Ways to keep your athlete on the field all season long. OrthoTexas welcomes Christopher Flowers, M.D. P. 2 P. 4 P. 5
2 Page 2 W W W. O R T H O T E X A S. C O M WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TEAM PHYSICIAN SARANG DESAI, D.O. ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON FOOT & ANKLE WHAT TEAMS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WITH? Currently, I am the official team physician for the Dallas Sidekicks professional indoor soccer team and have been for the past four consecutive seasons. I look forward to returning to the Sidekicks sideline after their break this season. I also serve as the foot and ankle consultant for the Texas Legends NBA D-League team and the Allen Americans professional hockey team. Beyond that, I also treat many athletes from all over North Texas; from kids to professionals. WHAT DOES BEING A TEAM PHYSICIAN ENTAIL? Most people think a team physician s job is done at the end of each game, but in reality they play a much bigger role beyond the game. All team physicians are required to provide ongoing medical care to the athletes before and after the game; and even during the off season. Team physicians also provide additional care by providing education on injury prevention to the athletes, coaches and administrators in order to maintain the overall health of the team and individual athlete. WHAT TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP DO YOU HAVE WITH THE PLAYERS? A good team physician has to be close to the team and its players in order to establish a trusting relationship to treat injuries. As the team physician, it is very gratifying to see players that I have treated heal and get back to the game. When one of my players is injured, I feel their disappointment just as I feel their happiness when they heal and return to the game. WHAT IS GAME DAY LIKE? I typically get to the venue well ahead of the game so that I can touch base with the team s athletic trainers. We will discuss any players with existing injuries and make sure they are healing well so they can get back on the field. During the game, I am responsible for taking care of any injured athletes including the visitor s team. As the team physician, I have to watch the game through a different lens, unlike a regular spectator. I am constantly keeping a close eye on players in case an injury occurs. It is important for me to identify how the injury happened because this tells me a lot about potential structures that could be injured and other factors regarding the injury itself. During the game, I am also keeping a close eye on how previously injured athletes are performing. Once the game is done, I will perform post-game evaluations on the players and meet with the team s athletic trainer to make sure we have a plan until the next game. WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A GREAT TEAM PHYSICIAN? Being available and flexible for the players and the team is a big part of the job. Sometimes that means adjusting your clinic or surgery schedule to work an injured player in. When and where injuries will occur is unpredictable by nature, and being available and flexible is important when you are the team physician. It is my job to be there for the players, when they need me, so they can get back into the game. Most importantly, being the team physician means that I must stay up to date and educated on the current procedures and technologies in orthopedics in order to provide the athletes with the best care available.

4 Page 4 Injury Prevention in Young Athletes As youth participation in sports continues to increase, so has the number of sports-related injuries. The obligation of injury prevention is the responsibility of the parents and the coaches. If the proper caution is taken, a significant number of injuries can be prevented each season. However, if injuries do occur, it is important to seek medical attention from a physician that specializes in sports medicine and never allow a young athlete to work through the pain. If left untreated, injuries can cause permanent damage and may interfere with proper physical growth. Young athletes should have a physical exam prior to joining a new sport to ensure readiness to play. Following the physical, the next step to preventing injuries is to purchase any necessary and required protective gear. Care should be taken to make certain that it fits the athlete properly. Starting practices and games with a proper warm-up is necessary and must become a part of their routine throughout their athletic career. Once the muscles are warm, stretching can commence. If not performed correctly, stretches can cause injury. Care should be taken to avoid bouncing during a stretch, hyper-extending joints, straining the neck and back, and deep knee bends. All stretches should be done slowly and carefully with the body relaxed. To be effective, each stretch should be held for seconds. Additionally, it s important that the athlete has a proper nights sleep, is sufficiently hydrated and is not overworked or fatigued. Also remember to always have adult supervision at all practices and games. That adult should be qualified, trained, and educated in the sport. These are some of the many ways to keep your young athlete on the field and free from injury. Remember, keep the best interest of your young athlete in mind, and play safe! 5 Page 5 Practice Overview Denton AGES TREATED: 13+ INJURIES/ CONDITIONS YOU TREAT: All orthopedic injuries. INJURIES/ CONDITONS YOU DO NOT TREAT: I do not perform pelvic or neck/back surgery, but I can treat the patients that are non-surgical and refer when necessary. APPOINTMENT AVAILABILITY: Accepting new patients, same day or next day availibilty. Christopher Flowers, M.D. : Sports Medicine ABOUT DR. FLOWERS: I was born in Dallas and raised in Plano, Texas. I went to Morehouse College in Atlanta. I came back to Texas to attend UTMB in Galveston for medical school and subsequently matched into my #1 choice for orthopedic surgery residency at Ochnser Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. I then completed my fellowship in Sports Medicine at UT-Houston/Baylor College of Medicine where part of my job was assistant team doctor for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamo and UH athletics. As for me personally, I am a sports enthusiast. I love sports because it brings people together to achieve a common goal. My favorite saying is teamwork makes the dreamwork!. In addition, I have always been involved in several extra curricular activities from sports, music, theatre, various leadership and community service organizations. