ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17
WELCOME Bobath Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to helping all those living with cerebral palsy throughout their lives. It remains our vision to ensure people with cerebral palsy in Scotland have access to specialist help and support throughout life so that all are able to achieve their individual potential. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN This annual report marks a year since I took over the reins as Chairman of Bobath Scotland from James Campbell. It would be remiss not to mark at this point his tremendous role in ensuring that Bobath Scotland had the vision and confidence to change and develop. We were delighted that his contribution was recognised nationally at the 2017 Scottish Charity Awards where he was awarded the richly deserved title of Terrific Trustee. I would also like to thank Seamus McInnes who stepped down from the Board having served with great flair for 9 years. Our strategy continues to seek out opportunities to enable a wider audience to access Bobath services. During the year we have taken a number of steps to review our governance, policies and procedures. In October 2016 we officially converted to a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) which gave us the opportunity to update our constitution so that it remains fit for purpose. With a team of committed trustees and such dedicated staff, I am confident that as an organisation we are fit to tackle the challenges ahead but we cannot be successful without the continued support of the families that come to Bobath, our funders and volunteers. Thank you for your support. Ian Johnstone
THE NEED WHERE BOBATH CAN HELP Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture. It is the most common physical disability in childhood. Around 1 in 500 births will result in a diagnosis of CP and in Scotland around 150 children are diagnosed each year. It is an umbrella term that means the impact CP will have on a person s life depends of the type of CP they have, the area of the body affected and the severity of the condition. They may also have a range of associated physical and cognitive impairments: 1 in 3 is unable to walk 1 in 4 is unable to talk 3 in 4 experience pain 1 in 4 has epilepsy 1 in 2 has a cognitive impairment 1 in 4 has bladder control problems 1 in 5 has sleep disorder 1 in 5 has saliva control problems People with CP can lead long and fulfilling lives and achieve so much if they have access to the right help and support. From early years to independent adulthood, Bobath Scotland has experience of the challenges faced by people with CP throughout life. We aim to give people strategies to overcome obstacles and to make the most of their abilities each day. We provide specialist therapy for children and adults with cerebral palsy, in our centre in Glasgow and through outreach projects across Scotland. Information and support is provided to the wider community, enabling connections to be made between people with CP, their families, carers, professionals and other services. WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN WE MAKE FOR PEOPLE? I had not had therapy for years. Moving and transfers were becoming difficult. Now I can put on my socks and shoes. It is a huge help in keeping my independence. Adult service user. I feel Bobath interventions have been so empowering for my clients. West Dunbartonshire Social Worker. These sessions were a real eye opener for us staff, showing what can be done. We never realised the pupil had the potential. Western Isles Education Staff. If we didn t have Bobath, he would be so far behind. Glasgow parent. I feel more positive about the future. Western Isles parent.
THE YEAR IN NUMBERS We have worked with; During the year 2016/17 we have worked with: adults at home and children and their families in the centre 46 people came for first assessments 18 children and young people took part in group activity weeks 63 community health and social care professionals and students worked and trained with us 200 people and 30 organisations attended the 3rd annual World Cerebral Palsy Day Scottish Conference
BOBATH BABIES THERAPY FOR CHILDREN With help from the People s Postcode Trust, Bobath Scotland has been able to launch a group for parents and children aged 0 3 years. Consultation with parents took place in February We asked parents with older children to find out What I wished I d known then and talked with parents of infants to find out what they most needed help with. Their views, together with therapists specialist input, have shaped the programme and structure. Bobath Babies is free for families to attend and welcomes parents and carers of babies and toddlers aged 0-3 who are concerned about their child s motor development, or have been given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. New families are welcome. Bobath Babies gives us the opportunity to offer something to parents at the time when they most need help. The group helps answer questions and gives a gentle introduction to our services. A child s movement and development can be influenced at a crucial early stage for maximum impact, and provide a network of supportive peers for the carers who attend. Claire McMillan, Speech & Language Therapist If you d like to find out more joining the group or if you know a family who might benefit, please call Katie on or register here During 2016/17 we re delighted that the number of children offered therapy by Bobath Scotland has risen from 88 in the previous year to 102 this year. From babies to young adults, there are projects that offer extra help at key stages but the heart of Bobath s work remains the children s therapy service. The children s service ensures that families have access to the help they need, when they need it. A child with CP will normally visit for a block of sessions over 6 weeks. This ensures they can take the time that s needed to practice at home in between sessions, build skill upon skill and give the whole family breathing space to adjust to new ways of doing things. For children who live further afield, shorter, more intensive blocks are offered to help minimise the impact of travel. The more skilled I can become, the more we might be able to keep Benjamin at home and the less time he might have to spend in hospital. Every new skill we can learn could make Benjamin s life more comfortable. I can t thank the team at Bobath Scotland enough for treating Benjamin with respect and for believing in his potential. Alex, Benjamin s mum. With help from the Scottish Government s Children & Young People Early Intervention Fund, children s therapy is available for children when they need it most regardless of funding.
