Remarks from President (1-5) AASP 2016 Capacity Building and Workshop in Indonesia (5-8) AASP 2016 Capacity- Building Workshops for Publishing in Social Psychology Journals (8-10) AASP 2017 International Conference in Auckland, New Zealand (10-11) AAICP 2017: International Conference in Makassar, Indonesia (12-14) Allan B. I. Bernardo (University of Macau, Macau SAR) Newsletter prepared by Hamdi Muluk (AASP Representative) Faculty of Psychology Universitas Indonesia As 2016 comes to a close, I would like to take time to report on some of the recent activities that the AASP had undertaken for its members and target communities of social psychology scholars in Asia. Many of the activities of the AASP implemented during the second half of 2016 arose from discussions during the AASP Annual General Meeting held in Nagoya, Japan last 31 July at the WINC Aichi Conference Center. During the last half of the year, the AASP has sponsored capacity building workshop for research in countries that are currently underrepresented in the social psychology literature. The aim of these workshops is to provide basic information and skills training related to research and publishing in social psychology. The hope is that these workshops would plant the seeds in target communities of social psychologists so that more social psychology research from these countries would be published in a few years time. This is a modest effort on the part of the AASP that would hopefully be sustained by local social psychologists in the next few years. We hope to see the outcomes in the coming years, perhaps with increased quality publications in the AASP s flagship journal, Asian Journal of Social Allan B. I. Bernardo (University of Macau, Macau SAR)

Psychology and its affiliate journal, Journal of Pacific-Rim Psychology. There are two other feature articles in this newsletter; the first reports on the research and publication workshops in Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia, and the second reports on publications workshops in Bangkok (Thailand), Manila (Philippines), and Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia). In the coming year, our plans for future capacity-building workshops will be helped by our new Chair of the Training and Education Committee, Prof Itesh Sachdev. Itesh Sachdev joins the Executive Committee late this year, and has already started planning and preparing for the 2017 AASP Winter School. Related to the Summer School, during the last half of 2016, there was much effort directed at preparing for the 2017 AASP Conference in Auckland, which includes preparations for the Winter School to be held prior to the conference and other new innovations in the conference program. I invite all members to read the update of Conference Chairperson James H. Liu in the current newsletter, especially the information related to the Call for Abstracts for oral presentations, posters, and symposiums. At the 2016 IACCP Conference in Nagoya, Japan, AASP 2015 Summer School Alumni Makiko Deguchi and Danielle Ochoa present their Summer School research project coauthored with Summer School alumnus Eric Manalastas and Summer School mentor Winnifred Louis. The group had an oral presentation and a poster presentation on two studies that comprise their summer school project

In support of the 2017 Conference, the AASP Executive Committee has been discussing ways to ensure wide access and participation in the conference, especially among social psychologists and students from economically developing countries. This support is in view of the success of capacity-building activities in the 2015 AASP Conference in Cebu. One of the 2015 Summer School groups supported by a K.S Yang Research Grant already presented their research outputs in the conference of the International Association of Cross- Cultural Psychology in Nagoya, Japan last August Some of the participants in the Research Collaboration meetings also presented in the same conference and have submitted manuscripts for publication based on research implemented as part of the research collaborations. The AASP Executive Committee has also been overseeing developments in its official publications. Susumu Yamaguchi, Editor of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology (AJSP), has developed his Editorial Statement for his tenure as editor, in consultation with the AASP Executives and Senior Advisers. One exciting innovation under the new editorship is the addition of a new section in the AJSP on planned replications. Interested authors should read the editorial statement and contact Prof Yamaguchi regarding this section. The AASP continues to publish a Special Thematic Issue in the Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology (JPRP) with James Liu and myself as co-editors. The special issue is published online this December 2016, and we invite AASP members to read the articles as well as our reflections on how to push forward in developing applied social psychology research in the Asian region. I would like to remind all AASP members that we all enjoy free online access to the JPRP through the link in the AASP website. AASP participated in Asia-Pacific Psychology Leaders Forum in Yokohama Japan, July 2016

Related to publications, the AASP Executive Committee has decided to discontinue the Series on Progress in Asian Social Psychology that features the biannual proceedings of selected papers from the AASP conferences. The proceedings from the 2015 Cebu Conference will be the last in the Series. However, the AASP Executive Committee is still studying alternative publication venues for presenters in the AASP conferences who wish to publish their research. I hope to have an update on this discussion in our next AASP Newsletter. In the previous newsletter, I mentioned to you that the AASP was invited to participate in the Asia-Pacific Psychology Leadership Forum to be held during the International Union of Psychological Sciences (IUPsyS) International Congress of Psychology in Yokohama, Japan, July 24-30, The AASP was one of two regional associations who participated in the meeting, the other participants being representatives of national psychology organizations from about 15 Asian and Pacific Countries. During the meeting it was resolved that an alliance of Asian psychology associations will be formed to work towards greater cooperation within the region to advance the goals of psychological science and practice. The resolution was signed during the Assembly of the IUPsyS, and although the AASP was not a signatory because the AASP is not an affiliate of the IUPsyS, the AASP will be part of the continuing discussions and work of this alliance. During the discussions, I shared AASP s experience in trying to strengthen scientific research and publication in social psychology, and the other members of the alliance seem eager to learn from AASP s work in the region related to this important thrust of the alliance. More importantly, I hope that AASP s participation in the alliance AASP participates in drafting of resolution to form the Asia-Pacific Psychology Alliance

