Management and Rehab of Concussion in Young Athletes Instructor: Kevin Walter, MD, FAAP and Michael Collins, PT, DPT Competency Level: All Levels There are an estimated 3.8 million sport-related concussions annually in the US with approximately 20% of that number demonstrating persistent symptoms lasting greater than 3 weeks. Patients who do not return to their pre-injury baseline after the expected timeframe are at risk for further co-morbidities including aerobic deconditioning, chronic pain, anxiety disorder, depression, as well as poor academic performance. With younger age being a risk factor for prolonged recovery, appropriate medical management becomes particularly important in the pediatric population. Through lecture, facility data sharing and case study discussion, this course will focus on the management and rehabilitation of athletes aged 8-18yo diagnosed with concussion from time of injury to recovery including attention to an evidence-based classification system that can aid in treatment direction. A review of the anatomy and physiology of mtbi will precede a discussion on management and rehabilitation with a focus on return to learning, treatment of vestibular/ocular motor dysfunction, graded physical exertion, management of co-morbidities and return to sport. Upon completion of the course attendees will be able to understand risk factors that predispose one to prolonged recovery and demonstrate an understanding of evidence based management, assessment and treatment of mtbi with the pediatric patient in mind. Kevin Walter, MD, FAAP, is a pediatric primary care sports medicine physician with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin (CHW/MCW). He is the program director of CHW Sports Medicine. He created and is the medical lead for the CHW Sports Concussion program. Dr. Walter is actively involved in concussion research and he has been published and presented numerous times on concussion & other sports medicine topics, most recently coauthoring the American Academy of Pediatrics position statement on Sports Concussion. He is currently the chair of the WIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and also served a term on the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. Dr. Walter served as an author for the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences report on Sports Concussion in Youth. Michael Collins, PT, DPT, is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy at Children s Hospital of Wisconsin specializing in pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine for young athletes aged 8-22yo. His role includes emphasis in rehabilitation for children with concussion-related symptoms and he acts as the lead therapist for CHW Mequon s PT department and PT lead for CHW s concussion program. Mick has presented at several continuing education seminars on topics related to pediatric concussion and sports rehabilitation including Medical College of Wisconsin s Concussion Symposium, CHW s Brain Injury seminar, and Concordia University s Health Professions conference and he guest lectures in Concordia and Marquette University s DPT programs.

3 Community-Based Exercise Programs for Balance and Falls Prevention 8 am - Noon Instructors: Kristi Hallisy, PT, DSc and Susan Frikken, PT, DPT 4 Contact Hours Prevention of falls among older adults is a pressing public health challenge in America. Every year, one in four older adults falls, and one in five falls leads to serious injury. Wisconsin currently ranks #1 in the nation in falls. The biopsychosocial and financial cost of falls is staggering. Now more than ever, health care providers like you are needed to screen and determine level of falls risk, remediate mobility impairments and utilize evidence-based community programs to reduce the falls rate in this country. Using the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) screening tools and American Geriatrics Society Guidelines, this workshop will arm physiotherapists with fun, innovative and evidence-based ways to assess and train balance, and reduce falls in older adults. Validated pre- and post- testing to measure balance, cognitive function and quality of life will be performed. Two community-based falls risk reduction programs will be offered. Ballroom Basics for Balance (BB4B) is a group balance class that uses basic dance moves to enhance balance and prevent falls. Tai chi Fundamentals is a mind-body martial art that fosters effective and efficient movement patterns addressing the strength, endurance, mobility and balance impairments frequently seen in the aging population. Kristi Hallisy, PT, DSc is an Assistant Professor at the UW-Madison DPT program. Her UW-Madison DPT teaching responsibilities include musculoskeletal coursework, prosthetics, health promotion and wellness and tai chi independent study. She is the Director of Mentoring for the UW-Health and Meriter Hospitals Orthopaedic Residency program. Dr. Hallisy uses a wide array of PT tools including her OCS, CMPT, CEEAA and Tai Chi Fundamentals certifications to help PTs and PTAs promote optimal aging and biopsychosocial-spiritual wellness in their patients/clients. Her current research revolves around community-based dissemination of tai chi to promote better balance in older adults. Susan Frikken, PT, DPT, is a private practice PT in Madison, WI with a DPT from UW-Madison where she has been a guest instructor and adjunct faculty, co-instructing "Health Promotion and Wellness". A massage therapist since 1993, areas of special interest include wellness, restoring optimal posture, conservative scoliosis management as a Schroth- Barcelona Institute (SBI) certified therapist, soft tissue therapy, and balance/falls prevention. Susan is a certified leader for Stepping On, an evidence-based falls reduction program, and co-created Ballroom Basics for Balance. She is a founding member of the Madison Area Wellness Collective, making health and wellness choices easier through connecting practitioners and community. High Intensity Locomotor Training Post-Stroke 2 5 pm Instructor: Ryan Gorecki, PT, DPT 3 Contact Hours One of the most commonly stated goals for patients post-stroke is to improve their walking. As reported in recent observational studies, stroke rehab consists of relatively little walking practice and is performed at low intensities. This practice conflicts with established motor learning and neuroplasticity research in the area of neurorehabilitation. The goal of this course is to examine traditional therapy for post-stroke gait, and challenge clinicians and students to reflect on how they can improve their practice. Clinically relevant motor learning and neuroplasticity principles will be reviewed, in addition to recent clinical trials of high intensity locomotor training for patients post-stroke. Recommended standardized outcome measures will be discussed to aid in capturing patient gains, setting goals, and justifying services to third party payers. Finally, case studies will be presented to demonstrate clinical application and allow for discussion.

4 Instructor Bio: Ryan Gorecki, PT, DPT, is a neurologic physical therapist at Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Institute in Milwaukee, WI, where he treats patients in the Outpatient Neuro and Brain Injury Day Treatment programs. Prior to joining Sacred Heart, he completed the Physical Therapy Residency in Neurology at the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ryan is a graduate of Marquette University s physical therapy program, where he is currently an adjunct faculty member for the lab portions of the Neurologic Rehab course.
