4 1000 participants in 4 French cities used a Fitbit Zip Tracker for up to 1 year and filled out 3 questionnaires Ad Q1 Q2 Q3 End Start n=711
5 Our questions in this exploratory research: how long do people use an activity tracker? why do they quit? what predicts sustained use? Demographical and socio-economic factors: age, gender, place of residence, household size and household composition, profession, and education, time of residence in current house, commute time, commute transport mode (car, public transport, etcetera), reasons for commute transport mode. Psychological factors: general mood, specific scores on affective situation (sadness, gaiety), stress (calmness, stressfulness), energy (energy level, tiredness), as well as the big five personality traits (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism; measured using the French translation of the TIPI questionnaire [46], rebelliousness, health-mindedness, and independence. Technological factors: synching platform type (smartphone, tablet, computer), operating system - ios or Android, experience with technology, use of other health applications User experience: perceived utility, agreeableness, intrusiveness, modernity, perceived amusement, preciseness, simplicity, perceived embarrassment, correspondence to needs, design, solidity, and cumbersomeness of the activity tracker Health-related factors: BMI (all questionnaires), smoking, pregnancy, diet, medical treatment status, activity in sports, activity in social sports, general activity level, and sleep quality, physical activity at work. Pre-defined participant goals and perceived goal achievement: increasing activity, improving sleep, quitting smoking, diagnosing or improving diet, diagnosing behaviours, losing weight, and improving stamina (all in Q1); for each goal, the perceived achievement of the goal was measured. Social factors: whether participants talked about the tracker sharing use with family, friends, colleagues, teams and clubs; sharing data on the internet through social media, blogs, twitter, websites, forums, and mailing lists.