would help AASP in building its membership across the region, and in doing so gain more support for its vision and mission for social psychology in Asia. I hope that the AASP members see and appreciate how the AASP has tried to engage its membership in a variety of programs and activities. But I also hope that the members will help the AASP leadership by suggesting other ways by which the AASP can be of further assistance and support to its members in the various parts of the region. Together, let us look forward to an even more successful year for AASP in The numbers of publications produced by Southeast Asian countries are falling behind other parts of Asia. In order to stimulate the publications from Southeast Asia especially in Social Psychology, AASP held the Capacity Building and Workshop in Indonesia, the largest archipelago in the region. It was held at September 22-24, 2016 and co-hosted by Ikatan Psikologi Sosial (Indonesian Association of Social Psychology), University of Indonesia, and Udayana University. The Capacity Building titled Asian Psychology: Epistemology, Teaching, and Action was held in Depok while the Workshop titled From Action to Publication: Writing Academic Paper for Publication Based on Community Project was held in Bali. Group photo of James H. Liu as Speaker and Participants, AASP 2016 Capacity Building and Workshop in Depok, Indonesia

The primary speaker for both events was James H. Liu from Massey University, New Zealand. As an Asian social psychologist focused on the issues of Asian Epistemology and Indigenous approach toward psychology, he was a suitable speaker to stimulate the fresh local social psychological perspectives. The targeted participants are social psychology teaching staffs from various universities in Indonesia so that the impact of this event will spread throughout the nation. The Capacity Building in University of Indonesia, West Java (September 22-23, 2016) This Capacity Building was attended by 26 delegations from 14 universities throughout Indonesia. One doctoral student participant from Massey University, New Zealand came to attend as well. In addition, University of Indonesia s students and staffs also participated on the public lecture held as an opening of the event. The whole program consisted of several activities. On the first day, public lecture was brought by James H. Liu to introduce the indigenous Asian approach in Social Psychology, to emphasize the importance of action research, and to give example from the already established Chinese epistemologies. It was ended with heated discussions about Indonesian epistemologies derived from local wisdom. The participants then mobilized into small class. There, Bagus Takwin from University of Indonesia talked about Indonesian philosophy and the opportunity for unique indigenous epistemologies in Indonesia. After, Liu divided the participants into several small groups to discuss Indonesian philosophies. Several interesting notions arise from this several small group discussions. On the next session, Liu encouraged all the groups to find unique local paradigm AASP Capacity Building and Workshop in Indonesia, discussion about Indonesian epistemology

that may serve as foundations to indigenous Indonesian Social Psychology. The final session consisted of discussion about how the foundations can be developed into social psychology course syllabus emphasizing on community service and action. On the second day, James H. Liu gave feedback for the first day followed by other small group discussions to develop outline for Asian social psychological course syllabus that incorporates the holism of Asian epistemologies and better prepares students to be useful to society after they complete their degrees. After all the groups presented their own opinions regarding the ideal syllabus, Liu gave each of them feedbacks and rooms for improvements. Finally, Indonesian social psychologist Hamdi Muluk from University of Indonesia gave the closing speech about indigenous psychology and the roots of Indonesian social psychology. Closing ceremony signaled the end for the Capacity Building with all participants brought the developed syllabus to their home universities. There are two important element produced here regarding to construction of indigenous Indonesian epistemologies. First, Indonesian epistemologies should focus on the communal relationship, much like many Asian philosophies. Second, spirituality element is of utmost importance for Indonesian people. These two elements should be considered when constructing novel Indonesian episte-mologies. The Workshop in Udayana University, Bali (September 24, 2016) While the Capacity Building focused on developing the local epistemologies, this event aimed at improving Indonesian authors writing skills. This event also prepared the authors so that they were ready to publish their articles in international journals. 13 university teaching staffs with social psychology as their specialization From Action to Publication, workshop manuscript publication in Bali

