3 Course Descriptions Thursday, April 16 8 am 5 pm 7 Contact Hours Maximizing Functional Outcomes in the Evaluation and Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain and Knee Osteoarthritis In the current environment of health care reform, high co-pays, increased utilization review, and required outcome reporting, the busy clinician is required to create measureable functional change at each clinical visit. In order to be successful in this time of change, clinicians must provide cost-effective, efficient, patient-centered care. This course is designed for the busy outpatient orthopaedic clinician who wants to improve their ability to create measureable, patient-centered, functional change at each visit. Emphasis will be placed on translating research evidence into efficient clinical treatment of patients with chronic low back pain and patients with knee osteoarthritis. Participants will learn how to best develop a therapeutic alliance with their patients in order to maximize the non-specific effects of treatment. This course is unique in that it that focuses on both the clinician and patient perspective with a goal of immediately improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction). Competency Level: Multi-level J.W. Matheson PT, DPT, MS, SCS, OCS, CSCS is a 1996 graduate of the Mayo Clinic of Health Sciences. J.W. is a 2001 graduate of the first public APTA Credentialed Sports Physical Therapy residency at Gundersen-Lutheran Sports Medicine in Onalaska, WI. He is both a board certified specialist in sports physical therapy and a board certified specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy. J.W. completed his transitional DPT degree from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in Dr. Matheson is a respected author and clinical researcher. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed research articles on specific exercises for the knee and shoulder and has recently published several manuscripts on the topic of rehabilitation outcomes. J.W. integrates clinical outcomes and functional measurements into his daily clinical practice and is currently working with several payers on different models of reimbursement based on rehabilitation outcomes. He has presented nationally at conferences on the integration of patient reported and functional outcomes into clinical practice. Dr. Matheson is President and Clinic Director of Catalyst Sports Medicine. This is a private outpatient physical therapy practice and sports performance center located in Hudson, Wisconsin. J.W. is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and serves on several legislative and research committees locally and nationally. 8 am 5 pm 7 Contact Hours Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Therapeutic Neuroscience Education: Know Pain Know Gain Complex Regional Pain - Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a very challenging and poorly understood condition physical therapists face. CRPS is associated with significant changes in the CNS as well as the homeostatic system and this 4-hour session aims to update physical therapists on CRPS, including the latest research into the development of CRPS, contributing factors of CRPS, diagnostic criteria for CRPS, clinical presentation of CRPS and the pathobiology of the development of CRPS. This educational session will also update the attendees on the current best-evidence approaches for managing patients with CRPS, including graded motor imagery techniques such as laterality and mirror therapy in combination with neuroscience education. Competency Level: Intermediate and Advanced Therapeutic Neuroscience of Pain - Pain is complex and new paradigms of pain, i.e., neuromatrix, nerve sensitivity, endocrine and immune responses to pain and neuroplasticity has pushed physical therapy to the foreground in the treatment of pain. Physical therapy is uniquely positioned to treat pain, exhibiting various important skill sets such as knowledge of movement, biology, exercise and psychology, let alone the important clinical aspects of time with patients, hands-on treatment, cost-effectiveness and a large workforce. This lecture aims to show physical therapists, via a modern understanding of pain, how physical therapy can help patients afflicted with various seemingly disabling pain states. Various common pathologies such as low back pain, whiplash associated disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, complex regional pain, knee arthroscopy and more will be discussed from a pain perspective to illustrate the vast number of strategies physical therapists have to treat patients affected by pain. Competency Level: Intermediate and Advanced Adriaan Louw PT, PhD, CSMT, co-founder and CEO of ISPI, earned both an undergraduate as well as a master s degree in research and spinal surgery rehabilitation from the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a guest lecturer/adjunct faculty at St. Ambrose University in Davenport Iowa and the University of Las Vegas Nevada. In addition, he maintains a clinical practice and is co-owner of The Ortho Spine and Pain Clinic in Story City, Iowa. Adriaan has been teaching postgraduate, spinal manual therapy and pain science classes throughout the US and internationally for 15 years. He is a Certified Spinal Manual Therapist through ISPI. In addition, Adriaan has presented at numerous national and international manual therapy, pain science and medical conferences and has authored and co-authored numerous articles, books and book chapters related to spinal disorders and pain science. Recently, Adriaan completed his Ph.D. which centers on therapeutic neuroscience education and spinal disorders. 