Webinar Session Four ABC+D Approach Session 4: Taming the Troubled Tummy Copyright 2009 by Tree of Light Publishing Indigestion is Really Mis-digestion Foods Must Be Broken Down for Assimilation Fats Proteins Carbohydrates Lipase enzymes, bile salts Hydro-chloric acid, pepsin, protease Saliva, amylases Minerals Hydrochloric acid, fatty acids, amino acids Fatty acids, glycerol Amino acids Simple sugars Must be chelated for absorption The Digestive System A Journey Down the Gastrointestinal Canal
Digestion Begins in the Mouth Chew food thoroughly, especially starchy foods Saliva moistens food and begins starch digestion with ptyalin (an amylase enzyme) First Stop: Stomach Secretes hydrochloric acid and pepsin for protein digestion Highly acidic environment - ph of Ptyalin requires a ph between 6-7 Pre-Digestion Before secreting hydrochloric acid and pepsin, the stomach churns the food allowing time for enzymes from the saliva and enzymes present in the food to begin the digestive process This takes stress off the rest of the digestive tract, particularly the pancreas Enzymes in cooked food have been destroyed so this cannot take place Cultured dairy Yogurt Cheese Keifer Cultured soy (miso, etc.) Fermented beverages Cultured Foods Pickled Vegetables Sauerkraut Pickles (cucumbers) KimChi Fermented fish Sourdough High Enzyme Foods Hydrochloric Acid Extra virgin olive oil Raw honey Grapes Figs Avocados Dates Papaya Pineapple Kiwi Mangos Bananas Fermented Foods ph 2 Causes cells to swell and burst, releasing nutrients Converts pepsinogen to active pepsin enzyme that digests proteins Aids in preparing minerals like calcium, zinc, magnesium, copper, etc. for absorption Sterilizes food by killing microbes and parasites, protecting the body against infection
Esophageal Sphincter Ring of smooth muscle between esophagus and stomach Keeps food, acid and other gastric juices in stomach from backing up into trachea (windpipe) and esophagus Acid reflux or heartburn is caused by acid from the stomach getting past this sphincter Acid Reflux (GERD) Heartburn, Acid Indigestion GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) Creates inflammation from acid burning the esophageal lining Can cause Difficulty swallowing Chronic chest pain Ulcers Cancer Antacids About 6 million Americans routinely take antacids Antacids cause the stomach to produce more acid Calcium carbonate is not a good source of calcium Interfere with absorption of minerals and protein Foods That May Contribute to Acid Indigestion Alcohol Citrus fruits Garlic Milk Soda pop Spicy foods Tomato-based foods Fatty or greasy foods Chocolate Tea and coffee Other Factors Overeating Eating late at night Excess weight Dehydration (drink 30 minutes before meals) Hiatal Hernia The stomach and joining section of esophagus slide up into chest area through the hiatus (opening in the diaphragm). Can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus
Health Issues Associated with a Hiatal Hernia Acid reflux Gas and bloating Poor protein metabolism Insufficient HCl Shallow breathing Asthma Rapid heart rate Cardiac stress Thyroid irritation Difficulty swallowing General weakness Causes of a Hiatal Hernia Stress - particularly swallowed anger and frustration Pregnancy Excess weight Ileocecal valve problems causing frequent bloating Not paying attention to one s gut instincts Hiatal Hernia Remedies Find healthy ways to vent repressed anger and frustration Manual manipulation by yourself or a chiropractor or massage therapist Lobelia and warm water in the morning followed by getting your stomach to drop Dandelion flower essence Pyloric Sphincter Ring of smooth muscle between stomach and small intestine Chyme or partially digested food is squirted into duodenum Second Stop: Duodenum Duodenum First turn of the small intestine Secretions from the pancreas add enzymes for digesting fats, proteins and carbohydrates Bile from the gallbladder emulsifies fats to make them water soluble Stomach acid is neutralized and ph shifts to alkaline
Liver, Gall Bladder and Pancreas Pancreatic Enzymes Trypsin - Breaks protein fragments into amino acids Amylase - Finishes conversion of starches to sugars Lipase - Breaks fats (triglycerides) into fatty acids and glycerol (glycerin) Bile Liver produces bile for storage in the gall bladder Gallbladder secretes bile which emulsifies fats and neutralizes stomach acid Bile is used to eliminate toxins and cholesterol Nausea and Vomiting Peristalsis, which usually moves downward is reversed and tries to move upward to expel irritating substances Causes of Nausea and Vomiting Food allergies Food poisoning, bacterial Viral infections Medication Excess alcohol Chemotherapy Bulimia, migraines Motion sickness Morning sickness Intestinal obstruction Third Stop: Small Intestines Secretes additional digestive enzymes Absorbs nutrients from food
Small Intestines Alkaline environment Secrete additional enzymes Final digestion of carbohydrates, fat and proteins Absorb nutrients Intestinal Enzymes Peptidases - break protein fragments into amino acids Sucrase, maltase and isomaltase - break complex sugars into simple sugars Lactase - converts lactose (milk sugar) into simple sugars Lipase - breaks down triglycerides (fats) in to fatty acids and glycerol Causes of Gas & Bloating Produced by intestinal microbes feeding on improperly digested nutrients Lack of digestive enzymes or stomach acid Yeast infections Open ileocecal valve Lactose intolerance Ileocecal Valve A sphincter muscle between the small intestine and large intestine Prevents backing up of microorganisms in Large Intestine into the Small Intestine When it becomes inflamed it will swell and not close properly Ileocecal Valve Problems Can cause severe gas and bloating Increase autointoxication (absorption of waste products into the blood stream) Causes general muscle weakness Contributes to sinus problems and immune weakness Fasting Allows the digestive tract time to rest Helps microvilli repair themselves Reduces intestinal inflammation
Final Stop: Colon An organ of assimilation Large Intestine Absorbs water and some nutrients Contains microflora that synthesizes vitamin K and other nutrients Plays an important role in immunity Intestinal Flora Friendly bacteria that inhabit the colon About 2-3 pounds of assorted microbes can be found in the average person The right balance of microbes helps protect the body from infection Brain / Gut Connection Every known neurotransmitter present in the brain is present in the gut The gut is a nervous system organ in the body - has lots of nerves The gut has mechanisms to regulate body functions, independent from the brain Intestinal issues are involved in many mood disorders We ve reached the end of our journey
