1 Return to Center: Natural Remedies for Emotional Balance With Steven Horne Listen to Your Body Talk The body communicates its needs through feelings (bodily sensations) like: Hunger Thirst Fatigue Pain or discomfort Restlessness Pleasure Tension Relaxation In order to meet the body s needs we have to learn how to properly heed and understand these signals Blocking the Message We can do things to interfere with the message, but this does not satisfy the need The body s need remains unsatisfied, so the feeling will resurface later with more intensity Examples: Pain Killers Stimulants Appetite Suppressants 1
2 Emotions are Our Heart Talking Emotions are also feelings, but they arise from the needs of our non-physical heart Our heart informs us about our social and spiritual needs It tells us how we are relating to life, to ourselves and to others Emotions Don t Lie Contrary to popular belief emotions don t lie Emotions are accurately communicating what our needs are Our thoughts about those emotions can lie because they can misinterpret the message the emotion is trying to convey Again, the emotions are real it is the thoughts we have about them that deceive us Two Dysfunctional Approaches Denial and Suppression Denying an emotion is not wanting to feel it I shouldn t feel that way Denial doesn t make an emotion go away, it just puts it out of conscious awareness It denies the need behind the emotion It causes us to try to suppress the expression of that emotion which causes muscle tension and shallow breathing Blaming and Venting Acknowledging the emotion but not wanting to feel it Blaming its existence on others You made me feel this way! Places the responsibility for the emotion outside of ourselves Causes us to use emotions as a weapon to try to intimidate or manipulate others into doing what we want them to do 2
3 Emotional Balance To achieve emotional balance we must learn to listen to the messages our emotions are telling us about US We must identify the actual need behind our emotion We must take responsibility for finding ways to get those needs met, not place that responsibility on others This leads to self-actualization and empowerment Finding Emotional Balance What is the Message of Anger? 3
4 Anger Clip Here The Message of Anger is About Boundaries and Self-Control Denying-Suppressing Allows others to control our life for their benefit Causes us to become enablers, people pleasers and doormats Prevents us from doing things that create a happy and successful life for ourselves Blaming-Venting Attempts to control others for our benefit Causes us to become aggressive, controlling and abusive Destroys relationships, prevents us from having mutually-beneficial and loving relationships The Balance of Anger Approaching relationships from a place of mutual respect I m in control of my life and you are in control of yours I won t try to make you lose so I can win I also won t let you make me lose so you can win We will negotiate for a win/win or no deal 4
