchu pitchu matchup worksheets ( 1 per child) o Sodium cards- 1 pack for each group of students ( suggested group size is 4 students)

3 Summary of game activities 1. RED - Two Pair Tango Objective: Students will learn How to create healthy snacks made from two food groups Children will work in pairs to come up with healthy snacks made from two food groups. Materials needed: MyPlate visual for children to reference 2. ORANGE - Finding Fiber in French Guiana Objective: Students will learn why fiber is important and how to find it on the nutrition facts label A brief overview of why fiber is important will be read to the children. Then each child will be given a nutrition facts label and will be asked to find where the fiber is located. Materials needed: Nutrition label cards ( 1 per child) 3. YELLOW - Machu Pitchu Matchup Objective: Students will learn about healthy snack choices Children will work to match up letters to symbols in order to find the hidden messages. The messages are different healthy snacks. 4. GREEN - Nuts about Brazil Objective 1: Children will learn that nuts are a good snack/ source of protein Objective 2: Students will learn healthy snack choices Students will be asked to figure out riddles in which a healthy snack is the answer to each riddle. There is a bonus question for an extra coin if the students can remember what food group a nut belongs to. 5. BLUE - Chillin in Chile Objective: Students will learn the names of various types of vegetables and that they can be a great snack As play on words, children will be asked what vegetable starts with the word Chile and the answer being Chile pepper. Children will then be asked to think of 7 different vegetables to eat as a snack. 6. PURPLE - Colombian Salt Mine Objective: Children will learn the importance of consuming low sodium foods more often and high sodium foods less often. Students will work in teams to organize snack foods from lowest to highest in salt. Materials needed: Sodium cards ( 1 pack for each group of students- suggested group size is 4 students per group)

4 Two Pair Tango Welcome to Argentina, where they dance the Tango! The tango and very healthy snacks have something in common. Do you know what it is? They both require pairs! Two people are needed to dance the tango, just like two food groups are needed to make a very healthy snack. Look at the picture of MyPlate. Each color on my plate represents a different food group. In order to get your gold coin listen to the following instructions. Find a partner and think of a healthy snack with your partner. It must be made up of TWO food groups. Once you have a healthy snack tell the instructor. The instructor will give you a coin only if your snack is healthy. You may have as many chances as you want to think of a snack, but remember you have other countries to visit and more coins to collect!

5 French Exposition- Finding Fiber French Guiana is a country the French found when they sailed over from Europe. While here you will also be finding something! It s called Fiber. We need fiber to keep us healthy. Fiber is found in healthy snacks, like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Each of you will be given a nutrition facts label. This label is found on every packaged food. Your job is to find the fiber in this product. Once you find the fiber you will receive a coin. You will receive a second coin if you can name a type of food where you can find fiber, but you only get one chance to name a food! I will repeat the directions once more. Pay attention so that you can receive your second coin!

9 Nuts about Brazil Welcome to Brazil! Did you know there is a snack food which has Brazil in its name? Does anyone know what it is called? A Brazil nut! Does anyone know what food group a nut belongs in? It belongs in the protein group. Protein helps to keep your body strong. It keeps your hair shiny and your skin healthy! Nuts, like Brazil nuts, can also be a great snack. To get your coin, listen, as a group, to the following riddles and work together to figure out the answers. The answer to all of these riddles will be healthy snacks. 1) I can eat slices of this vegetable. On the outside it is green and on the inside it is white with seeds. Pickles are made from it. What is it? ( Cucumber). 2) This snack is white and it comes from a cow. I can put it on my cereal, or add a little bit of chocolate to it. What is it? ( Milk) 3) I can eat this vegetable with dip. It is green and looks like small trees. What is it? ( Broccoli) 4) This snack is purple and made from dried grapes. What is it? ( Raisin) For an extra gold coin ** Nuts are part of what food group? ( Protein)

10 Chillin in Chile Welcome to Chile! Did you know that Chile is also the start of a name of a type of vegetable? Does anyone know the name of it? It is a Chile pepper! Before everyone gets a gold coin, as a group you must come up with 7 different vegetables that we can snack on! Ready? GO!

11 The hidden salt mine Welcome to the Cathedral of Zipaquirá in Colombia. Hidden below this cathedral is a giant salt mine. Just as this salt mine is hidden below the cathedral, salt can be hidden in the snacks we eat. Too much salt is not good for us. It is important that we choose snacks that are low in salt more often and snacks that are higher in salt less often. Another word for salt is SODIUM. To get your gold coin you must listen carefully to the following instructions. You will be broken up into 4 equal groups. Each group will be given snack cards. The amount of salt ( or sodium) in each item is listed on the bottom of each card. It is listed with the word milligram next to it. You and your group members are to line up these cards starting with the snack that is lowest in salt all the way up to the snack that is highest in salt. Completing this task will result in one gold coin. The first group to correctly complete this task, will receive an extra gold coin! Before you start, there is one question you all must answer. Should you eat foods that are high in salt MORE often or LESS often?
