Aims: reading to check predictions completing a summary of a text saying figures making comparisons with as as talking about driving habits making spoken comparisons about people, things and facts. Timing: approximately 11/2 hours. Preparation: You may want to hide the title of the article until you reach task 2 to avoid revealing the answer to question 3 in task 1. Task 1 Speaking This prepares students for the topic they are going to read about and gives you the opportunity to see whether they need to work on comparison (see task 7). Question 3: Encourage students to make comparisons such as I think that b. is more dangerous than a. because wine is stronger than beer. There is an interactive version of this task Task 3 Saying figures The UK uses a strange mixture of imperial and metric measurements! Note that 70mph is approximately km/h. Task 4 Reading When they are driving at 70mph, drivers take 20% longer to react (6m longer to stop) if they are listening to sport on the radio. The maximum level of alcohol allowed is 80mg/100ml.