CEREBRALPALSYSCOTLAND.ORG.UK On World CP day 2016, this new website was officially launched. With interviews with families, input from therapists and allied health professionals, cerebalpalsyscotland.org.uk is designed to be a place for all things CP in Scotland. People tell us that diagnosis and the earlier years can be the most frightening time for parents. The website is designed to give information and advice, written in plain English. It has a directory of services so that people across Scotland can find out what s available in their area. Please share the website far and wide. Currently the website provides information about key stages of childhood and advice from parents. There is only a limited section for adults with CP. This will be developed over the coming year. If you d like to contribute an article or story please let us know. You could help other parents or people with CP learn from your experiences. To submit an idea or question, please contact jill.clark@bobath.scot
A LIFELONG JOURNEY Bobath Scotland s purpose is to make the lives of those living with cerebral palsy better. BABIES & TODDLERS CHILDREN AGED 7-13 YEARS AGING WELL, WALKING, WORKING, FURTHER EDUCATION AND LIVING INDEPENDENTLY ADULT SERVICES DEVELOPING A SERVICE FOR ADULTS Cerebral palsy is a lifelong neurological condition. However, people with cerebral palsy struggle to access help once they have transitioned into adult services. With the integration of health and social care in Scotland and with pilot funding from the Scottish Government, Bobath Scotland and West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership worked together to explore how to deliver services for adults with CP. Based on previous work, our joint approach was to embrace the opportunity of integration and achieve lasting and sustainable change by: Raising awareness amongst professionals of the additional challenges that adults with cerebral palsy face as they age. STEPPING INTO EDUCATION RIGHT START 2-6 YEARS TRANSITION TO ADULT LIFE TEEN ACADEMY & YOUNG PEOPLE YEARS Raising awareness amongst service users regarding what options they have to take control of managing their own condition This work has demonstrated that services need to be person-centred and developed from a user-led perspective. The majority of the individuals seen had little idea of where or when to seek help before problems became acute. Adults with CP were open to ideas and keen to follow up suggestions made. Health and social care staff were also open to guidance and training and exploring different options available to them through continued case discussions. We are committed to continue joint working so that we can find a sustainable model of care for people with CP in West Dunbartonshire and across Scotland.
FUNDRAISING It is without reservation that we must say thank you. Thank you to all of you who have supported us during this last year. With your help, we have been able to increase the number of people we have seen by 28%. Around 80% of Bobath Scotland s income must come from fundraising. Over the last year people have run marathons, organised tea parties, stood in the cold with buckets, and persuaded customers and colleagues to raise funds amongst many other things. A special thank you goes to our friends at Sainsbury s Bank. Sainsbury s bank colleagues have actually walked through fire to raise almost 30,000 for Bobath Scotland. They have also provided opportunities for us to speak with colleagues across the business about the impact of cerebral palsy and living with a disability. The charity committee have worked very hard to ensure a regular programme of events offered a chance for everyone to get involved. They have been great advocates and active supporters. FINANCIAL REPORT Bobath continues to try to match funding to need. We are always striving to open up access for as many as possible, especially where funding is a barrier. During the year ending March 2017, gross income rose to 754,654 resulting in net surplus of 33,338. This can largely be explained by fact that we had budgeted to recruit a Head of Therapy but did not recruit during the year. Instead we have chosen to build and support the breadth and expertise of our specialist therapy team from within. The income of the charity from all sources was 754,654 (2016: 685,831). Charitable trusts and foundations continue to be the most important source of income but we continue to work on raising funds from a range of donors to remain financially resilient Full details can be found in the annual accounts.