8 am 5 pm 7 Contact Hours Documentation and Payment Update for Rehab It is often said, If it is not documented, it was not done. This cliché rings true for many therapists who struggle through documentation, medical reviews, and the appeals process. Poor documentation has many costs: lost time, lost money and an increased misperception of the value rehabilitation provides. Therapy services in every setting continue to be highly scrutinized by Medicare, Recovery Auditors and even private payers. The regulations and guidelines for therapy services are complex and difficult to interpret. Moreover the interpretations of how to apply the regulations vary. This course will assist the participant in navigating and applying the rules and regulations. The key components of documentation will be presented along with examples of how to incorporate them into daily documentation. The participant will also learn about recent changes affecting therapists in all setting: functional reporting, maintenance therapy, payment differentials, and medical reviews. The course will also inform participants of proposed models for payment of therapy services in the future. Competency Level: Beginner and Intermediate

4 Course Descriptions Friday, April 17 Ellen R. Strunk, PT, MS, GCS, CEEAA received her master s degree in physical therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and earned her APTA Board Certification in Geriatric Physical Therapy in Since that time, she has worked in various roles and settings as both clinician and manager/director: hospital; transitional care; Director of rehab for a hospital home health agency; Clinical Consultant, Director of a HH staffing division, and Director of Governmental Affairs for a company providing rehab services in long term care, home health and outpatient settings. Presently, Ellen is owner of Rehab Resources and Consulting, Inc., a company providing continuing education and consulting services for post acute care settings. She specializes in helping customers understand the CMS prospective payment systems in skilled nursing facilities and home health settings, and especially how to deliver medically necessary therapy services in these settings. Her experience includes utilizing medical record reviews and data systems to help both inpatient and outpatient therapy providers meet regulatory guidelines. She lectures nationally on the topics of pharmacology for rehabilitation professionals, exercise and wellness for older adults, and coding/billing/documentation for therapy. 8 am - Noon 4 Contact Hours Measuring the Value of Rehab: Why You Should Care This session will examine the current state of rehabilitation outcomes measurement in a variety of rehabilitation settings: outpatient services, inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facility, long term acute care and home health care. Patients cared for in these settings often transition between multiple sites of care when their health and functional status changes, and therefore are particularly vulnerable and costly to the health care system. Currently performance measurement across rehabilitation settings is fragmented due to the heterogeneity of patient populations, as well as the various reporting mechanisms across settings. This session will provide attendees with a context for understanding the complex issues that contribute to the questions raised by external agencies and policymakers who seek to understand the value of rehabilitation in post acute care. Methods of choosing key areas to measure as well as how to use outcome metrics will be explored. The seminar will also describe the efforts currently underway to gather more information and develop meaningful outcome measures to support the value of rehabilitation services in disease management as well as future models of payment. Ellen R. Strunk, PT, MS, GCS, CEEAA bio listed under Documentation and Payment Update for Rehab. 8 am - Noon 4 Contact Hours Treatment Programming for the Cognitively Compromised Client Changes caused by acute illness, medications, as well as the cumulative effects of dementia can present special challenges to providing rehabilitation that is evidence based and functionally effective as well as engaging to the client. Speakers will share specific strategies and treatment ideas to elicit best ability to function from clients in a wide variety of settings. Course is intended to specifically address the day to day challenges experienced by therapists with clients who have limited ability and perceived motivation to learn new techniques or to work through new physical deficits.
