1 5 th International Practical MIS Navigation Knee - and MIS Hip Training Course Welcome to Samedan Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, esteemed Colleagues, It is a great honor for me to invite you on behalf of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (CAOS) to the 5th International Practical MIS Knee Navigation & MIS Hip Training Course in Samedan/ St. Moritz, Switzerland. After a successful 4 th International Practical Knee Navigation and Hip Training Course last year, our goal this year is to even further improve the course. This event will have two focuses: (a) the Minimal Invasive Computer-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty MIS TKA, and (b) the Minimal Invasive Conventional and Computer-assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty MIS THA. Well-known European orthopedic surgeons will offer their expertise and will report about current concepts and future trends. Total Knee Arthroplasty TKA and Total Hip Arthroplasty are major issues and major challenges for the majority of orthopedic surgeons. The latest results on Minimal Invasive Joint Replacements indicate clear advantages in terms of early rehabilitation combined with excellent functional results. We believe that minimal invasive total joint arthroplasty will become a standard procedure in the future. However, proper training and education is a must to ensure the success of the MIS technique. Due to our partnership with Stryker and the great friendships with Prof. Dr. Fabio Catani and Dr. Andrea Ensini, from the Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli, Bologna/Italy, Prof. Dr. Michael Nogler and Dr. Hannes Behensky, from the Department of Orthopedic of the University of Innsbruck/Austria, PD Dr. Claudio Dora, from the Orthopedic University Hospital of Balgrist, Zurich/Switzerland and with the contribution of Prof. Dr. Markus Kuster, from the Kantonsspital St. Gallen/Switzerland, Ass. Prof. Rader Hart, General Hospital, Znojmo/Czech Republic and of Dr. Marco Schiraldi, from the Ospedale di Alessandria, Alessandria/Italy we will be able to share the enormous pooling of knowledge and experience of these experts. The scientific program will take place over two days. We will dedicate a fully day to Minimal Invasive Total Knee Replacement and a fully day to Minimal Invasive Total Hip Replacement. The first day, Friday 25 th of January, 2008, we will focus on MIS Total Knee Arthroplasty, with the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Fabio Catani, from the Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli, Bologna/Italy, Dr. Elmar Rakebrand, from Duisburg/Germany and of Prof. Dr. Markus Kuster, from the Kantonsspital St. Galllen/Switzerland. We will also have the great opportunity to listen to a guest lecture on Advances in Surgical Navigation by Prof. Lutz-P Nolte, PhD, from the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics and of MEM Research Center of the University of Bern/Switzerland. The program of the second day, Saturday 26 th January 2008, has been put together in collaboration with PD Dr. Claudio Dora from the Balgrist University Hospital of Zurich. This part of the course will focus on MIS Total Hip Arthroplasty. Experts such as Prof. Dr. Michael

2 Nogler and Dr. Hannes Behensky, from the Medical University Innsbruck/Austria, and Dr. Jérome Essig, from Toulouse/France, will talk about basic principles, concepts of total Hip Arthroplasties, and about the latest information and tricks regarding Minimal Invasive, Computer-Assisted Primary and Revison Hip Arthroplasty. There will be also a very interesting guest presentation on News and trends in tribology of TKRs and THRs by Dr. Robert Streicher, material scientists of Stryker Orthopedics. On the second day we will also have the possibility to give new instructional lessons and to practice on Non-image-based Navigated MIS Total Hip Arthroplasty. There will be an instructional live surgery on the first day to demonstrate the main steps of a MIS Computer-Navigated Total Knee Arthroplasty and that will show the experience that we have gained while using the Stryker Knee Navigation System. The second main pillar of this instructional course will be the two-day workshop on Total Knee Arthroplasty (day 1) and on MIS Total Hip Arthroplasty (day 2) comprising small working groups and experienced instructors in Knee Surgery. I hope that this year s course will again satisfy your requirements. Its success will be based upon the pooling of knowledge and experience of the high-level scientific speakers and the attendees.
