Course Description This course is designed to expand upon a student's present knowledge and understanding of normal anatomy through developing spatial relationships of organs, vessels, bones, muscles, and connective tissues. Frequency: Every Fall. V. Learning Outcomes 1) Calculate wavelength, frequency and period for various transducers. 2) Calculate reflection coefficients for various tissue impedances 3) Determine decibel ratios for various ultrasound intensities 4) Explain issue harmonics 5) Calculate refraction for various angles and impedances 6) Explain how annular, phased, linear sequenced, and two-dimensional transducers function and the advantages and disadvantage of each 7) Explain how beam forming occurs and calculated the near field length for transducers with varying frequencies and diameter sizes 8) Explain and calculate the Doppler shifted frequencies given variable parameters 9) List and define various methods of color Doppler; 10) Explain in depth the biological effects of ultrasound, how it is monitored 11) Explain the hemodynamics of blood flow in arteries and veins in both normal and pathologic states. 12) Identify and explain common imaging, Doppler and color flow artifacts 13) Describe the methods and techniques of ultrasound system performance. Grading Criteria Your final grade is determined by your performance on a number of different tasks: Final Course Grade: Quizzes and assignments 25% Group presentation 15% Midterm Exam 20% Mock Exam 15% Final Term Exam 25% TOTAL 100% Final Grade: Students must earn a grade of "C" (74-76) to pass the course. Grading Scale: The grading policy is documented in the University Handbook (what grade reflects an "A", "B", etc.). Alpha Grade Scale Percentage A A B B B C C C D D F and below TIMELINE FOR FEEDBACK FROM FACULTY Faculty members will respond in a maximum of 48 hours to an request. This does not apply to weekends or legal holidays. Assignments will typically be graded within 1 week unless otherwise noted. More rigorous and sophisticated assignments may require more than a 1 week turn around. X. Course Policies Students are responsible for complying with the College of Health Care Sciences Student Handbook policies on Attendance, Dress Code and Conduct, Academic Honor, and Academic Affairs. Students are expected to prepare reading assignments ahead of each session and to actively participate in the online and on campus class sessions, as applicable. The following policies will apply to this class: Course Remediation: If a student fails a core sonography course, a cumulative remediation of written Generated: 9/13/2018 Page 5 of 6

6 and/or practical examinations will be administered. Grades on the transcripts will be qualified to indicate a repeated course or a remediation examination. A final course grade of less than C in the Ultrasound Physics II will constitute a course failure (this includes a grade achieved through a remediation examination). The grade from a remediation examination can be no higher that a C. Students who fail the Ultrasound Physics course and the remediation examination will be sent to the Committee of Student Progress and may be dismissed. While matriculating through the medical sonography program, each student is permitted to remediate a total of two core courses. A student will be allowed to sif for only one remediation examination per course. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT Netiquette: In a traditional classroom, students are reminded that behavior that disrupts the class or interferes with other students and their ability to learn is unacceptable. Any person engaged in disruptive behavior receives a written warning from the instructor. Students who continue to engage in disruptive behavior after this warning may be administratively withdrawn from the course. Similarly, in an online course, any electronic postings, s, or electronic messages that disrupt the class or interfere with learning goals and objectives are unacceptable. Electronic communication the backbone of online courses must be civil, respectful, and cordial at all times. Any posting that disrupts or interferes with learning will be removed, and the author of the posting will receive a written warning. A second disruptive posting will cause the author to be administratively withdrawn from the course. Dress: Students are expected to abide by the student dress code. Students must attend class dressed in appropriate attire or they will be sent home to change clothing. In such cases, students will be considered late or absent. For online live and/or collaborate courses, students must be in proper dress code. Failure to do so may result in referral to the Committee on Student Progress for disciplinary action. Cell phones/tape recorders/laptops etc.: Electronic devices will not be allowed during lectures, quizzes, exams, or group presentations; unless otherwise indicated by the professor of the course. Absences/Tardiness: Attendance at all scheduled instructional activities are mandatory. Failure to consider any additional requirement is noted in the evaluation of a student's academic performance and professional attitude and may result in a failing grade for the course. Students shall report to the faculty of the course or the Program Administrator in writing the reason for all absences within 24 hours of each occurrence. Students whose reasons are unacceptable will be subject to disciplinary action. In the event of an emergency absence, request for an excused absence must be made to the Program Administrator Deidra Love at or dloveross@nova.edu. All students are instructed to consult their specific program handbook with regard to additional or supplemental attendance policies.
