19 Recidivism and Desistance Recidivism Desistance The tendency for a criminal to reoffend. The process where the person arrives at a permanent state of non offending. 19

20 Desistance Punishment must be applied properly to be effective. Punishment needs to be immediate, inescapable, and sufficiently unpleasant. Harsh forms of punishment do not significantly decrease recidivism rates psychological principles must be applied. 20