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON? Coming from a family full of physicians and educators, I have always felt the calling to become a doctor. I knew in high school that I wanted to do sports medicine because I could combine my love of sports and the way it brings out the best in people, with my passion for helping others in need. My dream was to be a local Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon who would serve the community by volunteering to be the team physician for the local high schools. This would allow me to do what I love while helping the community. I can proudly say that I am living my dream! WHAT KIND OF CONDITONS DO YOU TREAT? I treat injuries to the body s joints, muscles and bones. A common misconception is a sports medicine doctor only treats athletes. While we do treat athletes; the majority of our patients are usually active adults who have suffered an injury or have nagging chronic problems. Although I am an orthopaedic surgeon, not every patient requires surgery. We have several options outside of surgery that we can implement or facilitate to treat patients as well. Completing a fellowship in Sports Medicine gives me the advantage of knowing cutting edge techniques to treat patients better. I can recommend interventions based on how we treated professional athletes during my fellowship, which may allow patients to heal better, faster, or give patients options that were not available before. WHAT WAS YOUR SPORTS FELLOWSHIP TRAINING LIKE? In fellowship, I worked with and learned from the orthopaedic giants of the world. I worked with world renown surgeons Dr. Christopher Harner and Dr. Walter Lowe and their incredibly talented partners. We worked on implementing and developing cutting edge technologies to treat elite athletes as well as the everyday patient. My fellowship was unique; it allowed me to learn from the experts how to treat shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, hand and wrist. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR FUTURE PATIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am very approachable which puts patients at ease so that they are comfortable talking with me. One of my closest mentors told me the best way to excel in treating patients is to master communication. I firmly believe this and make it a point to ensure that my patients are heard and are clear on the plan going forward. THE BEST WAY TO EXCEL IN TREATING PATIENTS IS TO MASTER COMMUNICATION.
6 Page 6 Physicial Medicine & Rehabilition YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY OUR EXPERTS OF ORTHOTEXAS: Aine McKenzie M.D. Gregory Powell, M.D. What makes someone a good candidate to see a Physical Medicine & Rehabilition physician and when should they see an orthopedist? Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as physiatrists, treat a wide variety of disabling medical conditions nonsurgically. An orthopedist is a surgeon. If an individual has a condition requiring surgery, then they should consult with an orthopedist. -McKenzie One of the distinct advantages of practicing in a large group of orthopedic surgeons is the wide variety of subspecialists that we have. OrthoTexas has physicians who specialize in neck and spine, shoulder and elbow, hand and wrist, hip and knees, foot and ankle, and sports medicine. This allows patients to be seen for all conditions within the practice for an integrated care experience. -Powell What are the advantages in your practice of working with a large group of orthopedic surgeons? What are some signs or symptoms that would make a patient a good candidate for an EMG? Electrodiagnostic testing, also known as EMG, is a test performed by a PM&R physician in the office. This test is usually ordered when someone is showing signs or symptoms of a muscle or nerve disorder. These signs or symptoms may include pain, tingling, numbness or weakness of the extremities. An EMG can help diagnose muscle disorders, nerve disorders and disorders affecting the connection between nerves and muscles. -McKenzie A rhizotomy, also known as a radio frequency ablation, is often performed in the spine for treatment of chronic pain from osteoarthritis or trauma. This is a non-operative technique that involves the use of no medications and can provide signifcant pain relief for certain conditions. This technique is also being used for treatment of chronic knee pain in patients who have failed to respond to surgery. -Powell What is a rhizotomy? What ages do you treat and what is your goal when treating patients? Physiatrists treat a diverse age range including children, adolescents and adults. Our goal when treating patients is to provide a high-quailty non-operative diagnosis and treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions of the extremitites or spine. We want to see our patients restore function and maintain a good quality of life. -McKenzie & Powell An epidural steroid injection, or ESI, is commonly performed in the neck or low back for treatment of pain from a herniated disc or pinched nerve. This treatment can provide significant pain relief to allow a patient to avoid surgery and get back to activity. Recent research suggests that 80% of patients can demonstrate significant improvment in their pain through this technique. -Powell What is an ESI?