participated on this workshop. They brought their articles for evaluation by James H. Liu. Several members from Indonesian Association of Social Psychology can also be seen participating along with students and staffs from Udayana University, Bali. For the first session, Petar Milojev from Massey University, New Zealand presented his speech intended to prepare the manuscripts to be published. He gave practical step-by- step in writing the introductions, hypothesis buildings, methods and research designs, presenting the results, and finally discussing the findings. The second session was brought once again by James H. Liu. He gave speech about how to publish in international social psychology journals. Along with his speech, he also gave the list of journals and their specializations so that the participants can aim for the appropriate journals. For the final third session, every participants presented their research s abstracts. Milojev carefully evaluated all the respected abstracts then gave feedback for each of the participants. Liu continued the session as he evaluated the whole manuscripts from every participant. For all the manuscripts, he emphasized the feedback on theoretical novelty, research designs, and the first three paragraphs. Group photo of participants in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia AASP Publication Workshop There has been a remarkable growth in social psychology publications from Asian authors in the past two decades since the Asian Association of Social Psychology (AASP) was established. But the rate of growth has been varied across different

Asian countries. There is a quite noticeable gap in the publication productivity of different groups of Asian authors, and this gap is evident in how some countries are underrepresented in the AASP s flagship journal, Asian Journal of Social Psychology (AJSP) In an attempt to narrow the existing gaps in publications in refereed social psychology journals, the AASP leadership has initiated a series of capacitybuilding workshops specifically focused on providing novice researchers orientations and specific guidelines on how to publish in the AJSP and other refereed journals in social psychology and related areas. The first workshop was conducted in Bangkok, Thailand in cooperation with the Faculty of Psychology of Chulalangkorn University through the facilitation of AASP Representative-at- Large from Thailand, Watcharaporn Boonyasiriwat. The workshop was conducted last 17 September by AJSP Editor, Susumu Yamaguchi and most of the participants were graduate students in psychology. Aside from providing a general orientation on the publication guidelines and editorial policies of the AJSP, Prof. Yamaguchi also had individual consultations with authors who had draft manuscripts to provide them detailed comments on their works. The second and third workshops were conducted by AASP President Allan B. I. Bernardo in the Philippines and Malaysia. The capacity-building workshop in the Philippines was conducted with the Social Psychology Division of the Psychological Association of the Philippines guided by the AASP Representative-at-Large from the Philippines, Delia Belleza. There were 14 participants in the two-day workshop who all had full draft manuscripts prepared on a range of social psychology topics and who received intensive feedback on the manuscripts they have prepared. The workshop as conducted at the Department of Psychology at the University of the Philippines, Diliman on 3-4 October. Group photo of participants in Manila AASP Publications Workshop

The capacity-building in Malaysia was conducted with the University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia with the facilitation of Prof. Rosnah Ismail, who also organized an AASP Conference in Sabah in There were 30 participants in the twoday workshop conducted in November, at the Faculty of Psychology and Education in the UMS. Although not all the participants are trained in social psychology (most are junior faculty members and graduate students in different areas of specialization in psychology), 13 participants had full draft manuscript prepared and received intensive feedback on these manuscripts. All the participants attended the workshops for free with the costs of the workshops underwritten by the AASP. However, most of the participants generously donated to the Kwok Leung Memorial Fund. The Conference website is now live, and we are accepting proposals for papers, posters, and symposia (see The lineup of keynote speakers is set. We have a Summer School Principal (Professor Itesh Sachdev), and a Massey International Collaborations Forum ( prior to the main conference to allow delegates to spend some more quality time in New Zealand. The deadline for conference submissions is January 31, 2017, so start making your submissions now. We promise to respond promptly with decisions on acceptances in advance of the final deadline. Auckland, New Zealand

There will be three Editors-in-Chief of international journals present at the conference: Susumu Yamaguchi, Asian Journal of Social Psychology; Yingyi Hong, Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology, and Stuart Carr, International Perspective in Psychology: Research, Practice, and Consultation. We are planning a lively set of talks that enable conference attendees to make connections, and learn the craft of publication from these stellar editors. AASP 2017 Conference Call for Paper and Symposium Proposals: Now : Submissions open Starting Dec, 2016: Early Notification of Submission Acceptance. Januari, 31, 2017: Submissions Closing Date Researchers and scholars are invited to submit individual papers or symposium proposals for the 12th Biennial Conference of the Asian Association of Social Psychology to be held in Albany, Auckland, New Zealand August 26-28, Authors are requested to limit their involvement to no more than two presenting roles. This means (1) first authored Individual Paper Presentation or Poster. Additionally, they may take part as a first author of a paper in a Symposium (see below). The Conference Theme is Making a Difference with Social Science. We welcome paper and symposia submissions on any topic of relevance to Asian Social Psychology (e.g., from experimental to survey to theoretical research), but are especially interested in submissions with elements of teaching, research, and applied prac- tices (including self-cultivation) that are able to make contributions to the public good. Symposia Presentations (including invited symposia) A symposium is defined as a cohesive cluster of research presentations and theoretical perspectives.
