1 This event aims to educate, entertain and enthuse your students, facilitating their understanding of science and increasing their motivation for psychology. There are three versions of this flyer 1. A flyer for you, with booking details (next page). 2. A flyer for students (page 3). 3. A flyer for SMT to convince them that you must come (page 4)! Thinking of making two days of it? details (page 5) of two-day trips with NST. Programme (Note that the programme for Edinburgh is different see page 6.) Dr Peter Lovatt is a principal lecturer and Reader in Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, where he runs the Dance Psychology Lab. Before embarking on an academic career Peter was a professional dancer. His research examines the relationship between dance and thinking, health, hormones and human perception. See Dance, Hormones and Thinking In this talk Peter will explain how movement influences the way in which people solve problems. Peter will also demonstrate how the way you move is influenced by your hormonal and genetic make up. Oliver Meechis a magician. He studied Psychology at Oxford University, Magic at The Magic Circle, and combines the two in critically-acclaimed shows, talks and books. Amazing Brains: The Psychology of Magic. The real secret to magic tricks is that they re not about fooling the eyes, but bamboozling the brain. Every trick is a real-world psychology experiment. Discover how magicians can offer eye-opening insights into the way we think and act. This conference is primarily an A level conference but suitable for younger students. Some comments from Year 9 students: The conference was very well organised and all the speakers did different things to get us involved (J.G. Year 9 Pupil) My favourite part was the dancing, the magic and the hypnosis. (D.Z. Year 9 Pupil) Although it was a long day, I learned a lot and it gave me a flavour of how Psychologists do research. I want to take it for A level. (M.A. Year 9 Pupil). Andrew Newton is an internationally renowned hypnotist who lectures and performs all over the world. He makes annual trips to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Norway where he talks to students and psychologists about the potential of hypnosis as therapy.. Andrew's lectures and demonstrations are always both fascinating and funny. A great end to a great day! Phil Banyard Reader in Psychology, Nottingham Trent University, former Chief Examiner OCR. Mike Cardwell Senior Lecturer at Bath Spa University, former Chief Examiner AQA A. Cara Flanagan Widely published author of A level Psychology books. During the course of the day the team will Explore the boundaries between science and pseudoscience. Look at examples of bad science (where science goes wrong). Consider how we collect empirical evidence including some LIVE experiments, activities and demonstrations!

3 We promise you Fun Entertainment Education Psychology and Science as you've never seen it before Live psychological research Talks on pseudoscience, science and BAD science. Dancing A psychologist does research on dancing! Peter Lovatt explains how your hormones and genes influence your dancing. Magic It s all about psychology. Oliver Meech does some tricks and shows you the science. Hypnosis You simply won t believe what you see. Andrew Newton is a hypnotist of international renown. Lectures challenged students to think about the criteria for scientific knowledge. Dr Dance had everyone up on their feet, practising the moves which have been researched in laboratory and night club conditions. The day culminated in a dramatic, humorous and entertaining demonstration of hypnosis, prompting student questions about the nature of the hypnotic state and how it can be investigated.
4 This event aims to educate, entertain and enthuse your students, facilitating their understanding of science and increasing their motivation for psychology. This is a unique opportunity for Psychology students to learn about psychology and science. It may not appear to be directly related to boosting exam performance but it is. The day is about science " &'()! % % The day is about psychology " " "! $ "$ " "% The day is about improving exam performance "! % " $ " " " ## % Feedback from teachers I cannot recommend this trip enough! Brilliant balance of education and entertainment - a great way of introducing students to elements of psychology they won't find in the textbooks. Mrs Sparrow, Sheldon School This day is usually the turning point for my students. This is the moment when their minds are fully engaged with the scientific nature of the discipline and I genuinely feel that their interactions with me change. All in all, the conference is a high impact, extremely educational event but also huge fun. I couldn t stop smiling and my students are still talking about it. Sophie Afsar, Berkhampstead School I think the day really inspires them to think beyond their course and textbooks and understand how broad Psychology is and how it can be applied. Research methods is often challenging for students and this day helps them understand the point behind the scientific method. Leigh Rust-Ashford, Torbay School The day is about enthusing students % " % " % " ## % This event really helps to set the scene for budding young psychologists and helps them open their minds to the possibility that what are often presented as facts should always to be challenged. Claire Barker, Queens College The day culminated in a dramatic, humorous and entertaining demonstration of hypnosis, prompting student questions about the nature of the hypnotic state and how it can be investigated. David Howes, Hills Road The Science and Pseudoscience conference is a fantastic and informative day trip. My students did not stop talking about it the whole train journey home. They were buzzing. Lizzie Elwell, Rosebery School
5 What people say: I d use them again it was well organised and having the coach for pick up and drop offs makes it so much easier than using the tube when you have a large group of students! We organised our trip through NST. We went to the Freud Museum, spent some time shopping and then went on a Jack the Ripper walking tour in the evening. We stayed at the Meininger Hotel which is a great location. We went to a talk of phobias with a focus on characteristics, common phobias and hypnosis (they had a group hypnosis session). We went for dinner and then to the Jack the Ripper tour (I use this as I have a David Canter documentary applying investigative and geographical profiling to the case). On the second day we went to the Jewish museum and had a talk on faith, belief and prejudice and then had some free time in Covent gardens and seeing the sights. All food, accommodation and travel was included in the price. They offer so many options of activities though. Previously I went to the Freud museum with students and then to an Autism specialist centre. We paid 155 and stayed at YHA Tameside central London. The hostel was really good actually and even came with full breakfast (bonus). 6 y g o l o h c y s P d n a e c n e i c S Edinburgh Programme Wednesday 6 December 2017 Professor Richard Wiseman started his working life as a professional magician. He is currently Professor in the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire. He frequently appears on the media, and has written over 60 academic articles and several books, including The Luck Factor and 59 seconds. The Psychology of Magic and Illusion Magicians appear to make solid objects vanish into thin air, defy the laws of gravity and predict the future. Magician and psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman invites you to step backstage and discover the secret science of sorcery. Learn the hitherto hidden psychology employed by some of the world s greatest illusionists, discover why the hand is rarely quicker than the eye. Sleep and dreamingprofessor Wiseman has recently published a book Night School: Wake up to the power of sleep. In his talk he will uncover the power of the sleeping mind, and reveal how to get the perfect night s sleep and decode your dreams. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the process of science, enabling students to improve exam performance on research methods questions and improve their general evaluations of research and the process of science. Andrew Newton is one of the most successful and experienced hypnotists in the world. He has over 5,500 public and television appearances under his belt and was the man who taught Paul McKenna. A demonstration of hypnosis Andrew's lectures and demonstrations are always both fascinating and funny. A great end to a great day!
